    Nonproportionally Loaded Steel Beam-Columns and Flexibly-Connected Nonsway Frames

    A theoretical study of the inelastic stability of nonproportionally loaded steel beam-columns and flexibly-connected frames is conducted. Specifically, solution techniques are formulated to predict the nonlinear behavior of cross sections, spatial beam-columns, and nonsway plane frames under the combined influence of imperfections, flexible connections, and nonproportional loads. A set of new inelastic slope-deflection equations for imperfect members are derived and their use illustrated through in-depth studies of flexibly-connected portal and two-bay two-story frames. These equations are derived from a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The member studies are carried out using a second-order finite-difference solution to a set of nonlinear equilibrium equations, and coupled to a tangent stiffness procedure for cross sections. The majority of the theoretical studies are carried out on a conventional sequential computer. Efficient concurrent computational algorithms are also presented for biaxial bending and column stability problems. Results are obtained using a multiprocessor computer known as the Finite Element Machine. A critical appraisal of the conventional tangent modulus approach is presented in light of the analysis which includes elastic unloading of the material. It is found that the tangent modulus approach results in a fictitious ductile behavior. Furthermore, is is also realized that there is a dramatic difference in the nonlinear behavior between the proportionally and nonproportionally loaded structures. It is also observed that the proportionally loaded structures lead to rather unconservative peak loads. Additionally, members as integral parts of a frame may exhibit significantly different load-deformation behavior as compared to that of isolated members. The study on members and frames shows that nonproportional loads have a significant effect on their behavior and strength

    HbA1c is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease in association with oxidative stress in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

    Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of death in diabetic subjects. Glycaemic status is one of the vital factor involved in vascular complications. It was clear the effect of glycaemia on microvascular complications, but uncertain on macrovascular complications. As we know oxidative stress plays a major role in the development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Since oxidative stress is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, the study has designed to perceive an association between HbA1c and oxidative stress in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus for early prediction of cardiovascular events.Methods: 120 subjects were taken into the study, among these 60 type 2 diabetic subjects and remaining 60 subjects were healthy controls. The parameters like HbA1c, MDA and FRAP were estimated by established methods. ‘Kruskal Wallis’ test was used for variables in the parameters and Pearson correlation test was used to perform correlation between HbA1c and oxidative stress.Results: High level of HbA1c and MDA, low level of FRAP were found in patients with type 2 diabetes than healthy controls. The study was also found HbA1c have positive association with malondialdehyde (MDA) and negative association with FRAP.Conclusions: HbA1c was positively associated with oxidative stress in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. In this scenario, type 2 diabetic patients with high level of HbA1c might have risk of cardiovascular events

    Substructure analysis using NICE/SPAR and applications of force to linear and nonlinear structures

    Parallel computing studies are presented for a variety of structural analysis problems. Included are the substructure planar analysis of rectangular panels with and without a hole, the static analysis of space mast, using NICE/SPAR and FORCE, and substructure analysis of plane rigid-jointed frames using FORCE. The computations are carried out on the Flex/32 MultiComputer using one to eighteen processors. The NICE/SPAR runstream samples are documented for the panel problem. For the substructure analysis of plane frames, a computer program is developed to demonstrate the effectiveness of a substructuring technique when FORCE is enforced. Ongoing research activities for an elasto-plastic stability analysis problem using FORCE, and stability analysis of the focus problem using NICE/SPAR are briefly summarized. Speedup curves for the panel, the mast, and the frame problems provide a basic understanding of the effectiveness of parallel computing procedures utilized or developed, within the domain of the parameters considered. Although the speedup curves obtained exhibit various levels of computational efficiency, they clearly demonstrate the excellent promise which parallel computing holds for the structural analysis problem.     Adsorption and Microfiltration Processes to Treat Dye and Coffee Wastewater.

    Wastewater from coffee processing industry creates high biological and chemical oxygen demand in the surface water. In addition to coffee wastewater from coffee industry, dyes from textile industry enter surface water affecting water quality in terms of transmissivity of light. Adsorption is an economical wastewater treatment process to remove color from dye and coffee wastewater. In the current thesis, adsorption using low-cost adsorbents like peanut hull and onion peel are used to treat combined dye and coffee wastewater. Three representative dyes including acid black 48, disperse yellow 3, crystal violet certified with processed coffee is used in preparing batch adsorption samples. Using UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, absorbance and transmittance of the wastewater samples are measured. After adsorbents reach adsorption capacity, the suspended solids are removed using Whatman 41 microfilters. To understand the change in organic carbon before and after treatment in the wastewater, NPOC (Non-Purgeable Organic Carbon) is compared using Shimadzu TOC analyzer. This thesis focuses on the two-stage treatment process of adsorption and microfiltration in a binary mixture of dye and coffee wastewater. Increasing Adsorbent dosage in the representative wastewater samples gives us the idea of optimum dosage required in the treatment process. The comparative study of adsorbent dosage with transmittance and NPOC gives us an understanding of the efficiency of low-cost adsorbents when compared to Powdered Activated Carbon

