Le Pleniglacial, the north-west during the Upper Pleniglacial, and from south-southwest throughout the Younger Dryas. Here, we connect changing wind directions to seasonal variations in aeolian transport. Comparing annual azimuthal distribution of current wind regimes with wind regime models for LGM suggests that during the Upper Pleniglacial the dominant aeolian transport season shifted towards the summer, i.e. after seasonally frozen ground thawed and snow cover melted. Conversely, Middle Pleniglacial and Younger Dryas wind regimes reflect a general deflation during the winter.
Cumulative distribution of the stretching of vortical structures in isotropic turbulence
By using a Navier-Stokes isotropic turbulent field numerically simulated in the box with a discretization of 1024^3 [Biferale et al. (2005)], we show that the probability of having a stretching-tilting larger than twice the local enstrophy is very small. This probability decreases if we try to filter out the large scales, while it increases filtering out the small scales. This is basically due to the suppression of the compact structures (blobs)

The surface lithic archaeological record is exposed to various post-depositional agents, which trigger a series of modifications which are part of the formation processes of the assemblages that archaeologists recover. The study of these modifications provides essential information when proposing behavioral interpretations about past human groups. This paper highlights the relevance of the application of a taphonomic program to the study of surface lithic assemblages. To accomplish this, the advances made in three case studies of desert / semi-desert zones of Argentina were considered. Among the methodologies developed in each case are naturalistic observations, sampling, experimentation and studies at the artifact scale, for example, analysis of wind abrasion. From the problems analyzed in each case it was possible to recognize the role of wind erosion and / or circulation of surface water, or the trampling of fauna, which are agents of transformation that affect the stability of surface lithic assemblages and their quantitative and qualitative attributes. The assembly of a taphonomic program allows us to analyze the effects generated by post-depositional processes and to know the preserved or transformed nature of the lithic contexts with which we work.Fil: Carranza, Eugenia. Dynamics and sources of last glacial aeolian deposition in southwest France derived from dune patterns, grain-size gradients and geochemistry, and reconstruction of efficient wind directions
Dune pattern, grain-size gradients and geochemistry were used to investigate the sources and dynamics of aeolian deposition during the last glacial in southwest France. The coversands form widespread fields of low-amplitude ridges (zibars), whereas Younger Dryas parabolic dunes mainly concentrate in corridors and along rivers. Spatial modelling of grain-size gradients combined with geochemical analysis points to a genetic relationship between coversands and loess, the latter resulting primarily from dust produced by aeolian abrasion of the coversands. The alluvium of the Garonne river provided also significant amounts of dust at a more local scale. The geochemical composition of loess shows much lower scattering than that of coversands, due to stronger homogenisation during transport in the atmosphere. Overall, sandy loess and loess deposits decrease in thickness away from the coversands. Dune orientation and grain-size gradients suggest that the efficient winds blew respectively from the W to the NW during the glacial, and the W-SW during the Younger Dryas. A comparison between the wind directions derived from the proxy data and those provided by palaeoclimatic simulations suggests a change of the main transport season. Ground surface conditions and their evolution throughout the year, i.e. the length of the season with snow and frozen or moist topsoil, and the seasonal distribution of wind speeds able to cause deflation are thought to have been the main factors that controlled the transport season in the study area
