Educational differences in all-cause mortality by marital status
Using life table measures, we compare educational differentials in all-cause mortality at ages 40 to 70 in Bulgaria to those in Finland and the United States. Specifically, we assess whether the relationship between education and mortality is modified by marital status. Although high education and being married are associated with lower mortality in all three countries, absolute educational differences tend to be smaller among married than unmarried individuals. Absolute differentials by education are largest for Bulgarian men, but in relative terms educational differences are smaller among Bulgarian men than in Finland and the U.S. Among women, Americans experience the largest education-mortality gradients in both relative and absolute terms. The relationship between social acknowledgment and prolonged grief symptoms: a multiple mediation effect of beliefs about the goodness and controllability of grief-related emotions
Background: Social acknowledgment is a protective factor for survivors of trauma. However, the role of social acknowledgment in association with prolonged grief symptoms has not yet been established.Objectives: The current study aims to explore the relationship between social acknowledgment and prolonged grief via two beliefs foundational to how people think about grief-related emotions (1) goodness (i.e. whether emotions are desirable, useful, or unwanted and harmful), and (2) controllability (i.e. whether emotions are regulated according to our will or involuntary, arising of their own accord). These effects were explored in two different cultural samples of bereaved people.Methods: One hundred and fifty-four German-speaking and two hundred and sixty-two Chinese bereaved people who lost their loved ones completed questionnaires assessing social acknowledgment, beliefs about the goodness and controllability of grief-related emotions, and prolonged grief symptoms.Results: Correlation analyses showed that social acknowledgment was positively linked with stronger beliefs about the goodness and controllability of grief-related emotions and negatively related to prolonged grief symptoms. Beliefs about the goodness and controllability of grief-related emotions correlated negatively with prolonged grief symptoms. Multiple mediation analyses suggested that beliefs about the controllability and goodness of grief-related emotions mediated the link between social acknowledgment and prolonged grief symptoms. Cultural groups did not moderate the above model.Conclusion: Social acknowledgment may be related to bereavement adjustment consequences via the roles of beliefs about the goodness and controllability of grief-related emotions. Chittenden County Child Care Providers & Conflict Implementing Sick Child Guidelines
Introduction: Nationwide, 61% of children under age five are enrolled in a form of non-parental care. Problems arise when a child becomes sick and is not able toattend daycare or has to be sent home. Parents must either miss work to care for their child or find someone else to care for them. Since there is stress surrounding taking time off, and because the criteria used to exclude children from child care can be ambiguous, parents may feel that their child doesn’t need to be sent home. Each child care provider has to set up exclusion criteria that meet state licensing requirements. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) developed exclusion guidelines specifically for childcare settings in 2006, but most daycare providers and pediatricians are unaware of its existence. The role of timing and prototypical causality on how preschoolers fast-map novel verb meanings
In controlled contexts, young children find it more difficult to learn novel words for actions than words for objects: Imai et al. (2008) found that English-speaking three-year-olds mistakenly choose a novel object as a referent for a novel verb about 42% of the time despite hearing the verb in a transitive sentence. The current two studies investigated whether English three- and five-year-old children would find resultative actions easier (since they are prototypically causative) than the non-resultative, durative event types used in Imai et al.’s studies. The reverse was true. Furthermore, if the novel verbs were taught on completion of the action, this did not improve performance, which contrasts with previous findings (e.g. Tomasello & Kruger, 1992). Our resultative actions were punctual, change-of-location events which may be less visually salient than the non-resulative, durative actions. Visual salience may play a greater role than does degree of action causality in the relative ease of verb learning even at three years
Finite Number and Finite Size Effects in Relativistic Bose-Einstein Condensation
Bose-Einstein condensation of a relativistic ideal Bose gas in a rectangular
cavity is studied. Finite size corrections to the critical temperature are
obtained by the heat kernel method. Using zeta-function regularization of
one-loop effective potential, lower dimensional critical temperatures are
calculated. In the presence of strong anisotropy, the condensation is shown to
occur in multisteps. The criteria of this behavior is that critical
temperatures corresponding to lower dimensional systems are smaller than the

