Intensification of influenza virus production in fed-batch and perfusion cultures of HEK293SF cells

More than half a million people die every year from complications of seasonal influenza, and vaccination stands as the most effective method to prevent and limit outbreaks of the disease. Constant vaccine development based on emerging strains and worldwide distribution of vaccines is a great challenge for public health and vaccine manufacturers, particularly in a potential pandemic scenario. The limited flexibility of the current egg-based production system combined with recent advances in large-scale cell culture techniques have encouraged the development of cell culture processes for influenza vaccine production. While cell culture offers a valuable alternative, productivities are still low when compared to traditional egg-based systems, requiring extensive efforts in process intensification and suspension cell line development. Gender differences in HIV-related sexual behavior among college students from Spain and Portugal

Under the perspective of the Theory of Planned Behavior, the objective of this study was to know the gender differences in the variables involved in the use of effective preventive measures in sexual relations against HIV in a sample of university students from Spain and Portugal. Furthermore, it is examined whether these factors produce different predictions concerning the adoption of safe sexual behaviour for young man and women in each country. The sample consisted of 683 university students, 319 Portuguese (64% female and 36% male) from the University of Algarve and 364 Spanish students (51% female and 49% male) from the University of Huelva. Data were obtained by means of a questionnaire. The data revealed that there are gender differences which apply in both countries, highlighting that the young women have more positive attitudes, greater perceived behavioural control and intention of condom use than young men. However, they protect themselves less that their male counterparts: the percentage of females who say using condoms as a contraceptive method is less than the percentage of males, and especially with their steady partners. The results are discussed in relation to gender role norms, to have a steady partner or not, gender relations, the associated meaning to sexual relations for men and women and their implications for the design of sexual educational programmes for them

Greenhouse Energy Consumption for Tomato Production in the Iberian Peninsula Countries

Greenhouse climate models are a powerful tool which allows the simulation of inside environmental conditions as a function of external conditions, construction and environmental control equipments characteristics. They also permit to evaluate the energy consumption necessary to obtain the predefined conditions. A theoretical study of the greenhouse energy requirements for all year round tomato production in Portugal and Spain is presented. A Greenhouse Climate Simulator (GCS) was used to analyse the energetic behaviour in different regions. GCS uses mensal mean weather data of several years of solar radiation, temperature, wind speed and relative humidity. A climate generator computes the mean hourly climatic data of a typical day for each month and location. As inputs GCS requires data related with the greenhouse characteristics, environmental control equipment and the crop. For the energy balance a static complex model is used which is based on the physics of heat and mass transfer. The results show the energy consumption due to the heating system in each of the studied locations, as well the heat dissipated by the cooling system along a characteristic year, for year round production in plastic greenhouses. This is used to estimate energy consumption indicators which allow generating predictive maps. It is an interesting tool which may contribute to the grower’s decision making and to the reduction of energy consumption, helping to lower production costs and environmental impacts

Precipitation reaction in alpha-Cu-Al-Ag alloys

The Ag-rich precipitates formation reaction in the Cu-9.22%at. Al-4.66%at. Ag, Cu-9.31%at. Al-5.83%at. Ag and Cu-9.37%at. Al-7.08%at. Ag alloys was studied using microhardness change measurements with temperature and time, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). Effect Of Virtual Therapy On Upper Limb Motor Rehabilitation Of Children With Hemiparesis [efeito Da Terapia Virtual Na Reabilitação Motora Do Membro Superior De Crianças Hemiparéticas]

Objective. This study aimed to investigate the effect of virtual therapy on the motor ability of hemiparetic children's upper limb. Method. The sample consisted of three hemiparetic children (8.66±2.30 years). The Pediatric Evaluation of Disability of Inventory (PEDI) and Motor Activity Inventory (MAL) were used for initial and final assessments and the number of hits in each game was counted as well. For the treatment, a hardware (video game) was used, Nintendo brand, model Wii Sports software, using the games (tennis, baseball, golf, boxing). During a period of two weeks, the therapy lasted for 1 hour and 10 minutes each day, consecutively. Results. There was statistical difference in two children in the PEDI (p=0,00) and in the MAL, related to the quality of the upper limb's use (p=0,00) where as relation to the frequency of use, there was statistical difference in all three children in all four games had a increase. Conclusion. An Illustrative Case Of Léri-weill Dyschondrosteosis

We report on a girl presenting Léri-Weill dyschondrosteosis (LWD) due to deletion of the SHOX gene. Her family included individuals with short stature alone or with both short stature and mesomelia or Madelung's deformity. The deletion was demonstrated through detection of hemizygosity for microsatellite markdrs SHOX-CA repeat, DXYS10092, DXYS10093 and DXYS10091 localized around the SHOX gene, with retention of paternal alleles in the proband and three of her sisters who had short stature as the only clinical feature. Hemizygosity for these loci was also observed in their mother, who had short stature too. The deletion in the proband was however larger, including locus DXY 10083. The proband's only sister with normal height did not carry the deletion. Family history suggests transmission of the deletion from the proband's maternal great-grandfather to her grandfather via the Y chromosome, and from the grandfather to the proband's mother via the X chromosome after crossing-over in the pseudoautosomal region proximal to the SHOX gene. Kinetic resolution of (R,S)-1,2-isopropylidene glycerol (solketal) ester derivatives by lipases

AbstractA study on the enantioselective hydrolysis of (R,S)-1,2-isopropylidene glycerol (4-hydroxymethyl-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane, solketal) octanoate catalyzed by different lipases was carried out. Among them, Pseudomonas sp. lipase proved to be the most effective. It was shown that the ester bearing the longer octanoyl acyl chain is a more suitable substrate for this lipase compared to the acetate counterpart. By properly combining enzyme load, temperature and reaction time, either the (S)-alcohol or the remaining ester could be obtained in moderate to high selectivities. Ethyl acetate was found to be the best solvent for the kinetic resolutions effected by such lipase but our results show that toluene may prove useful

Lanthanide-based organic salts: Synthesis, characterization, and cytotoxicity studies

In this work, a set of choline-family-based salts, and two other, different cation families, were combined with Gadolinium(III) and Terbium(III) anions. Synthetic methodologies were previously optimized, and all organic salts were obtained as solids with melting temperatures higher than 100 °C. The magnetic moments obtained for the Gd(III) salts were, as expected, smaller than those obtained for the Tb(III)-based compounds. The values for Gd(III) and Tb(III) magnetic salts are in the range of 6.55–7.30 MB and 8.22–9.34 MB, respectively. It is important to note a correlation between the magnetic moments obtained for lanthanides, and the structural features of the cation. The cytotoxicity of lanthanide-based salts was also evaluated using 3T3, 293T, Caco2, and HepG2 cells, and it was revealed that most of the prepared compounds are not toxic.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
