    The welfare of the farming community is a noble ideal that must be instilled in relation to all activities in society. Lunjen Village, is a village in Enrekang Regency where the majority of the population earns income from agriculture. Agricultural zakat is one of the obligations that must be fulfilled but the partisipation in implementing agricultural zakat is considered to be very lacking in almost all regions. This study aims to see how the awareness of farmers in Lunjen Village in paying agricultural zakat and its relation to the welfare of farmers in terms of the benefits of agricultural zakat on farmers. The method used is descriptive quantitative, with Likkert Scale calculations and Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS) analysis, then analyzed to see the benefits that can be felt if farmers routinely pay agricultural zakat. The results of this study found that the level of awareness of farmers is in the high category (61.67%) and the factors that have a positive and significant effect on farmers' awareness are the age factor with a Tcount of 4.322, the education level factor with a Tcount of 5.915 while the income level factor has an effect on negative and significant with a Tcount of -2.307. There are benefits that can be felt by farmers if they routinely pay agricultural zakat, namely that they can achieve farmer welfare, and economic development

    Covid–19 and the Civil Societies of South Asia

    This article presents the liberalisation of the economies of Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka as having downscaled the degree of support for public health care and systems for the needy in the countries of South Asia. Civil society organisations (CSOs) stepped in. Still, they often could not establish sufficient funds to fill the gap and, in many cases, the governments suppressed CSOs and the media due to their critical voice. In many cases, CSOs have toned down such critical voices and limited themselves to improving specific social situations as such activities have been allowed and in some cases supported by the governments. The outbreak of Covid–19 led to ad hoc mobilisation of the civil society and temporary changes in the working situation. Despite this, most governments have limited ability of CSOs to work during the pandemic. In a larger perspective, Covid–19 has not created anything approaching the kind of neoliberal crises predicted by Slovaj Žižek, but the new level of restrictions introduced leads one to consider if they will be turned back after the pandemic, or if the restrictions will be retained, as predicted by Giorgio Agamben

    Aircraft/island/ship/satellite intercomparison: Preliminary results from July 16, 1987

    The First ISCCP Regional Experiment (FIRE) objective of validating and improving satellite algorithms for inferring cloud properties from satellite radiances was one of the central motivating factors in the design of the specific field experimental strategies used in the July, 1987 marine stratocumulus intensive field observations (IFO). The in situ measuring platforms were deployed to take maximum advantage of redundant measurements (for intercomparison of the in situ sensors) and to provide optimal coverage within satellite images. One of the most ambitious of these strategies was the attempt to coordinate measurements from San Nicolas Island (SNI), the R/V Pt. Sur, the meteorological aircraft, and the satellites. For the most part, this attempt was frustrated by flight restrictions in the vicinity of SNI. The exception was the mission of July 16, 1987, which achieved remarkable success in the coordination of the platforms. This presentation concerns operations conducted by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Electra and how data from the Electra can be integrated with and compared to data from the Pt. Sur, SNI, and the satellites. The focus is on the large-scale, integrated picture of the conditions on July 16 from the perspective of the Electra's flight operations

    Bismuth-Gold absorber for large area TES spiderweb bolometer

    Large area spiderweb bolometer of about one centimetre diameter are required for matching multimode or quasi-optical cavities in microwave antenna for CMB measurements as proposed for the Large Scale Polarization Explorer balloon borne sky survey at 140, 220, 250 GHz. Possible applications at low frequencies, 40 GHz or less, in single mode are also foreseen. The main drawback of such large absorber is the achievement of an optimal trade-off among the thermal properties, like fast internal thermal diffusivity, heat capacity and milli-second recovery time and EM characteristics, like the matching impedance and EM power dissipation. In parallel with standard micropatterned gold film absorber deposited onto silicon nitride membrane, we have tested the Bismuth Gold in order to reduce the heat capacity even if with an increase of resistivity. Films of Bismuth Gold may have low resistivity under application of a proper post-production thermal cycle. We present the fabrication method of Bismuth Gold films for our microwave absorbers and the bolometer characterization at low temperature

    The Impact of Climate Change on Agriculture and Health Sectors in Tanzania: A review

    The impact of climate change in Tanzania is dynamic and differs among regions as they are impacted in different ways. While other regions experience normal rainfall and temperature patterns, others have continued to experience temperature extremes, severe droughts, decline in crops production coupled with food insecurity, extreme weather episodes of heavy rainfall associated with floods, loss of lives and infectious disease outbreaks. Despite the effects of climate change being recognized in the country, awareness is limited among local people, in particular the vulnerable communities. Thus, this review aims to raise awareness by giving a broader picture of impacts of climate change on agriculture and health sector. It reveals that in many parts of Tanzania, agriculture and health sectors may continue to suffer from the effects of climate change aggregated with limited awareness among communities. It is expected, that outbreaks of infectious diseases including malaria and cholera may increase as they correlate positively with high temperatures and rainfall. As a result, health problems and deaths of people, and reduced crops production will continue. Therefore, it is recommended that, the best way to overcome climate change is to invest effectively on the irrigation agriculture; and the health sector's budget should be enough to improve health care services and prepare for outbreaks of climate change sensitive diseases. Most importantly, provision of climate change awareness to the vulnerable communities must be seriously considered.     How product characteristics can guide measures for resource efficiency - A synthesis of assessment studies

