    Get PDF
Vehicular networks experience a number of unique challenges due to the high mobility of vehicles and highly dynamic network topology, short contact durations, disruption intermittent connectivity, significant loss rates, node density, and frequent network fragmentation. All these issues have a profound impact on routing strategies in these networks. This paper gives an insight about available solutions on related literature for vehicular communications. It overviews and compares the most relevant approaches for data communication in these networks, discussing their influence on routing strategies. It intends to stimulate research and contribute to further advances in this rapidly evolving area where many key open issues that still remain to be addressed are identified.Part of this work has been supported by the Instituto de Telecomunicações, Next Generation Networks and Applications Group (NetGNA), Portugal, in the framework of the Project VDTN@Lab, and by the Euro-NF Network of Excellence of the Seventh Framework Programme of EU, in the framework of the Specific Joint Research Project VDTN

Development of dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide/monoolein liposomes for gene delivery

The artificial introduction of nucleic acids (NA) into mammalian cells (transfection) has become, in recent years, a well-established procedure in basic and applied research, which allowed the study of gene function and regulation. The advances in this area have made possible the use of these methods for gene-based medicines, which constitute alternative therapeutic approaches. One of the most prominent methods is lipofection that uses cationic liposome/NA complexes (a.k.a. lipoplexes) for the complexation, transport and release of therapeutic sequences into target cells. Although yielding lower transfection efficiencies compared with viral gene delivery, lipofection vectors are much safer for medical applications because no significant mutational or toxicological risk exist. Dioctadecyldimethylammonium Bromide (DODAB)/Monoolein (MO) liposomes have recently been described as a new promising alternative to common transfection reagents, due to the pioneering application of MO as helper lipid in lipoplex formulations. In this chapter, we will review the effect of MO on the physicochemical properties of DODAB/MO liposomes and pDNA/DODAB/MO lipoplexes. How lipoplex properties may affect the interaction with different extracellular components and their cell uptake and trafficking will be discussed. The importance of lipoplex biocompatibility towards efficient gene therapy will also be approached presenting pDNA/DODAB/MO system as a lipoplex model, supporting the use of MO as new helper lipid in lipofection.FCTCOMPETEThis work was supported by FCT research project PTDC/QUI/69795/2006, which is cofunded by the program COMPETE from QREN with co-participation from the European Community fund FEDER; CFUM [PEst-C/FIS/UI0607/2011]; CBMA [Pest C/BIA/UI4050/2011]; J.P.N. Preliminary Analysis of the Use of Construction Waste to Replace Conventional Aggregates in Concrete

This work aims to study the influence of using construction and demolition waste in the replacement of coarse and fine aggregate to produce recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). A moderate compressive strength concrete made with usual fine and coarse aggregate was used as a benchmark material. Compressive and split tensile tests were performed using 120 cylindrical concrete specimens with 150 mm diameter and 300 mm length. Four-point flexural tests in reinforced beams made with conventional concrete and RAC were performed. The results obtained showed that the use of recycled fine aggregates, in both percentages of substitution investigated-50% and 100%-did not generate any deleterious influence on the values of compressive strength and split tensile strength of the RACs produced. Tin fact, the mechanical strengths of RACs produced with recycled fine aggregate were equal or higher than those from the reference concrete. The same behavior was not observed, however, when the recycled coarse aggregate was used. For this case, decreases in concrete mechanical strengths were observed, especially in compressive strength, with values around 35% lower when compared to the reference concrete. Tensile mechanical tests results confirmed the excellent behavior of all RACs made with replacement of usual fine aggregates by recycled. Bending tests performed in reinforced RAC beams had as objective to evaluate the deformation profile of the beams. The obtained results showed that RAC beams with full replacement of usual fine aggregate by the recycled aggregates have presented little changes in the global behavior, an aspect that encourages its use

EEG-based person identification through binary flower pollination algorithm

Electroencephalogram (EEG) signal presents a great potential for highly secure biometric systems due to its characteristics of universality, uniqueness, and natural robustness to spoofing attacks. EEG signals are measured by sensors placed in various positions of a person’s head (channels). In this work, we address the problem of reducing the number of required sensors while maintaining a comparable performance. We evaluated a binary version of the Flower Pollination Algorithm under different transfer functions to select the best subset of channels that maximizes the accuracy, which is measured by means of the Optimum-Path Forest classifier. The experimental results show the proposed approach can make use of less than a half of the number of sensors while maintaining recognition rates up to 87%, which is crucial towards the effective use of EEG in biometric applications

