    Family influence in Maltese listed companies : the implications on corporate governance

    The Maltese market is and has always been, dominated by Family Businesses (FB) to the extent that such entities are vital to the resilience of our economy. There tends to be the presupposition that as soon as FBs convert to a public listing, they start implementing rational governance mechanisms, contrasting with the "non-rational behaviour" which is normally associated with the dynamics of running an FB. With this study the authors focus on equity-listed Maltese companies on the Malta Stock Exchange (MSE) and aim to build an understanding on the current situation of such entities’ GC structures to possibly conclude on whether Maltese LFBs are taking the initiative to apply appropriate governance measures which meet their strategic needs, even though there are no obligatory regulations or recommendations on the matter. Moreover, they will shed light on (i) the characteristics of LFBs; (ii) the family governance structures (‘FGS’) in such companies including the role of family institutions as well as the family influence on executive appointments and top positions; and (iii) recommend regulatory and other improvements. Authors carried out semi-structured with 18 participants in charge of corporate governance in Maltese listed companies (MLCs) and conclude that Maltese LFBs do not as yet acknowledge the significance of their distinctive features and the implications of such features on their CG structures. As a result, the application of specific structures related to FBs, in particular, the family constitution and the family institutions are as yet not to be found.peer-reviewe

    High temperature superconductivity in sulfur hydride under ultrahigh pressure: A complex superconducting phase beyond conventional BCS

    The recent report of superconductivity under high pressure at the record transition temperature of Tc=203K in sulfur hydride has been identified as conventional in view of the observation of an isotope effect upon deuteration. Here it is demonstrated that conventional theories of superconductivity in the sense of BCS or Eliashberg formalisms can neither account for the observed values of Tc nor the pressure dependence of the isotope coefficient. The only way out of the dilemma is a multi-band approach of superconductivity where already small interband coupling suffices to achieve the high values of Tc together with the anomalous pressure dependent isotope effect. In addition, it is shown that anharmonicity of the hydrogen bonds vanishes under pressure whereas anharmonic phonon modes related to sulfur are still activeComment: 11 pages, 5 figure

    Exploring factors related to the translation of collaborative research learning experiences into clinical practice : opportunities and tensions

    Providing training opportunities to develop research skills for clinical staff has been prioritised in response to the need for improving the evidence base underpinning the delivery of care. By exploring the experiences of a number of former participants of a multidisciplinary postgraduate research course, this article explores the factors that have enabled and impeded staff to translate their learnt research skills into clinical practice. Adopting an exploratory case study approach, 16 interviews with 5 cohorts of Masters by Research in Clinical Practice (MResCP) graduates were undertaken. The interviews explored graduates’ course experiences and their subsequent attempts to undertake clinical research. Analysis of the data indicated that although participants valued their interactions with colleagues from different professions and felt they gained useful research skills/knowledge, upon returning to clinical practice, they encountered a number of barriers which restricted their ability to apply their research expertise. Professional isolation, issues of hierarchy, and a lack of organisational support were key to limiting their ability to undertake clinical research. Further work is needed to explore in more depth how (i) these barriers can be overcome and (ii) how taught collaborative research skills can be more effectively translated into practice

    Evaluation Of Pilgrims Hospices Rapid Response Hospice At Home Service: Summary of findings March 2015

    When faced with a life-limiting illness, most people say they would prefer to spend the end of their lives and die at home. However, we know that about half the people with cancer or long-term illnesses still die in hospital. Fewer than a quarter die in their own home. Patients are often admitted to hospital because of a crisis such as uncontrolled symptoms, carer fear or stress, or not having medication available when needed. Community based palliative care teams can help in such situations. In 2008 Pilgrims Hospices commissioned a review of the literature to understand what kinds of home care services provide the most benefit to patients at the end of their lives and their families. Though good quality evidence was scarce, the findings of the review suggested that successful services are able to respond rapidly, focus on supporting family carers at home and are available 24 hours a day seven days a week. Following these conclusions, Pilgrims Hospices developed the Rapid Response Hospice at Home service (Hospice at Home) to support people who are at the end of life and would like to die at home. The Hospice at Home service operates in addition to established hospice community services and is staffed by healthcare assistants (HCAs) who have been trained at the hospice. The HCAs are available day and night at four hours' notice to support patients in the last days of their lives or when they experience a crisis

    The Headgroup (A)Symmetry Strongly Determines the Aggregation Behavior of Single-Chain Phenylene-Modified Bolalipids and Their Miscibility with Classical Phospholipids

    In the present work, we describe the synthesis of two single-chain phenylene-modified bolalipids, namely PC-C17pPhC17-PC and PC-C17pPhC17-OH, with either symmetrical (phosphocholine) or asymmetrical (phosphocholine and hydroxyl) headgroups using a Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction as key step. The temperature-dependent aggregation behavior of both bolalipids in aqueous suspension was studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, small angle neutron scattering (SANS), and X-ray scattering. We show that different headgroup symmetries lead to a change in the aggregation behavior: Whereas PC-C17pPhC17-PC forms nanofibers with a diameter of 5.7 nm that transform into small ellipsoidal micelles at 23 °C, the PC-C17pPhC17-OH self-assembles into lamellae with bolalipid molecules in an antiparallel orientation up to high temperatures. Furthermore, the mixing behavior of both bolalipids with bilayer-forming phospholipids (DPPC and DSPC) was studied by means of DSC and TEM. The aim was to stabilize bilayer membranes formed of phospholipids in order to improve these mixed lipid vesicles for drug delivery purposes. We show that the symmetrical PC-C17pPhC17-PC is miscible with DPPC and DSPC; however, closed lipid vesicles are not observed, and elongated micelles and bilayer fragments are found instead. In contrast, the asymmetrical PC-C17pPhC17-OH shows no miscibility with phospholipids at all

    Memantine Improves Attentional Processes in Fragile X-Associated Tremor/Ataxia Syndrome: Electrophysiological Evidence from a Randomized Controlled Trial.

    Progressive cognitive deficits are common in patients with fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS), with no targeted treatment yet established. In this substudy of the first randomized controlled trial for FXTAS, we examined the effects of NMDA antagonist memantine on attention and working memory. Data were analyzed for patients (24 in each arm) who completed both the primary memantine trial and two EEG recordings (at baseline and follow-up) using an auditory "oddball" task. Results demonstrated significantly improved attention/working memory performance after one year only for the memantine group. The event-related potential P2 amplitude elicited by non-targets was significantly enhanced in the treated group, indicating memantine-associated improvement in attentional processes at the stimulus identification/discrimination level. P2 amplitude increase was positively correlated with improvement on the behavioral measure of attention/working memory during target detection. Analysis also revealed that memantine treatment normalized the P2 habituation effect at the follow-up visit. These findings indicate that memantine may benefit attentional processes that represent fundamental components of executive function/dysfunction, thought to comprise the core cognitive deficit in FXTAS. The results provide evidence of target engagement of memantine, as well as therapeutically relevant information that could further the development of specific cognitive or disease-modifying therapies for FXTAS
