    Free-piston Stirling hydraulic engine and drive system for automobiles

    The calculated fuel economy for an automotive free piston Stirling hydraulic engine and drive system using a pneumatic accumulator with the fuel economy of both a conventional 1980 spark ignition engine in an X body class vehicle and the estimated fuel economy of a 1984 spark ignition vehicle system are compared. The results show that the free piston Stirling hydraulic system with a two speed transmission has a combined fuel economy nearly twice that of the 1980 spark ignition engine - 21.5 versus 10.9 km/liter (50.7 versus 25.6 mpg) under comparable conditions. The fuel economy improvement over the 1984 spark ignition engine was 81 percent. The fuel economy sensitivity of the Stirling hydraulic system to system weight, number of transmission shifts, accumulator pressure ratio and maximum pressure, auxiliary power requirements, braking energy recovery, and varying vehicle performance requirements are considered. An important finding is that a multispeed transmission is not required. The penalty for a single speed versus a two speed transmission is about a 12 percent drop in combined fuel economy to 19.0 km/liter (44.7 mpg). This is still a 60 percent improvement in combined fuel economy over the projected 1984 spark ignition vehicle

    Inter-laboratory Characterisation of Apatite Reference Materials for Chlorine Isotope Analysis

    Here we report on a set of six apatite reference materials (chlorapatites MGMH#133648, TUBAF#38 and fluorapatites MGMH#128441A, TUBAF#37, 40, 50) which we have characterised for their chlorine isotope ratios; these RMs span a range of Cl mass fractions within the apatite Ca-10(PO4)(6)(F,Cl,OH)(2) solid solution series. Numerous apatite specimens, obtained from mineralogical collections, were initially screened for Cl-37/Cl-35 homogeneity using SIMS followed by delta Cl-37 characterisation by gas source mass spectrometry using both dual-inlet and continuous-flow modes. We also report major and key trace element compositions as determined by EPMA. The repeatability of our SIMS results was better than +/- 0.10% (1s) for the five samples with > 0.5% m/m Cl and +/- 0.19% (1s) for the low Cl abundance material (0.27% m/m). We also observed a small, but significant crystal orientation effect of 0.38% between the mean Cl-37/Cl-35 ratios measured on three oriented apatite fragments. Furthermore, the results of GS-IRMS analyses show small but systematic offset of delta Cl-37(SMOC) values between the three laboratories. Nonetheless, all studied samples have comparable chlorine isotope compositions, with mean 10(3)delta Cl-37(SMOC) values between +0.09 and +0.42 and in all cases with 1s <= +/- 0.25

    CiCUTS: Combining System Execution Modeling Tools with Continuous Integration Environments

    System execution modeling (SEM) tools provide an effec-tive means to evaluate the quality of service (QoS) of enter-prise distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems. SEM tools facilitate testing and resolving performance is-sues throughout the entire development life-cycle, rather than waiting until final system integration. SEM tools have not historically focused on effective testing. New techniques are therefore needed to help bridge the gap between the early integration capabilities of SEM tools and testing so developers can focus on resolving strategic integration and performance issues, as opposed to wrestling with tedious and error-prone low-level testing concerns. This paper provides two contributions to research on us-ing SEM tools to address enterprise DRE system integration challenges. First, we evaluate several approaches for com-bining continuous integration environments with SEM tools and describe CiCUTS, which combines the CUTS SEM tool with the CruiseControl.NET continuous integration envi-ronment. Second, we present a case study that shows how CiCUTS helps reduce the time and effort required to man-age and execute integration tests that evaluate QoS met-rics for a representative DRE system from the domain of shipboard computing. The results of our case study show that CiCUTS helps developers and testers ensure the per-formance of an example enterprise DRE system is within its QoS specifications throughout development, instead of waiting until system integration time to evaluate QoS.

