Cross-lingual Question Answering with QED
We present improvements and modifications of the QED open-domain question answering system developed for TREC-2003 to make it cross-lingual for participation in the CrossLinguistic Evaluation Forum (CLEF) Question Answering Track 2004 for the source languages French and German and the target language English. We use rule-based question translation extended with surface pattern-oriented pre- and post-processing rules for question reformulation to create and English query from its French or German original. Our system uses deep processing for the question and answers, which requires efficient and radical prior search space pruning. For answering factoid questions, we report an accuracy of 16% (German to English) and 20% (French to English), respectively
Personality Measures Link Slower Binocular Rivalry Switch Rates to Higher Levels of Self-Discipline
In this paper we investigated the relation between personality and the rate of perceptual alternations during binocular rivalry. Studies have demonstrated that slower rivalry alternations are associated with a range of clinical conditions. It is less clear whether rivalry dynamics similarly co-vary with individual differences in psychological traits seen across non-clinical population. We assessed rivalry rates in a non-clinical population (n = 149) and found slower rivalry alternations were positively related r(149) = 0.20, p = 0.01 to industriousness, a trait characterized by a high level of self-discipline using the Big Five Aspect Scales (BFAS). Switch rates were also negatively related r(149) = -0.20, p = 0.01 to cognitive disorganization, a schizotypy trait capturing schizophrenia-like symptoms of disorganization using the Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of feelings and Experiences (O-LIFE). Furthermore, we showed that that these relations with personality were unaffected by the inclusion or exclusion of mixed percept in the response analysis. Together these results are relevant to theoretical models of rivalry investigating individual differences in rivalry temporal dynamics and they may reduce concerns about the impact of task compliance in clinical research using rivalry as a potential diagnostic tool

Testing Gluino Spin with Three-Body Decays
We examine the possibility of distinguishing a supersymmetric gluino from a
Kaluza-Klein gluon of universal extra dimensions (UED) at the Large Hadron
Collider (LHC). We focus on the case when all kinematically allowed tree-level
decays of this particle are 3-body decays into two jets and a massive daughter
(typically weak gaugino or Kaluza-Klein weak gauge boson). We show that the
shapes of the dijet invariant mass distributions differ significantly in the
two models, as long as the mass of the decaying particle mA is substantially
larger than the mass of the massive daughter mB. We present a simple analysis
estimating the number of events needed to distinguish between the two models
under idealized conditions. For example, for mA/mB=10, we find the required
number of events to be of order several thousand, which should be available at
the LHC within a few years. This conclusion is confirmed by a parton level
Monte Carlo study which includes the effects of experimental cuts and the

Spin Discrimination in Three-Body Decays
The identification of the correct model for physics beyond the Standard Model
requires the determination of the spin of new particles. We investigate to
which extent the spin of a new particle can be identified in scenarios
where it decays dominantly in three-body decays . Here we
assume that is a candidate for dark matter and escapes direct detection at
a high energy collider such as the LHC. We show that in the case that all
intermediate particles are heavy, one can get information on the spins of
and at the LHC by exploiting the invariant mass distribution of the two
standard model fermions. We develop a model-independent strategy to determine
the spins without prior knowledge of the unknown couplings and test it in a
