Anthropological Bases of Resilience: Narrative Self-Construction as a Protective Factor in Resilience

    Get PDF
Resilience as a construct is a relatively recent phenomenon that has now grown in importance, especially in new educational and pedagogical proposals that focus on prevention against possible risky behaviours. As a result, over the last few decades, approaches to resilience have undergone a transformation that goes far beyond this change in its conceptual conception. In this paper, we bring together two aspects that are considered fundamental to understanding resilience as a human capacity, leaving aside how it may be applied. There is a clear need to base resilience on clearly anthropological aspects that, suggested by philosophical anthropology, can help us to see that this capacity is the fruit of human nature itself. It is at this point that anthropology joins narrative self-construction in the development of the internal logos. Those anthropological traits are undoubtedly those that can help us to understand how a person can make themselves through their own internal dialogue in clear interrelation with their environment. Based on this personal growth, they will be able to develop aspects of their own personality that will help them to overcome adverse situations and even, in very extreme cases, traumatic situations

    Get PDF
They fulfil a social function and that is their principal aim, but they are neither the result of intellectual reflection, nor do they necessarily arouse reflection in the listener. Once again we may say that language does not function here as means of transmission of thought. This paper presents a possible approach to the analysis and use of the Spanish discourse marker bueno in everyday conversation. The analysis is part (and at the same time a result) of a project in which the functions of bueno are compared to those of well in English conversations. In this project English and Spanish discourse markers are being compared in order to find similarities and differences between their function and use in conversation. In this paper we do not try to reach definitive conclusions since the corpus needs to be extended and it is necessary to elaborate a framework in order to classify every occurrence of the different markers in a systematic [email protected]

Digital Storytelling and Multimodal Literacy in Education

    Get PDF
This article argues in favour of using digital storytelling to encourage a critical socio-educational focus in education and include multimodal explicit teaching in the curriculum. The analysis of fifty digital stories indicates that the students developed a certain awareness of the issue chosen for their story (e.g. violence, racism, war) since the final product transmits a critical perspective on the topic itself. Further work, however, needs to be invested in the development of the digital story content itself and on the issue of multimodal learning, with especial emphasis on the interface between multimodal elements and more traditional modes of transmitting ideas.

The Corpus of Leo’s novels. Some suggestions concerning their date and promulgation

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaThe new edition of the Novels of Leo VI the Wise by Spyros Troianos is perhaps a good occasion to review several arguments concerning the dating and constitution of this collection of 113 Novels which has long attracted the interest of scholars but of which no systematic study has been undertaken since those of Monnier and Spulber at the beginning of the 20th century. It is the purpose of this article to encourage such a study by proposing new arguments. In particular, we shall question the prevailing communis opinio, according to which Novels were published in 888, simultaneously with the Basilica. This dating of the Novels was first proposed by Andreas Schminck and supported by the analysis by the late Marie Theres Fögen of its connection with the Basilica. Both articles were published in the same number of Subseciva Groningana some twenty years ago. Robustness Algorithms for the Airport Gate Assignment Problem

    Get PDF
Assigning commercial flights to available airport gates can have a major impact on the efficiency of flight schedules as well as on the level of passenger satisfaction with the service. These assignments also depend on the service requirements of flights and the capacity of stand facilities. Unexpected changes also called perturbations, like those due to air traffic delays, severe weather conditions, or equipment failures, may disrupt the initial assignments and increase the difficulty of maintaining smooth operations, which will detrimentally affect costumer satisfaction. The provision of solutions which reduce the potential detrimental effect of perturbations in the stands already assigned on the day of operation is desirable and some approaches are presented here, and compare between them to help identify their performance and trends

Magnifying the ordinary: genre mixture and humour in the TV series 'Chuck'

    Get PDF
Chuck is an American television series about a "normal" guy who works at the Buy More. His life changes dramatically when he becomes the most important person for the USA intelligence. This gives rise to a conflict between civilian and spy life. The analysis involves a multimodal account (cf. Lorenzo-Dus 2009) of the aesthetics (Cardwell 2005) of the second season that illustrates how the series establishes a parallelism between Chuck's life as a spy and that of his colleagues at the Buy More. By combining elements from different genres (Altman 1988) it portrays a rather "different from what may be the expected-representation" (Kress and van Leeuwen 2001:10) of the routine at the workplace (Armstrong 2005), thus depicting a rare humorous magnification of the ordinary life of a group of ordinary citizens with an ordinary job (cf.
