Cycling to the University: Evaluating the potential mobility patterns changing towards bicycle usage

Policymakers at many universities are struggling to promote cycling in the local community in a way to recover campuses as a more livable and sustainable area, as well as decrease the current pollution emissions rate from students and staff commuting patterns. In such a context, providing and making bicycles accessible are considered promising initiatives to deliver such issues. However, the effectiveness regarding how such provision can establish a bicycle culture, in a current car-orientated built environment must be explored, highlighting the role of personal factors and the physical conditions to take up cycling. This paper applies the transactional model of behaviour change to investigate the influence of bicycle supplying on behaviour and mobility patterns changing, taking U-Bike Portugal Project and the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Oporto as a case of study

A Concepção da teoria dos jogos e suas implicações teóricas para as relações internacionais: limites e possibilidades

Partindo do pressuposto de que o homem é um ser racional, que procura fazer sempre a melhor escolha dentre uma série de opções, a teoria dos jogos e seu approach conceitual são utilizados pelas teorias de Relações Internacionais a fim de complementarem estudos sobre análises de seus cenários de conflitos e cooperação. Dessa forma a questão central do estudo é a justificativa teórica da ideia da racionalidade como uma variável a ser considerada quando se trata de interação entre seus atores e suas influências na cenário internacional, quando os jogadores nem sempre fazem a melhor escolha dentre todas as opções, que é o que caracteriza a própria racionalidade. Escola : família :matemática : que relações?

X Encontro da Seção de Matemática da Sociedade das Ciências da Educação, realizado na Consolação, Peniche em 2001A complexidade do mundo actual exige que a escola colabore com a família e a envolva como fazendo parte integrante da comunidade educativa. Nesse sentido foi dado um passo significativo quando se criou a Confederação Nacional da Associação de Pais (CONFAP) e quando se determina que os pais passem a participar no Conselho de escola ou Área escola (decreto lei nº172/91). A falta de tradição em colaborações estreitas com as famílias por parte da escola corre o risco de anular na prática as disposições legais, se não forem postas em prática medidas concretas tanto a nível dos órgãos de poder da escola como da parte dos professores. Se o grande objectivo do envolvimento da família na escola é uma melhoria das aprendizagens dos alunos, há que pôr em marcha iniciativas que permitam: a) identificar aspectos críticos da relação escola família; b) estudar processos de incentivar a colaboração dos pais; c) implementar e avaliar medidas concretas para levar a escola à família e a família à escola, nomeadamente no caso das aprendizagens da Matemática. São desafios que se colocam a gestores, professores e a investigadores. Neste documento irão ser abordados alguns aspectos inseridos em duas partes. Na primeira far-se-á uma breve análise da relação escola – família em termos gerais procurando situar a situação portuguesa no panorama da situação de alguns países. Numa segunda parte irão ser relatados algumas conclusões de estudos feitos em Portugal e noutros países e levantadas algumas questões no âmbito da relação Matemática – família, focando-se a questão dos trabalhos de casa de Matemática e o apoio da família a esta tradicional componente da vida escolar dos nossos alunos que é o TPC

The national physics and chemistry exams and the learning of sciences

Dissertação apresentada para obtenção do Grau de Doutor em Ciências da Educação, pela Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de LisboaThis work has as its starting point the acknowledgement of significant fluctuations in the degree of difficulty of the Physics-Chemistry national exams. The study of these fluctuations from 1949 to 2005 aims to understand to what extent the differences, which occurred in the content, the structure of the exams, and the adopted standards, are reflected on the degree of difficulty they present. It reports and provides comparative standard-setting results of Portuguese exams of Physics and Chemistry for the nine and the last years of secondary schooling through the use of different item-grouping approaches. Three standard setting methods, Contrasting Groups, Beuk and Extended Angoff, were applied in order to study the differences in item, panellist and item difficulty in final performance. Initially, my goal in this work was to investigate the existence of possible differences in exam results in a logical and holistic manner, as to promote improvements in the teaching and learning process. I found, however, that it was very difficult to establish a single difficulty variation pattern due to the heterogeneity of the results. Even though the cognitive analysis allowed for the creation of a group of items, the evolution in the exams analysed, in a 50 year period, reflects the changes in the educational policies and allow for other considerations to be pondered based on different political, social and economic contexts

University and industry : strange bedfellows or birds of a feather?

This is an entirely new path for Universities who have doubts regarding their role in the future. The rapid evolution of cross-border activities beyond the European space, the university rankings, the business-university, the market, the feeling that national borders are blurred and sometimes don’t exist at all - globalization is changing the face of the European university. The paradigm shift from cooperation to competition affects the university identity. Is the University an institution provider of knowledge and a “public good” or should we consider it as business company, profit oriented? In spite of the competition change, used in the open words of the 2020 European Strategy we have to preserve the thing that most define our European identity – the feeling of belonging to a Social Europe
