KMT-2016-BLG-2052L: Microlensing Binary Composed of M Dwarfs Revealed from a Very Long Time-scale Event
We present the analysis of a binary microlensing event KMT-2016-BLG-2052, for
which the lensing-induced brightening of the source star lasted for 2 seasons.
We determine the lens mass from the combined measurements of the microlens
parallax \pie and angular Einstein radius \thetae. The measured mass
indicates that the lens is a binary composed of M dwarfs with masses of
and . The measured relative
lens-source proper motion of is smaller
than of typical Galactic lensing events, while
the estimated angular Einstein radius of \thetae\sim 1.2~{\rm mas} is
substantially greater than the typical value of .
Therefore, it turns out that the long time scale of the event is caused by the
combination of the slow and large \thetae rather than the heavy mass of
the lens. From the simulation of Galactic lensing events with very long time
scales ( days), we find that the probabilities that long
time-scale events are produced by lenses with masses and
are and 2.6\%, respectively, indicating that
events produced by heavy lenses comprise a minor fraction of long time-scale
events. The results indicate that it is essential to determine lens masses by
measuring both \pie and \thetae in order to firmly identify heavy stellar
remnants such as neutron stars and black holes.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figure
Integration of airborne and ground observations of nitryl chloride in the Seoul metropolitan area and the implications on regional oxidation capacity during KORUS-AQ 2016
Nitryl chloride (ClNO2) is a radical reservoir species that releases chlorine radicals upon photolysis. An integrated analysis of the impact of ClNO2 on regional photochemistry in the Seoul metropolitan area (SMA) during the Korea-United States Air Quality Study (KORUS-AQ) 2016 field campaign is presented. Comprehensive multiplatform observations were conducted aboard the NASA DC-8 and at two ground sites (Olympic Park, OP; Taehwa Research Forest, TRF), representing an urbanized area and a forested suburban region, respectively. Positive correlations between daytime Cl2 and ClNO2 were observed at both sites, the slope of which was dependent on O3 levels. The possible mechanisms are explored through box model simulations constrained with observations. The overall diurnal variations in ClNO2 at both sites appeared similar but the nighttime variations were systematically different. For about half of the observation days at the OP site the level of ClNO2 increased at sunset but rapidly decreased at around midnight. On the other hand, high levels were observed throughout the night at the TRF site. Significant levels of ClNO2 were observed at both sites for 4-5 h after sunrise. Airborne observations, box model calculations, and back-trajectory analysis consistently show that these high levels of ClNO2 in the morning are likely from vertical or horizontal transport of air masses from the west. Box model results show that chlorine-radical-initiated chemistry can impact the regional photochemistry by elevating net chemical production rates of ozone by 25% in the morning
Suppression of stored-beam oscillation and observation of flux improvement during top-up injection
This paper describes a start-to-end study of the suppression of stored-beam oscillation during top-up injection at the Pohang Light Source (PLS-II) beam line. The fast counterkicker implemented in PLS-II suppresses stored-beam oscillations in the vertical plane. During top-up injection in the magnetic spectroscopy beam line of PLS-II, flux improvement due to the suppression of stored-beam oscillation was clearly observed.11Ysciescopu
Search for Anisotropy of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays with the Telescope Array Experiment
We study the anisotropy of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray (UHECR) events
collected by the Telescope Array (TA) detector in the first 40 months of
operation. Following earlier studies, we examine event sets with energy
thresholds of 10 EeV, 40 EeV, and 57 EeV. We find that the distributions of the
events in right ascension and declination are compatible with an isotropic
distribution in all three sets. We then compare with previously reported
clustering of the UHECR events at small angular scales. No significant
clustering is found in the TA data. We then check the events with E>57 EeV for
correlations with nearby active galactic nuclei. No significant correlation is
found. Finally, we examine all three sets for correlations with the large-scale
structure of the Universe. We find that the two higher-energy sets are
compatible with both an isotropic distribution and the hypothesis that UHECR
sources follow the matter distribution of the Universe (the LSS hypothesis),
while the event set with E>10 EeV is compatible with isotropy and is not
compatible with the LSS hypothesis at 95% CL unless large deflection angles are
also assumed. We show that accounting for UHECR deflections in a realistic
model of the Galactic magnetic field can make this set compatible with the LSS
hypothesis.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure
OGLE-2016-BLG-0613LABb: A Microlensing Planet in a Binary System
We present the analysis of OGLE-2016-BLG-0613, for which the lensing light
curve appears to be that of a typical binary-lens event with two caustic spikes
but with a discontinuous feature on the trough between the spikes. We find that
the discontinuous feature was produced by a planetary companion to the binary
lens. We find 4 degenerate triple-lens solution classes, each composed of a
pair of solutions according to the well-known wide/close planetary degeneracy.
One of these solution classes is excluded due to its relatively poor fit. For
the remaining three pairs of solutions, the most-likely primary mass is about
while the planet is a super-Jupiter. In all cases the
system lies in the Galactic disk, about half-way toward the Galactic bulge.
However, in one of these three solution classes, the secondary of the binary
system is a low-mass brown dwarf, with relative mass ratios (1 : 0.03 : 0.003),
while in the two others the masses of the binary components are comparable.
These two possibilities can be distinguished in about 2024 when the measured
lens-source relative proper motion will permit separate resolution of the lens
and source.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figure
