    Detection and molecular characterisation of Cryptosporidium parvum in British European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus)

    Surveillance was conducted for the occurrence of protozoan parasites of the genus Cryptosporidium in European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) in Great Britain. In total, 108 voided faecal samples were collected from hedgehogs newly admitted to eight wildlife casualty treatment and rehabilitation centres. Terminal large intestinal (LI) contents from three hedgehog carcasses were also analysed. Information on host and location variables, including faecal appearance, body weight, and apparent health status, was compiled. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) targeting the 18S ribosomal RNA gene, confirmed by sequencing, revealed an 8% (9/111) occurrence of Cryptosporidium parvum in faeces or LI contents, with no significant association between the host or location variables and infection. Archived small intestinal (SI) tissue from a hedgehog with histological evidence of cryptosporidiosis was also positive for C. parvum by PCR and sequence analysis of the 18S rRNA gene. No other Cryptosporidium species were detected. PCR and sequencing of the glycoprotein 60 gene identified three known zoonotic C. parvum subtypes not previously found in hedgehogs: IIdA17G1 (n=4), IIdA19G1 (n=1) and IIdA24G1 (n=1). These subtypes are also known to infect livestock. Another faecal sample contained C. parvum IIcA5G3j which has been found previously in hedgehogs, and for which there is one published report in a human, but is not known to affect livestock. The presence of zoonotic subtypes of C. parvum in British hedgehogs highlights a potential public health concern. Further research is needed to better understand the epidemiology and potential impacts of Cryptosporidium infection in hedgehogs

    Advances in prevention and therapy of neonatal dairy calf diarrhoea : a systematical review with emphasis on colostrum management and fluid therapy

    Neonatal calf diarrhoea remains the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in preweaned dairy calves worldwide. This complex disease can be triggered by both infectious and non-infectious causes. The four most important enteropathogens leading to neonatal dairy calf diarrhoea are Escherichia coli, rota-and coronavirus, and Cryptosporidium parvum. Besides treating diarrhoeic neonatal dairy calves, the veterinarian is the most obvious person to advise the dairy farmer on prevention and treatment of this disease. This review deals with prevention and treatment of neonatal dairy calf diarrhoea focusing on the importance of a good colostrum management and a correct fluid therapy

    Calfhood diseases have a major impact on the economic viability of cattle operations. The second of this three part review series considers the management of diarrhoeic diseases in pre-weaned calves. In neonatal calf diarrhoea, oral rehydration therapy is the single most important therapeutic measure to be carried out by the farmer and is usually successful if instigated immediately after diarrhoea has developed. Continued feeding of milk or milk replacer to diarrhoeic calves is important, to prevent malnourishment and weight loss in affected calves. Indiscriminative antibiotic treatment of uncomplicated diarrhoea is discouraged, whereas systemically ill calves can benefit from systemic antibiotic treatment for the prevention of septicaemia or concurrent diseases. Ancillary treatments and specific preventive measures are discussed. Eimeriosis has a high economic impact on the farming industries due to direct cost of treatment and calf losses, but especially due to decreased performance of clinically as well as sub-clinically affected animals. Emphasis lies on prophylactic or metaphylactic treatment, since the degree of damage to the intestinal mucosa once diarrhoea has developed, makes therapeutic intervention unrewarding

    Bovine cryptosporidiosis: impact, host-parasite interaction and control strategies

    International audienceAbstractGastrointestinal disease caused by the apicomplexan parasite Cryptosporidium parvum is one of the most important diseases of young ruminant livestock, particularly neonatal calves. Infected animals may suffer from profuse watery diarrhoea, dehydration and in severe cases death can occur. At present, effective therapeutic and preventative measures are not available and a better understanding of the host–pathogen interactions is required. Cryptosporidium parvum is also an important zoonotic pathogen causing severe disease in people, with young children being particularly vulnerable. Our knowledge of the immune responses induced by Cryptosporidium parasites in clinically relevant hosts is very limited. This review discusses the impact of bovine cryptosporidiosis and describes how a thorough understanding of the host–pathogen interactions may help to identify novel prevention and control strategies

    Cryptosporidium infection in dairy cattle

    For almost 25 years, it has been known that Cryptosporidium parasites infect Swedish calves. This thesis explores how common these parasites are at herd level and at individual level in preweaned calves, young stock and periparturient cows. Species distribution and association with diarrhoeal problems are also highlighted. Two field studies were performed and in addition, existing clinical or cohort studies on the cryptosporidiostatic substance halofuginone were examined. Cryptosporidium oocyst shedders were detected in 68 of 69 investigated herds. Calves had the highest prevalences followed by young stock and cows. The four common species in cattle, C. parvum, C. bovis, C. ryanae and C. andersoni, were all detected. Cryptosporidium bovis was most common in all age groups with an overall 77% prevalence, and the prepatent period was shown to be at least three days shorter than previously described. Overall, Cryptosporidium infection was not associated with disease in calves, but a higher percentage of calves infected with C. parvum had diarrhoea compared to calves infected with C. bovis. Nine different C. parvum subtypes were identified, of which three were novel. All subtypes belonged to the zoonotic subtype families iia and iid. Several management factors were associated with shedding of oocysts. One management factor, 'disinfection of single pens', was associated with diarrhoeal problems at herd level, but several more management differences were indicated although they could not be shown statistically. Halofuginone had some beneficial effects on infection and diarrhoeal prevalences when used for prophylaxis, but mortality was not affected. Cryptosporidium parasites were widely spread in the Swedish dairy cattle population, but because most animals were not infected with the zoonotic C. parvum, the potential for zoonotic transfer is fairly low. Management routines are important to decrease infection pressure and prevent infected calves from clinical disease. Halofuginone should be used with great care in a transition period when management routines are changed to improve calf health