    A circular economy aims at decoupling value creation from resource throughput. For circular economy to contribute to environmental and resource improvements, there is need for critical assessments regarding in what general situations, beyond individual cases, solutions may lead to improvements. On the product-level, there is need for synthesized knowledge accounting for a wide range of contexts and environmental impacts. We investigate what resource efficiency (RE) measures result in reduced physical flows and environmental impacts, depending on the characteristics of products and their life cycles. The study is limited to physical measures on a product system level, irrespective of manner of implementation. A library of comparative assessments (primarily life cycle assessments and material flow analyses) was built, covering a wide range of products and RE measures. A framework was formulated for analysing for which product characteristics a measure tends to improve RE, and under which contexts there are trade-offs to take into account. For example, sharing of products is best suited for durable and infrequently used products that tend not to reach their full technical lifetime. A trade-off is that sharing can increase transportation for accessing shared stock. The identified key product characteristics were: whether products are consumable or durable, active or passive, typically used for their full technical lifetimes or discarded before being worn out, the product’s frequency of use and whether function remains at a product’s end of use. Pace of development matters for suitability of measures for active, durable products, while complexity is relevant for restorative measures and recycling

    Assessing Dose-Exposure-Response Relationships of Miltefosine in Adults and Children using Physiologically-Based Pharmacokinetic Modeling Approach.

    Miltefosine is the first and only oral medication to be successfully utilized as an antileishmanial agent. However, the drug is associated with differences in exposure patterns and cure rates among different population groups e.g. ethnicity and age (i.e., children v adults) in clinical trials. In this work, mechanistic population physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models have been developed to study the dose-exposure-response relationship of miltefosine in in silico clinical trials and evaluate the differences in population groups, particularly children and adults. The Simcyp population pharmacokinetics platform was employed to predict miltefosine exposure in plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in a virtual population under different dosing regimens. The cure rate of a simulation was based on the percentage of number of the individual virtual subjects with AUC  > 535 µg⋅day/mL in the virtual population. It is shown that both adult and paediatric PBPK models of miltefosine can be developed to predict the PK data of the clinical trials accurately. There was no significant difference in the predicted dose-exposure-response of the miltefosine treatment for different simulated ethnicities under the same dose regime and the dose-selection strategies determined the clinical outcome of the miltefosine treatment. A lower cure rate of the miltefosine treatment in paediatrics was predicted because a lower exposure of miltefosine was simulated in virtual paediatric in comparison with adult virtual populations when they received the same dose of the treatment. The mechanistic PBPK model suggested that the higher fraction of unbound miltefosine in plasma was responsible for a higher probability of failure in paediatrics because of the difference in the distribution of plasma proteins between adults and paediatrics. The developed PBPK models could be used to determine an optimal miltefosine dose regime in future clinical trials. [Abstract copyright: © 2023. The Author(s).

    Modulation of CYP1A1 by PKC Inhibitors and TPA Pre-Treatments in MH1C1 Rat Hepatoma Cells Exposed to 3 -Methylcholanthrene

    Cytochrome P4501A1 (CYP1A1), an enzyme known to metabolize polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, is regulated by the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). The involvement of protein kinase C (PKC) in the regulation of AhR signal transduction pathway, has been widely studied but the role of specific PKC isoform(s) involved in this process it is not well clarified. To study which PKC isoform(s) is implicated in the regulation of CYP1A1, in the poorly tumorigenic MH1C1 rat hepatoma cells, we examined the effects of some PKC pharmacological inhibitors, Calphostin C (CAL), Staurosporine (STA) and H7, and of 12-0-tetradecanoyl phorbol 13-acetate (TPA), a PKC activator, on basal and 3- methylcholanthrene (MC)-induced CYP1A1 protein expression and mediated ethoxyresorufin O-deethylation (EROD) activity. In parallel, the activities of PKC-α, -βI, -δ and -ε isoforms, the most expressed in MH1C1 cells, were monitored. After pre-treatment with CAL, STA and H7, the MC-induced CYP1A1 protein and EROD activity were rapidly reduced with temporal profile similar to the profile of the activity of α and β1 PKC isoforms. Moreover, TPA pre-treatment induced a biphasic effect on EROD activity, and a decline of PKC -βI and -α, in first instance, and -δ and -ε activities later on. These findings clearly show that, in MH1C1 cells, PKC is involved in CYP1A1 regulation and that α and βI classic PKC isoforms play an active role in modulating this process
