    Changing Notes in the Voices beyond the Rooster Coop: A Neo-Capitalist Coup in Aravind Adiga’s The White Tiger

    Aravind Adiga’s novel The White Tiger encapsulates the complexities of identity formation in a milieu effected by neo-capitalism. The novel, for many, is about a new identity made available to the hitherto marginalized in the form of opportunities unveiled by market forces. It is also perceived as a registration of the frustration and anger of the deprived that has become conscious of the new possibilities. Understandably, interpreting the novel on these lines leads to the identification of the protagonist Balram as a champion of the marginalized, settling scores with the oppressive system. However, there are far subtler notes in the protagonist’s attitude to these sweeping changes than the simple and one dimensional approach of an achiever who is able to break the “rooster coop” and revel at the reversal of fortune. Neither is it a representative voice of the suppressed class turning the table on its oppressor by using the opportunities offered by the global market. The “notes” of the voices that emerge as Balram, the boy from darkness, moves up the ladder to become Ashok Sharma, the entrepreneur hiding in light, not only lack symphony but also create a distinct dissonance. Clearly, the discord in the changing notes is brought about by the forces that changed the world he lives in-a neo-capitalist world.     The Mass-Size Relation from Clouds to Cores. I. A new Probe of Structure in Molecular Clouds

    We use a new contour-based map analysis technique to measure the mass and size of molecular cloud fragments continuously over a wide range of spatial scales (0.05 < r / pc < 10), i.e., from the scale of dense cores to those of entire clouds. The present paper presents the method via a detailed exploration of the Perseus Molecular Cloud. Dust extinction and emission data are combined to yield reliable scale-dependent measurements of mass. This scale-independent analysis approach is useful for several reasons. First, it provides a more comprehensive characterization of a map (i.e., not biased towards a particular spatial scale). Such a lack of bias is extremely useful for the joint analysis of many data sets taken with different spatial resolution. This includes comparisons between different cloud complexes. Second, the multi-scale mass-size data constitutes a unique resource to derive slopes of mass-size laws (via power-law fits).     Determination of hepatoprotective effect of Mussaenda erythrophylla in paracetamol induced hepatotoxicity

    Background: Hepatotoxicity may be defined as liver injury caused by drugs and chemicals. Drug-induced liver injury is a major reason for withdrawing drugs from a market by Food Drug Administration, and it is based on the fact that drug-induced liver injury is responsible for more than 50% of all cases of acute liver failure. Many studies revealed about the hepatotoxic potential of paracetamol. Hence, the present study has undertaken to evaluate the hepatoprotective effect of Mussaenda erythrophylla (ME) in paracetamol induced hepatotoxicity in Wistar albino rats.Methods: The ethanolic extract ME studied for its hepatoprotective effect on paracetamol induced acute liver damage in Wistar albino rats. The degree of protection was measured using biochemical parameters such as serum glutamate oxalate transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), total bilirubin (TBL), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH) peroxidase (GPx), GSH, and ceruloplasmin levels.Results: Paracetamol treated group had enhanced levels of SGPT, SGOT, TBL (p<0.001) and decreased levels of GSH, SOD, and GPx (p<0.001) when compared with control group. Treatment with silymarin and also 200 mg/kg of MEleaf extract had significantly (p<0.001) brought down the elevated levels of SGPT, SGOT, and TBL and an increase in the levels of GSH, SOD, (p<0.01), GPx and ceruloplasmin (p<0.001).Conclusion: The results showed that ethanolic extract of ME leaf extract possesses significant hepatoprotective activity

    Discrete Robust Control of Robot Manipulators using an Uncertainty and Disturbance Estimator

    This article presents the design of a robust observer based on the discrete-time formulation of Uncertainty and Disturbance Estimator (UDE), a well-known robust control technique, for the purpose of controlling robot manipulators. The design results in a complete closed-loop, robust, controller--observer structure. The observer incorporates the estimate of the overall uncertainty associated with the plant, in order to mimic its dynamics, and the control law is generated using an auxiliary error instead of state tracking error. A detailed qualitative and quantitative stability analysis is provided, and simulations are performed on the two-link robot manipulator system. Further, a comparative study with well-known control strategies for robot manipulators is presented. The results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed technique, with better tracking performance and lower control energy compared to other strategies.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, 1 tabl

    Diffusion Tensor Imaging as a novel technique in early detection of cervical spondylotic myelopathy

    Introduction: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is an advanced MR imaging technique which helps in early detection of cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM). Decompressive surgery performed during early stages of the disease was reported to be more successful when compared with later stages. Aim: To evaluate the usefulness of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in early stages of cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) and to aid in better surgical outcome. Materials and methods: This prospective observational study included 25 patients with clinical diagnosis of cervical spondylotic myelopathy who underwent routine MRI of the cervical spine. Conventional MRI sequences along with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) were performed. Quantitative fractional anisotropy (FA) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values were compared at stenotic and nonstenotic segments. Results: A statistically significant difference in mean FA and ADC values were seen at stenotic and nonstenotic segments. In the most stenotic segments, the mean FA value was 0.415 ± 0.203 and in the nonstenotic segment, the mean FA value was 0.717 ± 0.160, which was statistically significant (P &lt; 0.001). The mean ADC value in the most stenotic segments was 1.777 ± 1.005 x 10-3 mm2/s and that of the nonstenotic segments was 1.010 ± 0.458 x 10-3 mm2/s. The difference in the mean ADC value was statistically significant (p &lt;0.001). Conclusion: Use of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) along with conventional MRI sequences enables early detection of the disease and helps in appropriate timing of surgery.     Timescale for equilibration of N/Z gradients in dinuclear systems

    Equilibration of N/Z in binary breakup of an excited and transiently deformed projectile-like fragment (PLF*), produced in peripheral collisions of 64Zn + 27Al, 64Zn, 209Bi at E/A = 45 MeV, is examined. The composition of emitted light fragments (3<=Z<=6) changes with the decay angle of the PLF*. The most neutron-rich fragments observed are associated with a small rotation angle. A clear target dependence is observed with the largest initial N/Z correlated with the heavy, neutron-rich target. Using the rotation angle as a clock, we deduce that N/Z equilibration persists for times as long as 3-4 zs (1zs = 1 x 10^-21 s = 300 fm/c). The rate of N/Z equilibration is found to depend on the initial neutron gradient within the PLF*.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