Support needs and barriers to accessing support:Baseline results of a mixed-methods national survey of people bereaved during the COVID-19 pandemic
BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic is a mass bereavement event which has profoundly disrupted grief experiences. Understanding support needs and access to support among people bereaved at this time is crucial to ensuring appropriate bereavement support infrastructure. AIM: To investigate grief experiences, support needs and use of formal and informal bereavement support among people bereaved during the pandemic. DESIGN: Baseline results from a longitudinal survey. Support needs and experiences of accessing support are reported using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis of free-text data. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: 711 adults bereaved in the UK between March and December 2020, recruited via media, social media, national associations and community/charitable organisations. RESULTS: High-level needs for emotional support were identified. Most participants had not sought support from bereavement services (59%, n = 422) or their General-Practitioner (60%, n = 428). Of participants who had sought such support, over half experienced difficulties accessing bereavement services (56%, n = 149)/General-Practitioner support (52%, n = 135). About 51% reported high/severe vulnerability in grief; among these, 74% were not accessing bereavement or mental-health services. Barriers included limited availability, lack of appropriate support, discomfort asking for help and not knowing how to access services. About 39% (n = 279) experienced difficulties getting support from family/friends, including relational challenges, little face-to-face contact and disrupted collective mourning. The perceived uniqueness of pandemic bereavement and wider societal strains exacerbated their isolation. CONCLUSIONS: People bereaved during the pandemic have high levels of support needs alongside difficulties accessing support. We recommend increased provision and tailoring of bereavement services, improved information on support options and social/educational initiatives to bolster informal support and ameliorate isolation
The atmospheric neutrino anomaly without maximal mixing?
We consider a pattern of neutrino masses in which there is an approximate
mass degeneracy between the two mass eigenstates most coupled to the
and flavour eigenstates. Earth-matter effects can lift this
degeneracy and induce an effectively maximal mixing between these two
generations. This occurs if 's contain comparable admixtures of the
degenerate eigenstates, even rather small ones. This provides an explanation of
the atmospheric neutrino anomaly in which the {\it ab initio} introduction of a
large mixing angle is not required. To test this possibility we perform a novel
and detailed analysis of the 52 kiloton-year SuperKamiokande data, and we find
that in a large region of parameter space the corresponding confidence levels
are excellent. The most recent results from the Chooz reactor experiment,
however, severely curtail this region, so that the conventional scenario with
nearly maximal mixing angles --which we also analyse in detail-- is supported

Reactor-based Neutrino Oscillation Experiments
The status of neutrino oscillation searches employing nuclear reactors as
sources is reviewed. This technique, a direct continuation of the experiments
that proved the existence of neutrinos, is today an essential tool in
investigating the indications of oscillations found in studying neutrinos
produced in the sun and in the earth's atmosphere. The low-energy of the
reactor \nuebar makes them an ideal tool to explore oscillations with small
mass differences and relatively large mixing angles.
In the last several years the determination of the reactor anti-neutrino flux
and spectrum has reached a high degree of accuracy. Hence measurements of these
quantities at a given distance L can be readily compared with the expectation
at L = 0, thus testing \nuebar disappearance.
While two experiments, Chooz and Palo Verde, with baselines of about 1 km and
thus sensitive to the neutrino mass differences associated with the atmospheric
neutrino anomaly, have collected data and published results recently, an
ambitious project with a baseline of more than 100 km, Kamland, is preparing to
take data. This ultimate reactor experiment will have a sensitivity sufficient
to explore part of the oscillation phase space relevant to solar neutrino
scenarios. It is the only envisioned experiment with a terrestrial source of

Mutual exclusivity of hyaluronan and hyaluronidase in invasive group A Streptococcus
A recent analysis of group A Streptococcus (GAS) invasive infections in Australia has shown a predominance of M4 GAS, a serotype recently reported to lack the antiphagocytic hyaluronic acid (HA) capsule. Here, we use molecular genetics and bioinformatics techniques to characterize 17 clinical M4 isolates associated with invasive disease in children during this recent epidemiology. All M4 isolates lacked HA capsule, and whole genome sequence analysis of two isolates revealed the complete absence of the hasABC capsule biosynthesis operon. Conversely, M4 isolates possess a functional HA-degrading hyaluronate lyase (HylA) enzyme that is rendered nonfunctional in other GAS through a point mutation. Transformation with a plasmid expressing hasABC restored partial encapsulation in wild-type (WT) M4 GAS, and full encapsulation in an isogenic M4 mutant lacking HylA. However, partial encapsulation reduced binding to human complement regulatory protein C4BP, did not enhance survival in whole human blood, and did not increase virulence of WT M4 GAS in a mouse model of systemic infection. Bioinformatics analysis found no hasABC homologs in closely related species, suggesting that this operon was a recent acquisition. These data showcase a mutually exclusive interaction of HA capsule and active HylA among strains of this leading human pathogen
