Communicating with brand names in the sustainable Finnish fashion industry
The global textile industry has a significant environmental impact since the current system for producing, distributing and using clothing exhausts natural resources. However, while there has been a growing awareness of negative environmental impacts among customers, more and more clothing companies have aligned themselves with the principles of sustainability. This paper investigates whether and how clothing companies express the notion of environmental sustainability in their names. The data consist of 114 company and brand names in the sustainable Finnish textile industry, supplemented with information taken from the webpages of these companies. The analysis focuses on the semantic features of the names, and it is based on a cognitive-discursive view and metaphor theory. The choice of language has been examined as part of name semantics. Many companies have written the story behind the brand name on their website. Names can convey direct notions of sustainability and circular economy (Pure Waste, Relove, Upcycler). Names that consist of words referring to nature (Cocoon house, Weekendbee) have an indirect relation to corporate sustainability. Some names consist of a personal name, which underlines the responsibility of the brand, or a place name, which may highlight locality. Valuing local production is also behind the choice of Finnish as the language of the name.</p
Onomastics between Sacred and Profane
The
national epic of Finland, The Kalevala,
was published in 1835. It is based on Finnish oral poetry and old mythology.
The epic has influenced in many ways in Finnish culture, arts, society and
economy. The personal and place names of The
Kalevala are in use in the contemporary nomenclature, as well. The Kalevala
has had a special effect on commercial naming in Finland.
In
this paper, some examples of Finnish company and product names which are
inspired by The Kalevala are
examined. All these names have a metaphoric or symbolic meaning: they do not
tell anything about the referent directly, but their function is to arouse more
complicated associations in people’s minds. The material consists of company
and product names from the late 19th and early 20th
century as well as of contemporary commercial names.</p
Names in Focus: An Introduction to Finnish Onomastics
Names in Focus delves deep into the vast field of Finnish onomastics, covering place names, personal names, animal names, commercial names and names in literature. It provides the history and current trends in this area of research, and also supplements international terminology with the Finnish point of view on the subject. Brimming with examples and clear explanations, the book can be enjoyed by the most studious of researchers as well as the casual reader who has a genuine interest in the study of names
Kunnan nimellä on väliä
Kunnan nimellä on asukkaille suuri merkitys. Kotikunnan
nimen muuttaminen voi herättää kiihkeitä tunteita, minkä vuoksi kuntaliitostilanteissa
pitäisi käytännön asioiden lisäksi käsitellä perusteellisesti myös
nimikysymystä. Tämä käy ilmi Turun yliopiston tutkijoiden tekemästä
selvityksestä.</p
