Helimeric porphyrinoids: Stereostructure and chiral resolution of meso -tetraarylmorpholinochlorins
The synthesis and chiral resolution of free-base and Ni(II) complexes of a number of derivatives of meso-tetraphenylmorpholinochlorins, with and without direct ÎČ-carbon-to-o-phenyl linkages to the flanking phenyl groups, is described. The morpholinochlorins, a class of stable chlorin analogues, were synthesized in two to three steps from meso-tetraphenylporphyrin. The conformations and the relative stereostructures of a variety of free-base and Ni(II) complexes of these morpholinochlorins were elucidated by X-ray diffractometry. Steric and stereoelectronic arguments explain the relative stereoarray of the morpholino-substituents, which differ in the free-base and Ni(II) complexes, and in the monoalkoxy, ÎČ-carbon-to-o-phenyl linked morpholinochlorins, and the dialkoxy derivatives. The Ni(II) complexes were all found to be severely ruffled whereas the free-base chromophores are more planar. As a result of the helimeric distortion of their porphyrinoid chromophores, the ruffled macrocycles possess a stable inherent element of chirality. Most significantly, resolution of the racemic mixtures was achieved, both by classical methods via diastereomers and by HPLC on a chiral phase. Full CD spectra were recorded and modeled using quantum-chemical computational methods, permitting, for the first time, an assignment of the absolute configurations of the chromophores. The report expands the range of known pyrrole-modified porphyrins. Beyond this, it introduces large chiral porphyrinoid Ï-systems that exist in the form of two enantiomeric, stereochemically stable helimers that can be resolved. This forms the basis for possible future applications, for example, in molecular-recognition systems or in materials with chiroptic properties. © 2011 American Chemical Society

Bringing high-grade arteriovenous malformations under control: clinical outcomes following multimodality treatment in children.
OBJECTIVE:Brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) consist of dysplastic blood vessels with direct arteriovenous shunts that can hemorrhage spontaneously. In children, a higher lifetime hemorrhage risk must be balanced with treatment-related morbidity. The authors describe a collaborative, multimodal strategy resulting in effective and safe treatment of pediatric AVMs. METHODS:A retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database was performed in children with treated and nontreated pediatric AVMs at the University of California, San Francisco, from 1998 to 2017. Inclusion criteria were age †18 years at time of diagnosis and an AVM confirmed by a catheter angiogram. RESULTS:The authors evaluated 189 pediatric patients with AVMs over the study period, including 119 ruptured (63%) and 70 unruptured (37%) AVMs. The mean age at diagnosis was 11.6 ± 4.3 years. With respect to Spetzler-Martin (SM) grade, there were 38 (20.1%) grade I, 40 (21.2%) grade II, 62 (32.8%) grade III, 40 (21.2%) grade IV, and 9 (4.8%) grade V lesions. Six patients were managed conservatively, and 183 patients underwent treatment, including 120 resections, 82 stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), and 37 endovascular embolizations. Forty-four of 49 (89.8%) high-grade AVMs (SM grade IV or V) were treated. Multiple treatment modalities were used in 29.5% of low-grade and 27.3% of high-grade AVMs. Complete angiographic obliteration was obtained in 73.4% of low-grade lesions (SM grade I-III) and in 45.2% of high-grade lesions. A periprocedural stroke occurred in a single patient (0.5%), and there was 1 treatment-related death. The mean clinical follow-up for the cohort was 4.1 ± 4.6 years, and 96.6% and 84.3% of patients neurologically improved or remained unchanged in the ruptured and unruptured AVM groups following treatment, respectively. There were 16 bleeding events following initiation of AVM treatment (annual rate: 0.02 events per person-year). CONCLUSIONS:Coordinated multidisciplinary evaluation and individualized planning can result in safe and effective treatment of children with AVMs. In particular, it is possible to treat the majority of high-grade AVMs with an acceptable safety profile. Judicious use of multimodality therapy should be limited to appropriately selected patients after thorough team-based discussions to avoid additive morbidity. Future multicenter studies are required to better design predictive models to aid with patient selection for multimodal pediatric care, especially with high-grade AVMs
500 Days of SN 2013dy: spectra and photometry from the ultraviolet to the infrared
SN 2013dy is a Type Ia supernova for which we have compiled an extraordinary
dataset spanning from 0.1 to ~ 500 days after explosion. We present 10 epochs
of ultraviolet (UV) through near-infrared (NIR) spectra with HST/STIS, 47
epochs of optical spectra (15 of them having high resolution), and more than
500 photometric observations in the BVrRiIZYJH bands. SN 2013dy has a broad and
slowly declining light curve (delta m(B) = 0.92 mag), shallow Si II 6355
absorption, and a low velocity gradient. We detect strong C II in our earliest
spectra, probing unburned progenitor material in the outermost layers of the SN
ejecta, but this feature fades within a few days. The UV continuum of SN
2013dy, which is strongly affected by the metal abundance of the progenitor
star, suggests that SN 2013dy had a relatively high-metallicity progenitor.
Examining one of the largest single set of high-resolution spectra for a SN Ia,
we find no evidence of variable absorption from circumstellar material.
Combining our UV spectra, NIR photometry, and high-cadence optical photometry,
we construct a bolometric light curve, showing that SN 2013dy had a maximum
luminosity of 10.0^{+4.8}_{-3.8} * 10^{42} erg/s. We compare the synthetic
light curves and spectra of several models to SN 2013dy, finding that SN 2013dy
is in good agreement with a solar-metallicity W7 model.Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures, replaced with version accecpted for publication

