    Get PDF
We present results of the application of the Schwinger multichannel method to study the role of Feshbach resonances on the elastic and electronic excitation cross sections in e-H_2 collisions. Using a ^2ÎŁ_g^+2 resonance associated with the a ^3ÎŁ^+_g and E^1ÎŁ^+_g states of H_2 as an example, we quantitatively illustrate the dramatic influence of open channels on the decay of such Feshbach resonances in electron-molecule collisions

Adsorptive potential of Zn–Al and Mg–Fe layered double hydroxides for the removal of 2–nitrophenol from aqueous solutions

    Get PDF
Two layered double hydroxides (LDH) of the type Zn–Al and Mg–Fe were synthesized, characterized and used as adsorbents to uptake 2–nitrophenol (2–NP) from aqueous solutions. XRD, FTIR, SEM, EDS, AFM and N2 adsorption/desorption curves were used to characterize the Zn–Al–LDH and Mg–Fe–LDH. The potential of both layered double hydroxides to adsorb 2–NP was investigated by adsorption kinetics, equilibrium, thermodynamics and consecutive adsorption/desorption cycles. The characterization indicated a high crystallinity degree and a well–organized and lamellar structure, confirming the efficiency of the synthesis. Elovich was the better kinetic model to describe the 2–NP adsorption onto Zn–Al–LDH, while Pseudo–second order was the best for Mg–Fe–LDH. For both LDHs, the adsorption equilibrium followed the Freundlich model. The process was endothermic, being the maximum adsorption capacities of 290 and 165 mg g–1 for Zn–Al–LDH and Mg–Fe–LDH, respectively. LDHs can be applied for five adsorption/desorption cycles with excellent adsorption capacities. It can be concluded that Zn–Al–LDH and Mg–Fe–LDH are promising materials to treat waters and wastewaters containing 2–nitropheno

Characterization of Fuji Apples from Different Harvest Dates and Storage Conditions from Measurements of Volatiles by Gas Chromatography and Electronic Nose

Volatile compounds in Fuji apples harvested at two different maturities were measured at harvest and after 5 and 7 months of cold storage (1 °C) in four different atmospheres. When the samples were characterized by both chromatographic measurements of volatiles and responses of an electronic nose, the analyses showed a clear separation between fruits from different storage conditions (a normal cold atmosphere and three controlled atmospheres). During poststorage, the apples were left to ripen for 1, 5, and 10 days at 20 °C before analytical measurements were done involving headspace-gas chromatography methods and electronic nose type quartz crystal microbalances. Electronic nose responses registered by seven different sensors were used to classify the apples using principal component analysis. It was possible to identify the samples from different storage periods, days of shelf life, and harvest dates, but it was not possible to differentiate the fruits corresponding to different cold storage atmospheres

Applications of the Schwinger multichannel method to electron-molecule collisions

    Get PDF
We discuss some recent developments in the implementation of the Schwinger multichannel method for electron-molecule collision calculations. The evaluation of matrix elements involving the operator VG^(+)_PV, previously accomplished by insertion of a Gaussian basis on either side of G^(+)_P, is now done by direct numerical quadrature. This approach avoids the necessity of very large Gaussian basis sets, allowing the size of the basis to reflect only the dynamical requirements of the scattering wave function. We find that the reduction in the required basis size results in improved efficiency, in spite of the additional numerical effort of performing the quadrature. Trial applications to electron-CH4 scattering in the static-exchange approximation and to electronic excitation of H_2 illustrate the excellent convergence characteristics of the procedure

Exploring phenotypic plasticity leaf trait relationships in fungal-resistant grapevines using linear regression: Implications of the genotype environment interaction

    Get PDF
Accurate and non-destructive models for predicting leaf area (LA) are essential for monitoring vineyard growth and developing automated algorithms. In this study, we developed and compared the performance of eight linear regression models for predicting LA in eleven fungal-resistant grapevine genotypes. We also explored the phenotypic plasticity of leaf traits and their relationship with LA using kernel density estimation analysis. We found that genotype played a major role in defining leaf shape, and genotype-environment interaction was observed. The best models for LA estimation were identified for each genotype, and a leaf deformation index was proposed. Our results provide accurate and robust models for estimating LA in fungal-resistant grapevine genotypes and demonstrate the relationship between leaf traits and the environment. Additionally, we present a method for defining leaf asymmetry. Overall, this study contributes to the development of non-destructive and automated techniques for monitoring vineyard growth

Species of the genus Alpinia are widely used by the population and have many described biological activities, including activity against insects. In this paper, we describe the bioactivity of the essential oil of two species of Alpinia genus, A. zerumbet and A. vittata, against Rhodnius nasutus, a vector of Chagas disease. The essential oils of these two species were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC-MS. The main constituent of A. zerumbet essential oil (OLALPZER) was terpinen-4-ol, which represented 19.7% of the total components identified. In the essential oil of A. vittata (OLALPVIT) the monoterpene ÎČ-pinene (35.3%) was the main constituent. The essential oils and their main constituents were topically applied on R. nasutus fifth-instar nymphs. In the first 10 min of application, OLALPVIT and OLALPZER at 125 Όg/mL provoked 73.3% and 83.3% of mortality, respectively. Terpinen-4-ol at 25 Όg/mL and ÎČ-pinene at 44 Όg/mL provoked 100% of mortality. The monitoring of resistant insects showed that both essential oils exhibited antifeedant activity. These results suggest the potential use of A. zerumbet and A. vittata essential oils and their major constituents to control R. nasutus population
