Invented spelling and perspectives on spelling development: The necessity of an integrated cognitive model
There are several models about the mechanism that make pre-school children evolve regarding the quality of their invented spelling. Ehri's teorical perspective (1997) describes the development of children's spelling skills in terms of their increasing ability to map sounds of words to phonetically appropriate letters. According to this perspective, written language is conceived as an instrument for translating oral language and phonological awareness determines the precision of invented spelling. This model neglects linguistic variables that might influence children ability to analyse the oral and written language and also does not conceive children's reflection about written code as a factor of evolution. The constructivist perspective from Ferreiro (1988), emphasizes the importance of internal conflict between different criterion about the organization of the alphabetic code. For instance, the repetition of the same vowel in syllabic phonetised writing might cause a conflict in children's thinking with another criterion that they attaint, related with the variation of letters within the written word (e.g. Nunes Carraher and Rego (1984) cited a Portuguese-speaking child who spelled urubu 'vulture' as UUU). This conflict might lead children to analyse syllables in their phonemes and became a source for an alphabetic approach of writing. This and other conflicts are the main factor, from the point of view of this theory, for the evolution of children's conceptions about written language. However those mechanisms are described independently of children ability to analyse oral words or the frequency of words and the articulatory properties of phonemes that integrate those words. On the other hand, Polo, Kessler and Treiman (2005), think that that statistical learning skills exists from an early age. These skills are applied in learning to spell, as in other tasks. This perspective emphasizes that children's writing reflects the characteristics of the input to which they have been exposed as they try to find meaningful patterns in regularities of written language. These regularities give children information about graphical as well as phonological patterns of the language in which they reflected their very early spellings. However, this perspective never analyses the nature of children thinking and how that reflects their approach to written language. It is quite important to create a model that integrates these several contribution. © 2011 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. All rights reserved.N/
Relations between children’s invented spelling and the development of phonological awareness
The objective of this study was to assess the impact on phonological skills of a
training program that was intended to lead preschool children to move from prephonetic
spellings to early phonemic spellings. The participants were 30 preschool children who were
divided into two groups (experimental and control groups) that were equivalent in terms of the
children’s intelligence, the number of letters with which they were familiar and the nature of
their invented spelling. The intervention proved effective, inasmuch as the children in the
experimental group moved to early phonemic spellings, whereas those in the control group did
not. This conceptual evolution entailed enhanced performance in phonemic classification,
segmentation and deletion tests, in which the children in the experimental group displayed a
degree of progress which differed significantly from that achieved by the members of the control
group
Phonological abilities and writing among portuguese preschool children
The objective of this study was to identify causal relationships
between the development of phonological abilities and progress in
writing in preschool children. The participants were 44 children, with an
average age of 5 years and 6 months, and whose writing was syllabic
with phonetization. The children were divided into three groups. They
were subjected to a pre-test and a post-test that were intended to
evaluate both their writing and their phonological skills. In between the
two tests experimental group 1 underwent a writing training program
designed to lead them to produce syllabic-alphabetic/alphabetic writing,
while experimental group 2 was subjected to a phonological training
program designed to work on phonetic units. The third group served as a
control group. The number of letters known and the level of intelligence
were controlled. The children in the two experimental groups achieved
results that revealed a similar degree of progress (greater than the
control group) in both their writing and their phonological abilities
The impact of invented spelling on phonemic awareness
The objective of this study was to assess the impact of a training programme, designed to make preschool-age children’s invented
spelling evolve, on their phonemic awareness. The participants were 90 children who were divided into 3 experimental
and 3 control groups based on the nature of their invented spelling. Children’s phonemic skills were evaluated in a pre-test and
a post-test. In between the experimental groups underwent the training program. The experimental groups achieved greater progress
in the phonemic tests than the control groups. The training’s impact on those tests differed depending on the level of the children’s
invented spelling
No Bem-Estar psicológico, o
The present monograph intends to expand the investigation with adolescents, through
the collection of information, on factors associated with the development and maintenance of
psychological disorders. The focus is based on three variables: Automatic Thoughts,
Psychological Inflexibility and Psychological Well-Being, aiming to: (a) identify differences in
the content of Automatic Thoughts according to sex and age group; (b) identify differences in
content in Psychological Inflexibility according to sex and age group; (c) identify differences
regarding psychological well-being according to sex and age group; and (d) to analyze the
relationship between Automatic Thoughts, Psychological Inflexibility and Psychological Wellbeing in adolescents.
The data were collected from a sample of 275 adolescents, aged between 12 and 18
years. Three measurement instruments were applied: Children Automatic Thoughts-CATSN/P, Avoidance and Fusion Questionnaire for Youth (AFQ-Y) and Escala de Bem-Estar
Psicológico para Adolescentes (EBEPA).
The results suggest that in Automatic Thoughts it’s the girls who present higher scores
in the dimensions Negative Vision of Self and Social Threat and the boys in the dimensions
Positive Thoughts and Hostility. There are no differences between age groups. In the second
variable, the results indicate that it’s the girls who present the greatest Psychological
Inflexibility and this increases with age. In Psychological well-being, boys have higher scores
in the Total Psychological Well-Being Index, in the Positive Cognitive-Emotional dimensions
and Perceived Skills. Girls, showed higher scores in the Negative Cognitive-Emotional and
Anxiety dimensions. It is also verified that Psychological well-being decreases with increasing
age.
Finally, there were some significant moderate and strong correlations between
Automatic Thoughts, Psychological Inflexibility and Psychological Well-being
The psychogenetic perspective on written language
development proposed by Ferreiro, seems to present
some gaps concerning the processes inherent to the
transistion between different conceptual levels.
In this article, we aim to contribute for the understanding
of the processes underlying the transition between
the syllabic hypothesis and the first steps on writing
phonetization among kindergarten children.
We start from the hypothesis that childrens' knowledge
about the name of the letters interact with the
analysis that syllabic children, who still do not phonetize
the writing, make of the word oral segments, allowing
them to achieve a written production where the
oral sounds start to be represented by conventional letters. On the contrary, we expect that pre-syllabic
children do not achieve this conceptual level.
Of the 38 children who participated, 23 were
syllabic and 15 pre-syllabic. We asked them to write a
set of words where the initial sound of each one of
them coincides with the one of the name of a letter
known by the child, as well as a set of control words. Overall, findings suggest that, in contrast with presyllabic
children, the introduction of facilitating words
of an analysis of the correspondences beiween oral and
writing, prompt the syllabic children to phonetize this

Two spelling programmes that promote understanding of the alphabetic principle in preschool children
Our aim in this study was to test two programmes designed to lead preschool children to
use conventional letters to spell the initial consonants of words. These programmes differed in
terms of the characteristics of the vowels that followed those consonants. The participants were 45
five-year-old Portuguese children whose spelling was pre-syllabic - they used strings of random
letters in their spelling, making no attempt to match the oral to the written language. They were
divided into two experimental and a control group. Their age, level of intelligence, and
phonological awareness were controlled. Their spelling was assessed in a pre- and a post-test. Inbetween,
children from the experimental groups participated in two programmes where they had
to think about the relationships between the initial consonant and the corresponding phoneme in
different words: In Experimental Group 1, the initial consonants were followed by an open vowel,
and in Experimental Group 2, these same consonants were followed by a closed vowel. The
control group classified geometric shapes. Experimental Group 1 achieved better results than
Experimental Group 2 following open vowels, being more able to generalize the phonological
procedures to sounds that were not taught during the programmes. Both experimental groups used
conventional letters to represent several phonemes in the post-test whereas the control group
continued to produce pre-syllabic spellings
compreensão do princípio alfabético.
