As
Changes in the working world have been moving towards greater gender equality, but it
remains more difficult for women to achieve executive leadership positions. Women face
numerous significant challenges on the road to leadership positions. The present
dissertation is a mixed study where a set of questions was posed to women (over 25 years
old) who own SMEs and to girls (under 25 years old) who desire career advancement.
The main objective is to understand how these women perceive their position in the
context in which they are inserted and how they visualize the future of female leadership.
On the other hand, we sought to ascertain the girls' perspective, as the time space and
context are different. The results show that career difficulties and goals are influenced by
the family and social context, and that both women and girls perceive gender differences,
using motivation and resilience to meet the daily challenges posed to them
An analysis of bitcoin as an asset
Mestrado Bolonha em Mathematical FinanceBitcoin is nowadays one of the most popular topics among the public and academia. The increased popularity and market capitalization of Bitcoin have generated much controversy among the scientific community about whether this cryptocurrency can be used as an asset or as a new form of a medium of exchange. With these questions in mind, I decided first to assess if Bitcoin can be incorporated into one singular category, asset, or medium of exchange; or if it is a mix of these two. Second, enquire how its variance shifts according to shocks in the market and if this reaction can be compared with Gold. Third, infer if there is an asymmetry effect in volatility, i.e., if bad news generate less volatility than good news. The conclusions drawn from this study are that Bitcoin does not fit entirely into one category. There is no clear indication as to whether Bitcoin is a medium of exchange or an asset. Regarding its behavior in the market, it is possible to conclude that Bitcoin does not have management capabilities, and concerning the comparison with Gold, I concluded that Gold is still superior in terms of being a good asset to hedge market risk. The asymmetry effect is not significant in Bitcoin, whereas in Gold, several studies proved that this effect is one of the main properties that make Gold a safe haven.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Millennium BCP in the african markets
This master thesis is presented in the form of a case study and portrays the
internationalization of a Portuguese company, Millennium bcp, to the emerging
African markets (Mozambique and Angola), highlighting the main challenges and the
strategic options applied in each of them.
Millennium bcp is the biggest private bank in Portugal that has soon decided to
expand its operations to Angola and Mozambique. It first moved to Mozambique with
the brand Millennium Bim and only some years later to the Angolan market with
Millennium Angola. While Bim soon got positive results, achieving a leadership
position in the Mozambique market and now tries at all costs to preserve it;
Millennium Angola has a more reduced presence in the Angolan market and couldn’t
achieve the strong desired positioning yet, taking its CEO to a dilemma situation.
The present case study should be used as a teaching tool, since it allows the
analysis and further discussion, using strategic frameworks that are taught in class,
of a real life situation.
Neurodevelopment outcomes in the first five years of the life of children with Transposition of the Great Arteries surgically corrected in the neonatal period
Congenital heart defects are the most common abnormalities at birth, resulting in many short and long-term consequences. In patients with Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA), surgical correction may achieve definitive treatment, so a thorough knowledge of the long-term outcomes, particularly neurodevelopment outcomes, is essential. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to study the neurodevelopment outcomes in the first five years of the life of children submitted to corrective surgery for TGA in the neonatal period.
A total of 18 reports from 17 studies were included in the systematic review, assessing 809 individuals with surgically corrected TGA. The neurodevelopmental outcomes were assessed with the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development (BSID) and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC). Mean Mental Development Index (MDI) and Psychomotor Development Index (PDI) were within the average values from 1 to 3 years of age, and mean full-scale global IQ, verbal IQ and performance IQ scores, from four to five years, were within the reference range.
This study revealed no major impairments in global neurodevelopment scores until five years of age in children submitted to corrective surgery for TGA in the neonatal period. Further studies are needed to identify specific risk factors and early markers of later impairment to guide the establishment of early interventions