DNA repair genes polymorphisms and genetic susceptibility to Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms in a Portuguese population: the role of base excision repair genes polymorphisms

Sob uma licença CC-BY-NC-ND - http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/The role of base excision repair (BER) genes in Philadelphia-negative (PN)-myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) susceptibility was evaluated by genotyping eight polymorphisms [apurinic/apyrimidinic endodeoxyribonuclease 1, mutY DNA glycosylase, earlier mutY homolog (E. coli) (MUTYH), 8‑oxoguanine DNA glycosylase 1, poly (ADP‑ribose) polymerase (PARP) 1, PARP4 and X‑ray repair cross‑complementing 1 (XRCC1)] in a case‑control study involving 133 Caucasian Portuguese patients. The results did not reveal a correlation between individual BER polymorphisms and PN‑MPNs when considered as a whole. However, stratification for essential thrombocythaemia revealed i) borderline effect/tendency to increased risk when carrying at least one variant allele for XRCC1_399 single‑nucleotide polymorphism (SNP); ii) decreased risk for Janus kinase 2‑positive patients carrying at least one variant allele for XRCC1_399 SNP; and iii) decreased risk in females carrying at least one variant allele for MUTYH SNP. Combination of alleles demonstrated an increased risk to PN‑MPNs for one specific haplogroup. These findings may provide evidence for gene variants in susceptibility to MPNs. Indeed, common variants in DNA repair genes may hamper the capacity to repair DNA, thus increasing cancer susceptibility.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Creation of a vehicular delay-tolerant network prototype

Vehicular Delay-Tolerant Network (VDTN) is a new disruptive network architecture where vehicles act as the communication infrastructure. VDTN follows a layered architecture based on control and data planes separation, and positioning the bundle layer under the network layer. VDTN furnishes low-cost asynchronous communications coping with intermittent and sparse connectivity, variable delays and even no end-to-end connection. This paper presents a VDTN prototype (testbed) proposal, which implements and validates the VDTN layered architecture considering the proposed out-of-band signaling. The main goals of the prototype are emulation, demonstration, performance evaluation, and diagnose of protocol stacks and services, proving the applicability of VDTNs over a wide range of environments.Part of this work has been supported by the Instituto de Telecomunicações, Next Generation Networks and Applications Group (NetGNA), Covilhã Delegation, Portugal in the framework of the VDTN@Lab Project, and by the Euro-NF Network of Excellence from the Seventh Framework Programme of EU

Qualitative Signals of New Physics in B-Bbar Mixing

It is expected that, within the next three years, the determination of the CKM matrix elements with the least theoretical uncertainty will arise from the measurements of CP violation in B_d --> J/\psi K_S decays and from Bs-Bsbar mixing. If there is significant new physics in Bs-Bsbar mixing, then those experiments will not yield the correct values for the CKM matrix elements. As a result, a qualitative signal of new physics may appear in the CP violation of decays like B_d --> pi+ pi-.Comment: 5 pages, RevTex with psfig, 1 figur

Comment on ``Neutrino masses and mixing angles in a predictive theory of fermion masses''

In the extension of the Dimopoulos--Hall--Raby model of the fermion mass matrices to the neutrino sector, there is an entry in the up-quark and neutrino Dirac mass matrices which can be assumed to arise from the Yukawa coupling of a {\bf 120}, instead of a {\bf 10} or a {\bf 126}, of SO(10). Although this assumption leads to an extra undetermined complex parameter in the model, the resulting lepton mixing matrix exhibits the remarkable feature that the ντ \nu_{\tau} does not mix with the other two neutrinos. Making a reasonable assumption about the extra parameter, we are able to fit the large-mixing-angle MSW solution of the solar-neutrino problem, and we obtain mντ∼10 m_{\nu_{\tau}} \sim 10 eV, the right mass range to close the Universe. Other possibilities for explaining the solar-neutrino deficit are also discussed.Comment: standard LATEX, 6 pages, 2 figures available from the authors, report No. CMU-HEP93-20 and DOE-ER/40682-4

Detecting New Physics from CP-violating phase measurements in B decays

    Get PDF
The standard CKM model can be tested and New Physics detected using only CP-violating phase measurements in B decays. This requires the measurement of a phase factor which is small in the Standard Model, in addition to the usual large phases β\beta and γ\gamma. We also point out that identifying violations of the unitarity of the CKM matrix is rather difficult, and cannot be done with phase measurements alone.Comment: 6 pages, Latex, no figure
