    Anti-parity-time topologically undefined state

    We constructed an anti-parity-time-symmetric photonic lattice by using perturbations. The results show the topological state will appear when the waveguide coupling constants κ1<κ2\kappa_1<\kappa_2; Interestingly, a state with undefined winding numbers occurs when κ1=κ2\kappa_1=\kappa_2, in which the light distributes only in the wide waveguides with equal magnitude distribution. Further studies show that the edge state will be strengthened by introducing defect for the topologically non-trivial case, while it will not affect the equal intensity transmission for the topologically undefined state. Our work provides a new way to realize the topological state and equally divided light transmission and might be applicable in optical circuits and optical interconnect

    Lumbar Spinal Cord Activity and Blood Biochemical Changes in Individuals With Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy During Electrical Stimulation

    It is difficult to perform an in vivo evaluation of the nerve conduction mechanism in a patient with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). We aim to explore possible activation differences to enable a further understanding of the nerve conduction mechanisms of diabetic neuropathy and to present a novel clinical method to evaluate nerve injury and recovery. DPN patients (n = 20) and healthy volunteers (n = 20) were included in this study to detect the functional activation of the lumbar spinal cord via electric stimulation. Spinal fMRI data sets were acquired via a single-shot fast spin echo (SSFSE) sequence. A task-related fMRI was performed via low-frequency electrical stimulation. After post-processing, the active voxels and the percentage of signal changes were calculated for the DPN evaluation and the correlations between the blood biochemical indexes, such as glucose, total cholesterol, and hemoglobin A1c were explored. Activation in the DPN patients was primarily observed in the T12 (10/13) vertebral level. The percentage of signal changes in DPN patients was higher than that in the control group (Z = −2.757, P &lt; 0.05). Positive correlation between the percentage of signal changes and the total cholesterol/glucose in the DNP group was found (P &lt; 0.05). Lumbar spinal cord fMRI, based on the SEEP effect, was determined to be feasible. The repetitive activation distribution was primarily located at the T12 vertebral level. Lumbar spinal cord fMRI might be used as a potential tool to assess and reveal the nerve conduction mechanisms in DPN

    Integrated Sr isotope variations and global environmental changes through the Late Permian to early Late Triassic

    New 87Sr/86Sr data based on 127 well-preserved and well-dated conodont samples from South China were measured using a new technique (LA-MC-ICPMS) based on single conodont albid crown analysis. These reveal a spectacular climb in seawater 87Sr/86Sr ratios during the Early Triassic that was the most rapid of the Phanerozoic. The rapid increase began in Bed 25 of the Meishan section (GSSP of the Permian–Triassic boundary, PTB), and coincided closely with the latest Permian extinction. Modeling results indicate that the accelerated rise of 87Sr/86Sr ratios can be ascribed to a rapid increase (>2.8×) of riverine flux of Sr caused by intensified weathering. This phenomenon could in turn be related to an intensification of warming-driven runoff and vegetation die-off. Continued rise of 87Sr/86Sr ratios in the Early Triassic indicates that continental weathering rates were enhanced >1.9 times compared to those of the Late Permian. Continental weathering rates began to decline in the middle–late Spathian, which may have played a role in the decrease of oceanic anoxia and recovery of marine benthos. The 87Sr/86Sr values decline gradually into the Middle Triassic to an equilibrium values around 1.2 times those of the Late Permian level, suggesting that vegetation coverage did not attain pre-extinction levels thereby allowing higher runoff

    Long-term exposure to air pollution and lung function among children in China: Association and effect modification