    Expression of miRNA-106b in conventional renal cell carcinoma is a potential marker for prediction of early metastasis after nephrectomy

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>MicroRNAs are endogenously expressed regulatory noncoding RNAs. Previous studies have shown altered expression levels of several microRNAs in renal cell carcinoma.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We examined the expression levels of selected microRNAs in 38 samples of conventional renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and 10 samples of non-tumoral renal parenchyma using TaqMan real-time PCR method.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The expression levels of miRNA-155 (p < 0.0001), miRNA-210 (p < 0.0001), miRNA-106a (p < 0.0001) and miRNA-106b (p < 0.0001) were significantly over-expressed in tumor tissue, whereas the expression of miRNA-141 (p < 0.0001) and miRNA-200c (p < 0.0001) were significantly decreased in RCC samples. There were no significant differences between expression levels of miRNA-182 and miRNA-200b in tumor samples and renal parenchyma. Our data suggest that expression levels of miRNA-106b are significantly lower in tumors of patients who developed metastasis (p = 0.030) and miR-106b is a potential predictive marker of early metastasis after nephrectomy in RCC patients (long-rank p = 0.032).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We have confirmed previous observations obtained by miRNA microarray analysis using standardized real-time PCR method. For the first time, we have identified a prognostic significance of miRNA-106b, which, after validation on a larger group of patients, maybe useful as a promising biomarker in patients with RCC.</p

    Broadband Alfvénic excitation correlated to turbulence level in the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator plasmas

    During the first operational phase (OP1) of the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator, poloidal magnetic field fluctuations, B˙θ\dot{B}_{\theta}, were measured in several different plasma scenarios with a system of Mirnov coils. In the spectrograms, multiple frequency bands close together in frequency are observed below f = 600 kHz. Furthermore, a dominant feature is the appearance of a frequency band with the highest spectral amplitude centred between f=180220f = 180-220 kHz. The fluctuations are observed from the beginning of most W7-X plasmas of OP1, which were often operated solely with electron cyclotron resonance heating. The fluctuations show characteristics known from Alfvén waves and possibly Alfvén eigenmodes (AEs). However, the fast particle drive from heating sources, which is generally a driver necessary for the appearance of AEs in magnetic confinement plasmas, is absent in most of the analysed experiments. A characterization of the Alfvénic fluctuations measured during OP1 plasmas is possible using a newly developed tracking algorithm. In this paper, we extensively survey the different spectral properties of the fluctuations in correlation with plasma parameters and discuss possible driving mechanisms. The correlation studies of the dynamics of the possible ellipticity induced AEs indicate that Alfvén activity in the frequency interval between f=100450f = 100-450 kHz could be excited due to an interaction with turbulence, or profile effects also affecting the turbulence amplitude

    Comparison of drug prescribing before and during the COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-national European study

    Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on health care, with disruption to routine clinical care. Our aim was to describe changes in prescription drugs dispensing in the primary and outpatient sectors during the first year of the pandemic across Europe. Methods: We used routine administrative data on dispensed medicines in eight European countries (five whole countries, three represented by one region each) from January 2017 to March 2021 to compare the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic with the preceding 3 years. Results: In the 10 therapeutic subgroups with the highest dispensed volumes across all countries/regions the relative changes between the COVID-19 period and the year before were mostly of a magnitude similar to changes between previous periods. However, for drugs for obstructive airway diseases the changes in the COVID-19 period were stronger in several countries/regions. In all countries/regions a decrease in dispensed DDDs of antibiotics for systemic use (from −39.4% in Romagna to −14.2% in Scotland) and nasal preparations (from −34.4% in Lithuania to −5.7% in Sweden) was observed. We observed a stockpiling effect in the total market in March 2020 in six countries/regions. In Czechia the observed increase was not significant and in Slovenia volumes increased only after the end of the first lockdown. We found an increase in average therapeutic quantity per pack dispensed, which, however, exceeded 5% only in Slovenia, Germany, and Czechia. Conclusions: The findings from this first European cross-national comparison show a substantial decrease in dispensed volumes of antibiotics for systemic use in all countries/regions. The results also indicate that the provision of medicines for common chronic conditions was mostly resilient to challenges faced during the pandemic. However, there were notable differences between the countries/regions for some therapeutic areas
