Evolution of modern literature and film

The evolution of complex narratives, such as fictional books or films, is a fairly new area of cultural-evolutionary research. This chapter, first, discusses a theoretical question: in what sense do narratives evolve? Then, it proceeds to describing how content-based, or hedonic, selection influences the evolution of narrative forms – and briefly, the role of several other evolutionary mechanisms, such as drift and accumulation of innovations. The shortlist effect: nestedness contributions as a tool to explain cultural success

Detecting the forces behind the success or failure of cultural products, such as books or films, remains a challenge. Three such forces are drift, context-biased selection, and selection based on content—when things succeed because of their intrinsic appeal. We propose a tool to study content-biased selection in sets of cultural collections—e.g. libraries or movie collections — based on the “shortlist effect”: the fact that smaller collections are more selective, more likely to favour highly appealing items over others. We use a model to show that, when the shortlist effect is at work, content-biased cultural selection is associated with greater nestedness in sets of collections. Having established empirically the existence of the shortlist effect, and of content-biased selection, in 28 sets of movie collections, we show that nestedness contributions can be used to estimate to what extent specific movies owe their success to their intrinsic properties. Побудова асимптотики розв’язку для системи сингулярно збурених рівнянь методом істотно особливих функцій

Singularly perturbed problems with turning points arise as mathematical models for various physical phenomena. The internal turning point problem is a one-dimensional version of the steady-state convection-diffusion problem with a dominant convective term and a velocity field that changes sign in the reservoir. Boundary turning point problems, on the other hand, arise in geophysics and in the modeling of thermal boundary layers in laminar flow. The paper analyzes the results from the asymptotic analysis of singularly perturbed problems with turning points. For a homogeneous system of singularly perturbed differential equations with a small parameter at the highest derivative and a turning point, the conditions for constructing a uniform asymptotic solution are obtained. We consider the case when the spectrum of the limit operator contains multiple and identically zero elements. The asymptotics are constructed by the method of essentially singular functions, which allows using the Airy model operator in the vicinity of the turning point. The construction of asymptotic solutions contains arbitrary constants, which are determined uniquely during the solution of the iterative equations. At the same time, the conditions for the existence of a solution of a system of differentials with a small parameter for the highest derivative and for the presence of a turning point are obtained, provided that the turning point is located on the interval [0; l]. An example of constructing the asymptotic of a homogeneous system of differential equations is given. Задача з внутрішньою точкою звороту є одновимірною версією стаціонарної конвекційно-дифузійної задачі з домінуючим конвективним членом і полем швидкості, яке змінює свій знак у водозбірнику. Задачі з граничними точками звороту, з іншого боку, виникають у геофізиці та при моделюванні теплових прикордонних шарів у ламінарному потоці. У роботі проведено аналіз результатів з асимптотичного аналізу сингулярно збурених задач з точками звороту. Для однорідної системи сингулярно збурених диференціальних рівнянь з малим параметром при старшій похідній і точкою звороту, одержані умови для побудови рівномірної асимптотики розв’язку. Розглядається випадок, коли спектр граничного оператора містить кратні і тотожно рівні нулю елементи. Асимптотику побудовано методом істотно особливих функцій, який дозволяє в околі точки звороту використати модельний оператор Ейрі. Конструкція асимптотичних розв’язків містить довільні сталі, які визначаються однозначно під час розв’язання ітераційних рівнянь. Водночас отримано умови існування розв’язку системи диференціальних з малим параметром при старшій похідній та при наявності точки звороту, за умови, що точка звороту міститься на інтервалі [0; l]. Концепт «еквівалентності» у наративній організації новел О. Генрі та Аркадія Любченка

У статті розглядається тенденція мистецької гри у побудові наративу художнього тексту. Евристичну плідність і ефективність протягом аналізу виявив наратологічний концепт «еквівалентності» (поетичної структури наративу, яка детермінується у позачасових зв’язках тематичних і формальних мотивів, зіставленнях і протиставленнях у тексті, що оголюють кут зору персонажів та зовні безпристрасного оповідача), докладно розроблений німецьким славістом В. Шмідом. (The game as «ornamenting» and one of the principles in narrative construction is discussed in the article. The narratological theory of «equivalency» elaborated by V. Shmid is rather efficient through the analysis of literary paradigms development.

Наративна організація роману Миколи Вінграновського «Северин Наливайко» (Narrative organization of Mykola Vinhranovsky’s novel «Severyn Nalyvayko»)

У статті розглядаються особливості художньої майстерності Миколи Вінграновського-прозаїка на прикладі матеріалу роману письменника «Северин Наливайко». Евристичну плідність і ефективність протягом аналізу наративної організації твору виявив наратологічний концепт «текстової інтерференції», докладно розроблений німецьким славістом В.Шмідом. (The article deals with the problems of M. Vinhranovsky’s artistic skill as a prosaist on the material of «Severyn Nalyvayko» novel. M. Vingranovsky could successfully combine everything in the novel: the descriptions, the associations, the necessary artistic detail, and careful selection of events. The narratological theory of «text interference» elaborated by V. Shmid is rather efficient through the analysis of literary paradigms development. All manifestations of interference in the text are used to demonstrate the characters and their mental flow. Narrator in the novel appears in the new position, became a part of some kind of dialogue in which he and his hero are involved. Through the association, reflection, vizions, internal monologues, improper direct speech the writer deeply penetrates into the inner world of his characters who become also the witnesses of the story.

Copyright © Author(s) 2022. What is fiction about, and what is it good for? An influential family of theories sees fiction as rooted in adaptive simulation mechanisms. In this view, our propensity to create and enjoy narrative fictions was selected and maintained due to the training that we get from mentally simulating situations relevant to our survival and reproduction. We put forward and test a precise version of this claim, the “ordeal simulation hypothesis”. It states that fictional narrative primarily simulates “ordeals”: situations where a person’s reaction might dramatically improve or decrease her fitness, such as deadly aggressions, or decisions on long-term matrimonial commitments. We study mortality in fictional and non-fictional texts as a partial test for this view. Based on an analysis of 744 extensive summaries of twentieth century American novels of various genres, we show that the odds of dying (in a given year) are vastly exaggerated in fiction compared to reality, but specifically more exaggerated for homicides as compared to suicides, accidents, war-related, or natural deaths. This evidence supports the ordeal simulation hypothesis but is also compatible with other accounts

Results of working out of the program for individual forecasting of quality and technical condition of means of medical electronics by a method of threshold logic and algorithm of work with the program are resulted by working out of a solving rule for forecasting. The operator of forecasting allows to develop a software package operatively and qualitatively. It can be used both in the educational purposes, and for real individual forecasting of a technical condition concrete of means of medical electronics.Приведены результаты разработки программы для индивидуального прогнозирования качества и технического состояния средств медицинской электроники (СМЭ) методом пороговой логики и алгоритм работы с программой при разработке решающего правила для прогнозирования. Программный пакет позволяет оперативно и качественно разработать оператор прогнозирования. Он может использоваться как в учебных целях, так и для реального индивидуального прогнозирования технического состояния конкретного СМЭ