    Implementation of a MSP430-based ultrasonic distance measurement module

    This application report describes a distance-measuring system based on ultrasonic sound utilizing the MSP430F413 ultralow-power microcontroller. The system transmits a burst of ultrasonic sound waves towards the subject and then receives the corresponding echo. The MSP430 integrated analog comparator Comparator_A is used to detect the arrival of the echo to the system. The time taken for the ultrasonic burst to travel the distance from the system to the subject and back to the system is accurately measured by the MSP430. Assuming the speed of sound in air at room temperature to be 1100 ft/s, the MSP430 computes the distance between the system and the subject and displays it using a two-digit static LCD driven by its integrated LCD driver. The distance is displayed in inches with an accuracy of ±1 inch. The minimum distance that this system can measure is eight inches and is limited by the transmitter’s transducer settling-time. The maximum distance that can be measured is ninetynine inches. The amplitude of the echo depends on the reflecting material, shape, and size. Sound-absorbing targets such as carpets and reflecting surfaces less than two square feet in area reflect poorly. The maximum measurable range is lower for such subjects. If the amplitude of the echo received by the system is so low that it is not detectable by the Comparator_A, the system goes out of range. This is indicated by displaying the error message E

    Impact of honey-enriched mulberry diet on the energy metabolism of the silkworm, Bombyx mori

    The present study was taken-up with a view to clearly define the role of oxidative phosphorylation vis-a-vis transdeamination in Bombyx mori metamorphosis, under the influence of honey-enriched mulberry diet. Therefore, the study examined the accumulation and utilization patterns of carbohydrate (glycogen, trehalose, glucose) and non-carbohydrate energy reserves (proteins, amino acids) in its fat body during larval, pupal and adult stages. In accordance with Hutchinson’s investment principle, the energy reserves invested during larval stage are partly used in pupal stage and those invested during larval and pupal stages are used in adult stage. Their utilization patterns are correlated with the activity levels of succinate (SDH) and glutamate (GDH) dehydrogenases and aspartate (AAT) and alanine (ALAT) aminotransferases and changes thereof were interpreted in terms of glycolytic oxidative phosphorylation and non-glycolytic transdeamination.  The trends in mass incorporation rates vis-à-vis enzyme activities indicated that the metabolism-related energy needs of all metamorphic events are majorly met through a gluconeogenetic mechanism called transdeamination, while the behavioural-related energy demands of larval and pupal stages are fulfilled through glycolytic-based oxidative phosphorylation. The activity trends further indicated that AAT plays major role in meeting the energy needs of larva and pupa, while GDH predominantly meets the energy requirements of reproduction in adults. The honey-enriched mulberry diet showed stage-specific and pathway-specific impacts on energy metabolism. It positively reinforced the energy metabolism in larval stage, but showed no significant effect in pupal and adult stages. Similarly, it showed more promising effect on glycolytic-oxidative phosphorylation and null or neutral effect on transdeamination

    Finite Element Analysis of Squirrel Cage Ball Bearingsfor Gas Turbine Engines

    Squirrel cage ball bearings are used in recent aero engines to overcome the vibration andstability problems associated with rotor systems supported by conventional bearings. The criticaldesign feature of squirrel cage bearing is to provide flexible support to rotor system. The outerring of the bearing is configured such that it acts as a flexible bearing support, and hence, weightis minimised. The bearing is mounted directly on a rigid intermediate casing of a gas turbineengine. Finite element analysis helps to obtain a suitable geometry at the design stage. A 3-Dmodel of the bearing is created using IDEAS software. Finite element analysis using contactelement has been carried out for finding the deformation and stresses in the webs at variouslocations using ANSYS software. The deformations are compared with those of experimentalvalues for an axial load. The deformation in the webs is used to check the pressure balance inthe compressor and the load acting on the bearing. Finally, a procedure for doing the finiteelement analysis of ball bearings for combined axial and radial load is laid down