    BackgroundChildren are vulnerable to the respiratory effects of air pollution, and their lung function has been associated with long-term exposure to low air pollution level in developed countries. However, the impact of contemporary air pollution level in developing countries as a result of recent efforts to improve air quality on children's lung function is less understood.MethodsWe obtained a cross-sectional sample of 617 schoolchildren living in three differently polluted areas in Anhui province, China. 2-year average concentrations of air pollutants at the year of spirometry and the previous year (2017–2018) obtained from district-level air monitoring stations were used to characterize long-term exposure. Forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), and forced expiratory flow between 25 and 75% of FVC (FEF25−75) were determined under strict quality control. Multivariable regression was employed to evaluate the associations between air pollution level and lung function parameters, overall and by demographic characteristics, lifestyle, and vitamin D that was determined by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry.ResultsMean concentration of fine particulate matter was 44.7 μg/m3, which is slightly above the interim target 1 standard of the World Health Organization. After adjusting for confounders, FVC, FEV1, and FEF25−75 showed inverse trends with increasing air pollution levels, with children in high exposure group exhibiting 87.9 [95% confidence interval (CI): 9.5, 166.4] mL decrement in FEV1 and 195.3 (95% CI: 30.5, 360.1) mL/s decrement in FEF25−75 compared with those in low exposure group. Additionally, the above negative associations were more pronounced among those who were younger, girls, not exposed to secondhand smoke, non-overweight, physically inactive, or vitamin D deficient.ConclusionsOur study suggests that long-term exposure to relatively high air pollution was associated with impaired lung function in children. More stringent pollution control measures and intervention strategies accounting for effect modification are needed for vulnerable populations in China and other developing countries

    Model validation and stochastic stability of a hydro-turbine governing system under hydraulic excitations

    This paper addresses the stability of a hydro-turbine governing system under hydraulic excitations. During the operation of a hydro-turbine, water hammer with different intensities occurs frequently, resulting in the stochastic change of the cross-sectional area (A) of the penstock. In this study, we first introduce a stochastic variable u to the cross-sectional area (A) of the penstock related to the intensity of water hammer. Using the Chebyshev polynomial approximation, the stochastic hydro-turbine governing model is simplified to its equivalent deterministic model, by which the dynamic characteristics of the stochastic hydro-turbine governing system can be obtained from numerical experiments. From comparisons based on an operational hydropower station, we verify that the stochastic model is suitable for describing the dynamic behaviors of the hydro-turbine governing system in full-scale applications. We also analyze the change laws of the dynamic variables under increasing stochastic intensity. Moreover, the differential coefficient with different values is used to study the stability of the system, and stability of the hydro-turbine flow with the increasing load disturbance is also presented. Finally, all of the above numerical results supply some basis for modeling efficiently the operation of large hydropower stations

    A Microservices Oriented Edge Computing Framework for LVC Simulation in the IoT Era

    Modeling and simulation are essential methods to better understand a complex system in the real world. Many simulation systems have strong demand for involving physical devices or equipment in the system to improve the fidelity. But most of the current cloud based simulation systems are designed for equipment with adequate resources and suffering from high latency for their centralized communication. Edge computing is getting much attention as a new paradigm for distributed systems involving heterogeneous devices and requiring real-time communication. However, edge computing is still in its initial stage and there is no consensus on the edge framework and implementation. To the best of our knowledge, no detailed studies have explored the edge-side simulation and modeling. In this paper, we study and design an edge-side simulation framework, which exploits light-weight microservices architecture to build scalable and real-time LVC (Live, Virtual and Constructive) simulations. Specifically, the application model is designed to illustrate how LVC simulation integrates with edge computing and cloud computing. The autonomous negotiation service and time synchronization services are discussed in details. Though it is a preliminary edge computing framework for LVC simulation, no similar research has been conducted for modeling and simulation using edge computing

    Numerical Analysis of Thermal Management for High Power LED Array

    Adequate thermal management to remove and dissipate the heat produced by the LED is one of the main challenges in designing LED applications. In view of the above problems, this paper analyzed a heat sink as a heat exchanger for the LED array via the experiment combined with the numerical simulation. The results show that the heat sink is necessary for the LED array to guarantee reliable and safe operation. Moreover, the influence of the height of heat sink on the heat transfer of the LED array is also analyzed, and the optimized height of the heat sink for the 20W LED array is 20 mm. Considering the heat transfer and the manufacturing cost, increasing the heat sink area blindly is not the best way to reduce the LED junction temperature, and more specific work should be considered
