    An Abbreviated Method for the Quality Control of Pollen Counters

    We present an abbreviated method for conducting large scale quality control (QC) exercises over limited time periods, which was used for examining the proficiency of technicians involved in the electronic Pollen Information Network (ePIN). The goal was for technicians to have their analysis skills evaluated at least twice: (1) by having at least one of their slides successfully checked by other counters in the ePIN network and (2) by successfully examining at least one additional slide from other sites. Success was judged as a relative difference (RDif %) ≤ 30% between the two daily average pollen concentrations. A total of 21 sites participated in the ePIN QC exercise. All of the results for total pollen had RDif % 30%, three for Betula and two for Poaceae pollen. Of these, three were slides containing < 40 pollen/m3 daily average and two were for sites that had microscopes with small fields of view and examined < 10% of the slide surface. More than 80% of the participants had at least two slides successfully checked by someone else in the network, and all of the participants had one slide successfully examined. The latter is comparable to a traditional ring test where only one slide is sent to participating sites. The method described here enabled a large number of technicians to be examined in a short period of time and represents a viable alternative to other approaches that can take many months to complete

    Suzaku Observations of the Circinus galaxy

    We report Suzaku observations of the active, Compton-thick Circinus galaxy. Observations were obtained with both the X-ray Imaging spectrometer (XIS) and the Hard X-ray Detector (HXD). Below 10 keV, the nuclear spectrum is dominated by radiation reflected from cold dense gas of high column density, while above 13 keV the radiation is directly transmitted nuclear emission seen through a column density of $~ 4 x 10^{24} cm^-2. In the 0.2--10 keV band, the XIS spectrum is contaminated at 5% level by the brightest off-nuclear source in Circinus (CG X-1), but drops to 1% in the 5-10 keV and is negligible at higher energies. We find no significant evidence for variability in the hard (>12 keV) emission. The Circinus is marginally detected with the HXD/GSO in the 50--100 keV band at 2.5\sigma level. We model the 3-70 keV band XIS+PIN spectra with a four components: the Compton transmitted nuclear emission, the reflected nuclear emission, a soft power law (representing a combination of scattered nuclear emission, extended emission and contamination by sources in the galaxy below a few keV). The hard nuclear power-law is found to have a photon index Gamma_h ~= 1.6, very similar to the soft power-law. The high energy cut-off is E_C ~= 49 keV. These results agree with those from BeppoSax. An extrapolation of this model up to the GSO band shows good agreement with the GSO spectrum and supports our detection of the Circinus up to ~= 100keV.Comment: ApJ accepte

    Infrared and millimetre-wavelength evidence for cold accretion within a z=2.83 Lyman α blob

    This paper discusses infrared and millimetre-wavelength observations of a Lyman α blob (LAB) discovered by Smith & Jarvis, a candidate for ionization by the cold accretion scenario discussed in Fardal et al. and Dijkstra et al.We have observed the counterpart galaxy at infrared wavelengths in deep observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope using the IRAC 3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8.0 μm and MIPS 24 μm bands, as well as using the Max-Planck Millimeter Bolometer (MAMBO-2) at a wavelength of 1.2mm with the IRAM 30 m telescope. These observations probe the ≳ 95 kpc Lyman α halo for the presence of obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN) components or the presence of a violent period of star formation invoked by other models of ionization for these mysterious objects. 24 μm observations suggest that an obscured AGN would be insufficiently luminous to ionize the halo, and that the star formation rate within the halo may be as low as <140M⊙ yr^−1 depending on the model spectral energy distribution (SED) used. This is reinforced by our observations at 1.2mm using MAMBO-2, which yield an upper limit of star formation rate <550M⊙ yr^−1 from our non-detection to a 3σ flux limit of 0.86 mJy beam^−1. Finding no evidence for either AGN or extensive star formation, we conclude that this halo is ionized by a cold accretion process. We derive model SEDs for the host galaxy, and use the Bruzual & Charlot and Maraston libraries to show that the galaxy is well described by composite stellar populations of total mass 3.42 ± 0.13 × 10^11 or 4.35 ± 0.16 × 10^11M⊙ depending on the model SEDs used

