    Check list of ground-dwelling ant diversity (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) of the Iguazú National Park with a comparison at regional scale

    We describe the ant fauna of Iguazú National Park (INP), a region of high biodiversity andendemism in northeastern Argentina that includes the southernmost protected area ofthe Atlantic Forest (AF). Ants were sampled over seven periods from 1998 to 2011 usinga variety of techniques. We also surveyed museum collections and the scientific literatureto obtain additional records of ants from INP. In addition to providing a species list, wecompare ant composition of INP to other sites in the Upper Paraná, Serra do Mar CoastalForest and Araucaria ecoregion of AF. A total of 172 ant species belonging to 56 genera arereported; 56 species are new records for Misiones Province and 39 species are reportedfrom Argentina for the first time. Alto Paraná and Canindeyú departments in Paraguaypresent the most similar ant fauna to INP. Serra da Bodoquena in Brazil and Pilcomayoin Argentina showed higher similarity with the Upper Paraná AF ecoregion, despite thatSerra da Bodoquena is composed of a mix of ecoregions. Ant diversity was lower in UpperParaná than in Serra do Mar Coastal Forest ecoregion.     Comunicação e os novos papéis sociais da mulher: o caso do reposicionamento da Avon

    O trabalho proposto é um estudo de caso do reposicionamento da Avon Products, Inc. no início dos anos 90 e seus reflexos na subsidiária brasileira. O reposicionamento da empresa faz-se necessário quando a empresa percebe, mesmo que tardiamente, que seu público-alvo se transforma: a partir dos anos 70, com a entrada da mulher no mercado de trabalho, a empresa encontra cada vez menos mulheres dispostas a trabalhar meio expediente, e as vendedoras passam a não encontrar suas clientes em casa. O estudo traz um breve histórico da empresa, no mundo e no Brasil, e outros fatores responsáveis pela necessidade de se reformular sua comunicação. Faz uma revisão teórica sobre os conceitos envolvidos no estudo para avaliar os métodos da empresa: o conceito de vendas pessoais, de posicionamento e suas aplicações, composto de comunicação no contexto da Avon e a mudança de papéis da mulher na sociedade e suas conseqüências no ambiente de mercado. O estudo foca o novo composto de comunicação, desenvolvido tendo em vista essa nova realidade da mulher. O estudo aborda, também, a eficácia do novo posicionamento adotado

    Prototype and methodology for the characterization of the polymer-calibrator interface heat transfer coefficient

    The extrusion of technical thermoplastics profiles generally uses a dry calibration/cooling system, composed by one or several calibrators in series. One of the major difficulties to be faced when modelling this important stage is an adequate prescription of the heat transfer coefficient, hinterface, between the plastic profile surface and the cooling medium, which must include the effect of the interface contact resistance. This is the motivation that led the present research team to develop a prototype calibration system and respective methodology for the characterization of hinterface values which is able to consider a variety of conditions that can be found in extrusion practice. A modular construction was adopted for the calibration system, which allows studying easily the effect of several process parameters.     "I have always lived with the disease in the family": family adaptation to hereditary cancer-risk

    BACKGROUND: Hereditary cancer syndromes have been conceptualized as a family level process. The present study explores the complexity and challenges of family adaptation to the hereditary cancer syndrome, in the context of genetic counseling and long-term cancer risk management and follow-up surveillance. METHODS: We performed semi-structured interviews with 13 participants with one of the following hereditary cancer syndromes: Lynch Syndrome, Hereditary Diffuse Gastric Cancer Syndrome, Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Syndrome, or Familial Adenomatous Polyposis. The interview was developed through a participatory approach with the involvement of healthcare professionals and individuals with first-hand experience of living with the hereditary cancer syndromes. RESULTS: The family is the main source of information and emotional support to deal with hereditary cancer syndromes. Multiple individual adaptation processes and communal coping networks interact, influencing the emotional and health-related behavior of family members. This is affected and affects the family’s communication and its’ members reactions to disclosure, with consequent changes in relationships. CONCLUSIONS: The systemic interdependent dynamics of family adaptation calls for family-centered care of genetic cancer syndromes

    The role of food processing in the inflammatory potential of diet during pregnancy

    The aim was to investigate the relationship between the energy contribution (E%) of foods according to the degree of industrial processing and the energy-adjusted dietary inflammatory index (E-DII) in pregnancy. Two 24-hour dietary recalls were obtained from each of the 784 pregnant women. Adjusted linear regression models allowed observing an inverse association between E-DII scores and E% from minimally processed foods β = -0.049 (95%CI -0.055– -0.042) and a direct association with the E% of ultra-processed foods β = 0.052 (95%CI 0.045–0.058), indicating a relationship between the dietary inflammatory potential and the degree of industrial processing of foods

    Association of synthetic anthelmintics and natural monoterpenes against Haemonchus contortus

    The resistance of Haemonchus contortus to synthetic anthelmintics is an increasing concern and different strategies are being evaluated. The present trial studied the in vitro effect of the association of synthetic compound and natural monoterpene on eggs and larvae of H. contortus. The monoterpenes carvacrol, thymol, r-carvone, s-carvone, citral and p-cymene, and the synthetic antihelmintic ivermectin, and albendazole were used. Egg Hatch Test (EHT) and Larval Migration Inhibition Test (LMIT) were performed. The lowest efficient concentration of monoterpenes in EHT (≤ 11% of efficacy) and LMIT (≤ 18% of efficacy) was used in association with different concentration of synthetic compound. The IC50 and Synergism Rate (SR) were calculated. The highest efficiency of monoterpenes in EHT was obtained with r-carvone (IC50 = 0.25 mg/mL) and s-carvone (IC50 = 0.79 mg/mL) and in the LMIT with r-carvone (IC50 = 0.60 mg/mL). The best association was observed in the EHT with albendazol (thymol SR: 2.9 and r-carvone SR: 1.6) and ivermectin (citral SR: 1.9 and carvacrol SR:1.7). No synergistic effect was obtaining using the LMIT. The combination of synthetic compound and natural monoterpenes could be positive to gastrointestinal nematodes control: However this strategy should be carefully analysed due to the possibility of antagonic effects among the different compounds.Fil: Costa Junior, Livio.     Anti-EGFR therapy: strategies in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

    Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a tyrosine kinase receptor that activates downstream signaling pathways, including the Ras-MEK-Erk and PI3K-AKT pathways, leading to cell proliferation, resistance to apoptosis, angiogenesis and the ability to metastasize. EGFR overexpression is a significant finding in cancer, particularly in head and neck cancer, where it is also associated with a poor prognosis. In recent years, several molecules have been designed to inhibit EGFR activation. Among the many available anti-EGFR drugs, only cetuximab was approved for the treatment of head and neck cancers. However, no predictive biomarkers of cetuximab response are currently known. In the present review, we provide an updated assessment of EGFR biology and its clinical impact in head and neck cancers. A special emphasis is placed on novel patents of EGFR-inhibitors that are anticipated to diversify the anti-EGFR therapies available to treat head and neck cancers. In particular, we outline a new class of irreversible multi-target inhibitors (e.g. afatinib, icotinib, CUDC-101), which may significantly contribute to new head and neck cancer therapies.The authors would like to acknowledge Dr. Laura Mussel white for critical revision of the manuscript.
