Through some examples, we intend to argue that the knowledge of geometry and, in particular, the knowledge of conic curves and their applications, may potentiate the project work of designers, reducing the costs of hardware and software in teaching and professional work, reducing also the need for sophisticated and expensive means, and its continuous updating, and the use of software which involves specialized training, and especially requiring long training periods. We want to contribute to the recognition of the importance of the study of these curves and surfaces generated by them, especially in the teaching of Geometry in Design courses. In fact, from the systematization of existing knowledge in other areas, such as architecture and engineering, developing the adaptation of properties of conic curves and also the knowledge of areas such as analytic or projective geometry to the geometric design and contributing by suggesting new ways to draw the curves, we can develop the ability of designers and design students to solve problems in the context of the project, and others such as technical representation and external communication with non-experts

Prof. Ernest Wenkert's connections with Brazil on this side of the Atlantic Ocean involved two important links: Profs. Jayr de Paiva Campello and Otto R. Gottlieb. The former, along with Prof. Giuseppe Cilento, was one of those responsible for setting up the Institute of Chemistry of UNICAMP, while Otto Gottlieb was the great pioneer of Natural Products Chemistry in Brazil. The bridge between these two professors and Wenkert paved the way for several Brazilian chemists to visit the USA, and was also important for bringing some PhDs to Brazil

Specific warm-up exercise is the best for vertical countermovement jump in young volleyball players

    Get PDF
We evaluated the effect of performing various distinct warm-up exercises on vertical countermovement jump (VCMJ) performance. Eight volleyball players (age 15.4 ± 0.5 yrs) performed five different warm-up activities (in a counterbalanced, randomized crossover study) over five days, at 24-h intervals: stretching (4 × 30 s, 30 s between sets), cycloergometer (5 min at 50 W + 5 min at 100 W), resistance exercise (leg press 45°, 3 × 5 repetitions maximum, 3-min pause between sets), specific vertical jumping (4 × 10 VCMJ, 2-min pause between sets), and no warm-up at all (control condition). Beginning 3 min after their warm-up, the players performed 3 attempts (at intervals of 3 min) of VCMJ (on a contact carpet), and each player's best jump was considered in the analysis. All warm-up activities presented higher VCMJ performance (p< 0.05) than the control condition, with the exception of stretching. Vertical jumping revealed a large effect size(0.8) than other interventions. We conclude that in practical terms, vertical jumps are the best warm-up exercise (when applied by itself) to acutely improve VCMJ performance in volleyball players, but that other exercises can make a complementary contribution.

Targeting the mitochondrial VDAC in hepatocellular carcinoma using a polyclonal antibody-conjugated to a nitrosyl ruthenium complex

The rational design of anti-cancer agents includes a new approach based on ruthenium complexes that can act as nitric oxide (NO) donor agents against specific cellular targets. One of the most studied classes of those compounds is based on bis(bipyridine) ruthenium fragment and its derivative species. In this work, we present the chemical and cytotoxicity properties against the liver hepatocellular carcinoma cell line HepG2 of cis-[RuII(NO+)Cl(dcbpy)2]2− conjugated to a polyclonal antibody IgG (anti-VDAC) recognizing a cell surface marker. UV–visible bands of the ruthenium complex were assigned with the aid of density functional theory, which also allowed estimation of the structures that explain the biological effects of the ruthenium complex–IgG conjugate. The interaction of cis-[RuII(NO+)Cl(dcbpy)2]3− with mitochondria was evaluated due to the potential of these organelles as anti-cancer targets, and considering they interact with the anti-VDAC antibody. The cytotoxicity of cis-[RuII(NO+)Cl(dcbpy)2]3−-anti-VDAC antibody was up to 80% greater in comparison to the free cis-[RuII(NO+)Cl(dcbpy)2]3− complex. We suggest that this effect is due to site-specific interaction of the complex followed by NO release.Fil: Ramos, Loyanne C. B.. Universidade de Sao Paulo; BrasilFil: Rodrigues, Fernando P.. Efficiency of Phytoseiulus longipes Evans as a control agent of Tetranychus evansi Baker & Pritchard (Acari: Phytoseiidae: Tetranychidae) on screenhouse tomatoes

    Get PDF
The spider mite Tetranychus evansi Baker & Pritchard can cause severe damage to tomato crops. The predatory mite Phytoseiulus longipes Evans was recently reported in association with T. evansi in Uruguaiana, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of P. longipes on the population of T. evansi on tomatoes under screenhouse condition. The study consisted on four experiments, in each of which 80 potted plantlets were distributed in two plots of 40 plantlets each. Two weeks later, each plantlet of both plots was infested with eight adult females of T. evansi; one week after, four adult females of P. longipes were released onto each plant of one plot. The population levels of T. evansi and the damage caused by these mites were significantly lower (P < 0.05; linear mixed-effect model) in the plots where P. longipes had been released. The results indicate the potential of this predator as a candidate for classical biological control of T. evansi by inoculative releases on tomato plants.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Developmen