    Moving Targets: Geographically Routed Human Movement Networks

    We introduce a new communication paradigm, Human-to-human Mobile Ad hoc Networking (HuManet), that exploits smartphone capabilities and human behavior to create decentralized networks for smartphone-to-smartphone message delivery. HuManets support stealth command-and-control messaging for mobile BotNets, covert channels in the presence of an observer who monitors all cellular communication, and distributed protocols for querying the state or content of targeted mobile devices. In this paper, we introduce techniques for constructing HumaNets and describe protocols for efficiently routing and addressing messages. In contrast to flooding or broadcast schemes that saturate the network and aggressively consume phone resources (e.g., batteries), our protocols exploit human mobility patterns to significantly increase communication efficiency while limiting the exposure of HuManets to mobile service providers. Our techniques leverage properties of smartphones – in particular, their highly synchronized clocks and ability to discern location information – to construct location profiles for each device. HuManets’ fully-distributed and heuristic-based routing protocols route messages towards phones with location profiles that are similar to those of the intended receiver, enabling efficient message delivery with limited effects to end-to-end latency

    Chandra observations of NGC4698: a Seyfert-2 with no absorption

    We present Chandra ACIS-S observations of the enigmatic Seyfert-2 galaxy NGC4698. This object together with several other bona-fide Seyfert-2 galaxies show no absorption in the low spatial resolution ASCA data, in contrast to the standard unification models. Our Chandra observations of NGC4698 probe directly the nucleus allowing us to check whether nearby sources contaminate the ASCA spectrum. Indeed, the Chandra observations show that the ASCA spectrum is dominated by two nearby AGN. The X-ray flux of NGC4698 is dominated by a nuclear source with luminosity L(0.3-8 keV) ~ 10^39, erg s-1 coincident with the radio nucleus. Its spectrum is well represented by a power-law, ~ 2.2, obscured by a small column density of 5x10^20 cm-2 suggesting that NGC4698 is an atypical Seyfert galaxy. On the basis of its low luminosity we then interpret NGC4698 as a Seyfert galaxy which lacks a broad-line region.Comment: 12 pages, to appear in Ap

    Orientation imaging of macro-sized polysilicon grains on wafers using spatially resolved acoustic spectroscopy

    Due to its economical production process polysilicon, or multicrystalline silicon, is widely used to produce solar cell wafers. However, the conversion efficiencies are often lower than equivalent monocrystalline or thin film cells, with the structure and orientation of the silicon grains strongly linked to the efficiency. We present a non-destructive laser ultrasonic inspection technique, capable of characterising large (52 x 76 mm2) photocell's microstructure – measurement times, sample surface preparation and system upgrades for silicon scanning are discussed. This system, known as spatially resolved acoustic spectroscopy (SRAS) could be used to optimise the polysilicon wafer production process and potentially improve efficiency

    Interpreting Mendelian-randomization estimates of the effects of categorical exposures such as disease status and educational attainment

    BACKGROUND: Mendelian randomization has been previously used to estimate the effects of binary and ordinal categorical exposures—e.g. Type 2 diabetes or educational attainment defined by qualification—on outcomes. Binary and categorical phenotypes can be modelled in terms of liability—an underlying latent continuous variable with liability thresholds separating individuals into categories. Genetic variants influence an individual’s categorical exposure via their effects on liability, thus Mendelian-randomization analyses with categorical exposures will capture effects of liability that act independently of exposure category. METHODS AND RESULTS: We discuss how groups in which the categorical exposure is invariant can be used to detect liability effects acting independently of exposure category. For example, associations between an adult educational-attainment polygenic score (PGS) and body mass index measured before the minimum school leaving age (e.g. age 10 years), cannot indicate the effects of years in full-time education on this outcome. Using UK Biobank data, we show that a higher educational-attainment PGS is strongly associated with lower smoking initiation and higher odds of glasses use at age 15 years. These associations were replicated in sibling models. An orthogonal approach using the raising of the school leaving age (ROSLA) policy change found that individuals who chose to remain in education to age 16 years before the reform likely had higher liability to educational attainment than those who were compelled to remain in education to age 16 years after the reform, and had higher income, lower pack-years of smoking, higher odds of glasses use and lower deprivation in adulthood. These results suggest that liability to educational attainment is associated with health and social outcomes independently of years in full-time education. CONCLUSIONS: Mendelian-randomization studies with non-continuous exposures should be interpreted in terms of liability, which may affect the outcome via changes in exposure category and/or independently
