    Get PDF
A single cyberattack event involving 1 major corporation can cause severe business and social devastation. In this single case study, a major U.S. airline company was selected for exploration of the strategies information technology administrators and airline managers implemented to reduce the financial devastation that may be caused by a cyberattack. Seven participants, of whom 4 were airline managers and 3 were IT administrators, whose primary responsibility included implementation of strategies to plan for and respond to cyberattacks participated in the data collection process. This study was grounded on the general systems theory. Data collection entailed semistructured face-to-face and telephone interviews and collection and review of public documents. The data analysis process of this study involved the use of Yin\u27s 5-step process of compiling, disassembling, reassembling, interpreting, and concluding, which provided a detailed analysis of the emerging themes. The findings produced results that identified strategies organizational managers and administrators of a U.S. airline implemented to reduce the fiscal influence of cyberattacks, such as proactive plans for education and training, active management, and an incident response plan. The findings of this study might affect social change by offering all individuals a perspective on creating effective cyberculture. An understanding of cyberculture could include the focus of a heightened understanding, whereby, to ensure the security of sensitive or privileged data and information and of key assets, thus, reducing the fiscal devastation that may be caused by cyberattacks

This study focused on the transitioning of graduate nurses (GNs) employed by a teaching hospital in the eastern United States to the professional role of registered nurse after a 6-week orientation was the focus of this study. Benner\u27s novice-to-expert theory served as the framework for this qualitative case study. Twelve participants were chosen from 3 specific populations: GNs, nursing preceptors, and nurse managers. Three research questions asked about the perceptions of newly licensed nurses after completion of the orientation process related to their ability to make critical decisions in the professional role of RN, how the preceptor educational training program prepared staff nurses for the role of preceptor, and the beliefs of newly licensed nurses and nurse managers regarding the role of nurse mentor. Interviews and documents were the sources of the qualitative data collected from the participants and the organization. The data were coded manually in a comparative manner to extract the themes that emerged from the findings. Participants agreed that the orientation program did not provide sufficient time and education for GNs to learn and grow professionally and did not offer training to nurses serving as preceptors. Results identified the need for revisions to the orientation program that would offer consistency and relevancy to the needs of all stakeholders. The preceptor workshop and a transition-to-practice (TTP) program were developed based on the outcomes. The TTP program could benefit this teaching hospital as well as local, state, and national health care facilities that employ newly licensed nurses. Improving the training of preceptors and implementing the orientation program for GNs for a minimum of 6 to 12 months would improve patient outcomes and increase nurse competency

Signaling pathways of cell proliferation are involved in the differential effect of erythropoietin and its carbamylated derivative

It is now recognized that in addition to its activity upon erythroid progenitor cells, erythropoietin (Epo) is capable of stimulating survival of different non-erythroid cells. Since stimulation of erythropoiesis is unwanted for neuroprotection, Epo-like compounds with a more selective action are under investigation. Although the carbamylated derivative of erythropoietin (cEpo) has demonstrated non-hematopoietic tissue protection without erythropoietic effect, little is known about differential mechanisms between Epo and cEpo. Therefore, we investigated signaling pathways which play a key role in Epo-induced proliferation. Here we show that cEpo blocked FOXO3a phosphorylation, allowing expression of downstream target p27kip1 in UT-7 and TF-1 cells capable of erythroid differentiation. This is consistent with the involvement of cEpo in slowing down G1-to-S-phase progression compared with the effect of Epo upon cell cycle. In contrast, similar antiapoptotic actions of cEpo and Epo were observed in neuronal SH-SY5Y cells. Inhibition and competition assays suggest that Epo may act through both, the homodimeric (EpoR/EpoR) and the heterodimeric (EpoR/βcR) receptors in neuronal SH-SY5Y cells and probably in the TF-1 cell type as well. Results also indicate that cEpo needs both the EpoR and βcR subunits to prevent apoptosis of neuronal cells. Based on evidence suggesting that cell proliferation pathways were involved in the differential effect of Epo and cEpo, we went forward to studying downstream signals. Here we provide the first evidence that unlike Epo, cEpo failed to induce FOXO3a inactivation and subsequent p27kip1 downregulation, which is clearly shown in the incapacity of cEpo to induce erythroid cell growth.

    Get PDF
The homework, in addition to being the recreation of processes, products and subjects involved in an activity, which involve the achievement of goals and objectives for the benefit of a common good, includes the action or actions aimed at solving a situation in a context determined, where said situation must be solved by making use of all available knowledge. Due to the importance of homework within the teaching-learning process, the need is born to see it not only as a tool to put into practice or measure learning, but also to develop competencies, that is why the purpose of designing a proposal from the school management that contributes to the resignification of the school task as a strategy for the development of competencies in elementary school students arises. This research studies the variables Competencies Development, Resignification of homework and School Management. The study has a rationalist-deductive approach and, in correspondence with the epistemological approach, the quantitative and qualitative components are integrated (mixed method). The analysis units are represented by fifth grade elementary students, parents, Elementary teachers and rectors of public educational institutions of the District of Barranquilla. For data collection, techniques such as questionnaires with Likert scale and documentary review were used. The research allows to conclude that students develop competencies when dealing with complex homeworks, they are able to use their acquired knowledge supported by learning strategies and techniques, to validate possible solutions to problem situations, within a particular context and that the conception of homework as sequenced and intentional learning activities is a fundamental part of their resignification process, in which the participation of all the actors involved is essential.

Understanding and improving transitions of older people: a user and carer centred approach

    Get PDF
This project focuses on older people and their transition between different services and agencies in health and social care. Research studies and reports from inspectors have shown that older people experience many problems before, during and after transitions. This project will be conducted in four local areas and has two key aims. First, it will explore what information, support and care is needed by older people (and their carers) as they go through a transition. Second, the project team will work with people and organisations in the four local areas to put the findings into practice. It is increasingly recognised that older people should be involved in improving the quality of services for their use. In this project, older people who are service users and carers will be recruited, trained and supported to participate in the research. They will work with academic researchers to conduct in-depth interviews in order to find out about older people's experiences of a recent care transition. Analysis of the data and presentation of the findings will be carried out jointly by academic and user/carer researchers. The project team will feed back the findings of the interviews in each of the local areas. It will also provide support to people and organisations in these areas to put the findings into practice, in order to improve transitions for older people. In each area, a local advisory group, which include service users and carers, will lead this process. The findings from the in-depth interviews and the local implementation activities will be shared with NHS, social care and other organisations nationally
