    Overview of platooning systems

    This paper presents an overview of current projects that deal with vehicle platooning. The platooning concept can be defined as a collection of vehicles that travel close together, actively coordinated in formation. Some expected advantages of platooning include increased fuel and traffic efficiency, safety and driver comfort. There are many variations of the details of the concept such as: the goals of platooning, how it is implemented, mix of vehicles, the requirements on infrastructure, what is automated (longitudinal and lateral control) and to what level. The following projects are presented: SARTRE a European platooning project; PATH a California traffic automation program that includes platooning; GCDC a cooperative driving initiative, and; Energy ITS a Japanese truck platooning project

    Modeling cooperative and autonomous adaptive cruise control dynamic responses using experimental data

    International audienceVehicle longitudinal control systems such as (commercially available) autonomous Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and its more sophisticated variant Cooperative ACC (CACC) could potentially have significant impacts on traffic flow. Accurate models of the dynamic responses of both of these systems are needed to produce realistic predictions of their effects on highway capacity and traffic flow dynamics. This paper describes the develop-ment of models of both ACC and CACC control systems that are based on real experimental data. To this end, four production vehicles were equipped with a commercial ACC system and a newly developed CACC controller. The Intelligent Driver Model (IDM) that has been widely used for ACC car-following modeling was also implemented on the production vehicles. These controllers were tested in different traffic situations in order to measure the actual responses of the vehicles. Test results indicate that: (1) the IDM controller when implemented in our experimental test vehicles does not perceptibly follow the speed changes of the preceding vehicle; (2) strings of consecutive ACC vehicles are unstable, amplifying the speed variations of preceding vehicles; and (3) strings of consecutive CACC vehicles overcome these limitations, providing smooth and stable car following responses. Simple but accurate models of the ACC and CACC vehicle following dynamics were derived from the actual measured responses of the vehicles and applied to simulations of some simple multi-vehicle car following scenarios

    Adaptive model predictive control for co-ordination of compression and friction brakes in heavy duty vehicles

    In this paper, an adaptive model predictive control scheme is designed for speed control of heavy vehicles. The controller co-ordinates use of compression brakes and friction brakes on downhill slopes. Moreover, the model predictive controller takes the actuator constraints into account. A recursive least square scheme with forgetting is used in parallel with the controller to update the estimates of vehicle mass and road grade. The adaptation improved the model predictive controller. Also online estimation of the road grade enhanced the closed-loop performance further by contributing through feedforward control. Simulations of realistic driving scenarios with a validated longitudinal vehicle model are used throughout this paper to illustrate the benefits of co-ordinating the two braking mechanisms and influence of unknown vehicle mass and road grade.     Towards life-long mobility: Accessible transportation with automation

    Despite the prevalent discussions on automated vehicles, little research has been conducted with a focus on inclusiveness of traditionally excluded populations from driving. Even though we may envision a future where everyone can drive with perfect automation, the problem will not be that simple. As with any other problem domains, we need to scrutinize all the design considerations - not only each population's characteristics (capabilities and limitations), but also the entire system, technological limitations, and task environments. To this end, the present paper explores challenges and opportunities of automated vehicles for multiple populations, including people with various difficulties/disabilities, older adults, and children. This paper brings up some controversial points and is expected to promote lively discussions at the conference

    Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control in Real Traffic Situations

    International audienceIntelligent vehicle cooperation based on reliable communication systems contributes not only to reducing traffic accidents, but also to improving traffic flow. Adaptive Cruise Con-trol (ACC) systems can gain enhanced performance by adding vehicle-vehicle wireless communication to provide additional information to augment range sensor data, leading to Cooperative ACC (CACC). This paper presents the design, development, implementation and testing of a CACC system. It consists of two controllers, one to manage the approaching maneuver to the leading vehicle and the other to regulate car-following once the vehicle joins the platoon. The system has been implemented on four production Infiniti M56s vehicles, and this paper details the results of experiments to validate the performance of the controller and its improvements with respect to the commercially available ACC system

    Formal Verification of Autonomous Vehicle Platooning

    The coordination of multiple autonomous vehicles into convoys or platoons is expected on our highways in the near future. However, before such platoons can be deployed, the new autonomous behaviors of the vehicles in these platoons must be certified. An appropriate representation for vehicle platooning is as a multi-agent system in which each agent captures the "autonomous decisions" carried out by each vehicle. In order to ensure that these autonomous decision-making agents in vehicle platoons never violate safety requirements, we use formal verification. However, as the formal verification technique used to verify the agent code does not scale to the full system and as the global verification technique does not capture the essential verification of autonomous behavior, we use a combination of the two approaches. This mixed strategy allows us to verify safety requirements not only of a model of the system, but of the actual agent code used to program the autonomous vehicles

    Feedback control algorithms for the dissipation of traffic waves with autonomous vehicles

    International audienceThis article considers the problem of traffic control in which an autonomous vehicle is used to regulate human piloted traffic to dissipate stop and go traffic waves. We first investigate the controllability of well-known microscopic traffic flow models, namely i) the Bando model (also known as the optimal velocity model), ii) the follow-the-leader model, and iii) a combined optimal velocity follow the leader model. Based on the controllability results, we propose three control strategies for an autonomous vehicle to stabilize the other, human-piloted traffic. We subsequently simulate the control effects on the microscopic models of human drivers in numerical experiments to quantify the potential benefits of the controllers. Based on the simulations, finally we conduct a field experiment with 22 human drivers and a fully autonomous-capable vehicle, to assess the feasibility of autonomous vehicle based traffic control on real human piloted traffic. We show that both in simulation and in the field test that an autonomous vehicle is able to dampen waves generated by 22 cars, and that as a consequence, the total fuel consumption of all vehicles is reduced by up to 20%