Partnership, ownership and control: the impact of corporate governance on employment relations
Prevailing patterns of dispersed share ownership and rules of corporate governance for UK listed companies appear to constrain the ability of managers to make credible, long-term commitments to employees of the kind needed to foster effective labour-management partnerships. We present case study evidence which suggests that such partnerships can nevertheless emerge where product market conditions and the regulatory environment favour a stakeholder orientation. Proactive and mature partnerships may also be sustained where the board takes a strategic approach to mediating between the claims of different stakeholder groups, institutional investors are prepared to take a long-term view of their holdings, and strong and independent trade unions are in a position to facilitate organisational change

CHERI Concentrate: Practical Compressed Capabilities
We present CHERI Concentrate, a new fat-pointer compression scheme applied to CHERI, the most developed capability-pointer system at present. Capability fat-pointers are a primary candidate for enforcing fine-grained and non-bypassable security properties in future computer systems, although increased pointer size can severely affect performance. Thus, several proposals for capability compression have been suggested but these did not support legacy instruction sets, ignored features critical to the existing software base, and also introduced design inefficiencies to RISC-style processor pipelines. CHERI Concentrate improves on the state-of-the-art region-encoding efficiency, solves important pipeline problems, and eases semantic restrictions of compressed encoding, allowing it to protect a full legacy software stack. We analyze and extend logic from the open-source CHERI prototype processor design on FPGA to demonstrate encoding efficiency, minimize delay of pointer arithmetic, and eliminate additional load-to-use delay. To verify correctness of our proposed high-performance logic, we present a HOL4 machine-checked proof of the decode and pointer-modify operations. Finally, we measure a 50%-75% reduction in L2 misses for many compiled C-language benchmarks running under a commodity operating system using compressed 128-bit and 64-bit formats, demonstrating both compatibility with and increased performance over the uncompressed, 256-bit format
Charged Particle Pseudorapidity Distributions in Au+Al, Cu, Au, and U Collisions at 10.8 AGeV/c
We present the results of an analysis of charged particle pseudorapidity
distributions in the central region in collisions of a Au projectile with Al,
Cu, Au, and U targets at an incident energy of 10.8~GeV/c per nucleon. The
pseudorapidity distributions are presented as a function of transverse energy
produced in the target or central pseudorapidity regions. The correlation
between charged multiplicity and transverse energy measured in the central
region, as well as the target and projectile regions is also presented. We give
results for transverse energy per charged particle as a function of

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: The polarization-sensitive ACTPol instrument
The Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) is designed to make high angular
resolution measurements of anisotropies in the Cosmic Microwave Background
(CMB) at millimeter wavelengths. We describe ACTPol, an upgraded receiver for
ACT, which uses feedhorn-coupled, polarization-sensitive detector arrays, a 3
degree field of view, 100 mK cryogenics with continuous cooling, and meta
material anti-reflection coatings. ACTPol comprises three arrays with separate
cryogenic optics: two arrays at a central frequency of 148 GHz and one array
operating simultaneously at both 97 GHz and 148 GHz. The combined instrument
sensitivity, angular resolution, and sky coverage are optimized for measuring
angular power spectra, clusters via the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich and kinetic
Sunyaev-Zel'dovich signals, and CMB lensing due to large scale structure. The
receiver was commissioned with its first 148 GHz array in 2013, observed with
both 148 GHz arrays in 2014, and has recently completed its first full season
of operations with the full suite of three arrays. This paper provides an

Designing a physical activity parenting course : parental views on recruitment, content and delivery
Background
Many children do not engage in sufficient levels of physical activity (PA) and spend too much time screen-viewing (SV). High levels of SV (e.g. watching TV, playing video games and surfing the internet) and low levels of PA have been associated with adverse health outcomes. Parenting courses may hold promise as an intervention medium to change childrenâs PA and SV. The current study was formative work conducted to design a new parenting programme to increase childrenâs PA and reduce their SV. Specifically, we focussed on interest in a course, desired content and delivery style, barriers and facilitators to participation and opinions on control group provision.
Methods
In-depth telephone interviews were conducted with thirty two parents (29 female) of 6â8âyear olds. Data were analysed thematically. An anonymous online survey was also completed by 750 parents of 6â8âyear old children and descriptive statistics calculated.
Results
Interview participants were interested in a parenting course because they wanted general parenting advice and ideas to help their children be physically active. Parents indicated that they would benefit from knowing how to quantify their childâs PA and SV levels. Parents wanted practical ideas of alternatives to SV. Most parents would be unable to attend unless childcare was provided. Schools were perceived to be a trusted source of information about parenting courses and the optimal recruitment location. In terms of delivery style, the majority of parents stated they would prefer a group-based approach that provided opportunities for peer learning and support with professional input. Survey participants reported the timing of classes and the provision of childcare were essential factors that would affect participation. In terms of designing an intervention, the most preferred control group option was the opportunity to attend the same course at a later date.
Conclusions
Parents are interested in PA/SV parenting courses but the provision of child care is essential for attendance. Recruitment is likely to be facilitated via trusted sources. Parents want practical advice on how to overcome barriers and suggest advice is provided in a mutually supportive group experience with expert input
The BrainMap strategy for standardization, sharing, and meta-analysis of neuroimaging data
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Neuroimaging researchers have developed rigorous community data and metadata standards that encourage meta-analysis as a method for establishing robust and meaningful convergence of knowledge of human brain structure and function. Capitalizing on these standards, the BrainMap project offers databases, software applications, and other associated tools for supporting and promoting quantitative coordinate-based meta-analysis of the structural and functional neuroimaging literature.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>In this report, we describe recent technical updates to the project and provide an educational description for performing meta-analyses in the BrainMap environment.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The BrainMap project will continue to evolve in response to the meta-analytic needs of biomedical researchers in the structural and functional neuroimaging communities. Future work on the BrainMap project regarding software and hardware advances are also discussed.</p
