Strategies used to Retain Teachers in Hard to Staff Schools

Get PDF
Teacher attrition has serious consequences in hard to staff schools. Mostly poor and ethnic minority students are deprived of being taught by stable, experienced teachers. The purpose of this study was to explore the strategies used to effectively retain teachers in such schools through the perspective of teachers at a high school that comprises poor and ethnic minority students in southwest Georgia. The conceptual framework that guided this study was Chen\u27s theory about race and social class which postulated that a high percentage of poor ethnic minority students results in low teacher morale. This study explored the reasons why teachers stay at a school where there is a high proportion of poor and ethnic minority students. In this research, the case study strategy of inquiry was employed and data were collected from interviews with 10 teachers (using a 16-question interview guide) to solicit their perspectives on the working conditions at their school. The data were then examined for patterns and themes in the text. The findings produced 4 consolidated themes that revealed (a) aspects of a successful environment created by the principal; (b) an effective mentoring program that was aimed at assisting, developing, and supporting new and inexperienced teachers; (c) good parental involvement where parents were enthusiastic about supporting the school and their child\u27s educational progress; and (d) stable and charismatic leadership that promoted retention. If implemented at hard to staff schools, these best practices can lead to improved teacher morale, better prepared teachers, and higher student achievement

Managing Refractory Status Epilepticus with Early Ketamine Administration

Status epilepticus is a time-sensitive neurological emergency that can be associated with severe disability and mortality. Approximately 20% of patients with status epilepticus will fail to respond to existing first and second-line therapies that act on similar receptors. There is a need for additional therapeutic options. One candidate drug, ketamine, has a novel mechanism of action and may work synergistically to terminate seizures. This study seeks to examine whether ketamine administration along with other second-line medications can reduce seizure burden in patients with status epilepticus. Using an open-label randomized clinical trial of 436 patients, we will examine the proportion of patients with decreased seizure burden at 60 minutes after administration when compared to existing, guideline-recommended, first-line therapy. This study seeks to determine whether this new therapeutic strategy for treatment of status epilepticus, via decreased seizure burden, may improve long-term outcomes in this population

COVID-19’s Effects on Mortality Salience, Death Anxiety, and Worldview Defense

Since late-2019, the world has been trying to overcome an invisible killer: COVID-19. With near constant reminders of the virus the knowledge that a tiny viral particle has potential to harm or even kill has become overwhelming for many. Terror Management Theory (TMT) suggests that when individuals are reminded of their own death people take part in culturally appropriate activities and defend their own culture as ways to alleviate this increased death anxiety. The current study aims to identify whether 1) reminders of COVID-19 prime death thoughts, 2) reminders of COVID-19 increase death anxiety, and 3) increased death anxiety from COVID-19 reminders also increase worldview defense. The results have provided evidence that thinking about COVID-19 does not prime death anxiety reducing behaviors

A Redetermination of the Copper and Iron Content of Some Texas Vegetables

Although special interest has not been placed on mineral contents of vegetables in former years, they have been found to play an important role in nutrition and health maintenance in more recent years. Elvehjen (16) has reported that iron used in the body for maintenance and nutrition is obtained from food stuff, vegetables being the chief source. Bronson (18) and Sherman (3) found that fresh vegetables and fruits were often regarded as a food of low nutritive value because of their high water content and low portions of proteins and fats, but that it was largely these properties which made them important as sources of mineral foods. Peterson and Elvehjen (2) reported that green leafy vegetables are the best sources of iron in the diet. They report the results of about one hundred fifty determinations of iron in common food in which the highest percentage of iron was found in leafy vegetables. They also found a direct relation between iron content and the presence of chlorophyll. Further still, they point out that orange juice contains only 0.00028 percent iron while the orange pulp contains 0.00066 percent iron; the iron remains largely with the pulp on pressing. A similar relation exists between the juice and pulp of tomatoes. McHargue (15) reports that copper is also a normal constituent of plants. It is present in lettuce, cabbage, the germ of white and yellow corn, the germ of wheat, wheat bran etc. McHargue (15) also observes and reports that there is no form of plant or animal life in which copper cannot be found in minute amounts when ever sought for by the right methods. Bronson (18) reports that copper occurs in greatest concentration in plant life in young and tender green leaves and shoots and in the germs of the seed. Russell Stage Institution of Pathology, in 1933, ran an analysis of iron content of foods used in Belleuae Hospital, New York City, New York. They found that some of the foods served in this hospital vary remarkedly in iron content from those of the standard table of Sherman (✲), Rose (✩), Luchsenring and Flor (✲) and Levine and his co-workers (✲). They also found that there is a greater varation in foods of higher iron content than in those of lower iron content. Davidson and Peclerc (1) found that there is appreciable varation in the mineral content of the same vegetable when grown under different conditions. They also found that each vegetable studied has its own range of varation. Some work has also been done in this laboratory regarding iron and soils. A soil analysis of Waller County was made by Johnson, in which he concluded that Waller County soil was low in nitrogen, low in phosphoric acid and calcium and slightly acidic. With reference to iron, Jones made a study on calcium, iron, protein, nitrogen and sulphur content in some Texas vegetables. He concluded that considerable varation was found in different samples of the same vegetable; each sample had its own range of varation; and that analytical data showed that mineral content of vegetables should be studied with the object of determining range of varation rather than a fixed value

The planning of an individual\u27s wardrobe is very important and should be considered very carefully. Clothing has a tremendous influence upon individuals lives. Therefore, it is very essential for every college girl to know the value of clothing and what they can do for her. A girl\u27s career may be affected by her clothing. Many times girls have had opportunities to qualify for positions but because of a lack of interest in dress and a deep appreciation for clothing they have failed to qualify. Regardless to what has been said against appearance as a snare and an empty vanity the fact still remains that dress has a tremendous influence upon individuals, upon the wearer and the beholder. If one is conscious of being properly attired, all of her faculties are stimulated and inspired. The purpose of this thesis is to point out certain important phases in the planning of a Southern college girl\u27s wardrobe. The facts which are essential in order to secure and maintain positive health and to acquaint one with some facts and conditions of clothing which will lead to ill health. It is designed to help the girl to stay within her economical status or within the family income with a feeling of being well dressed at all times. It is planned to help guide the girl in selecting designs that are best suited to one\u27s personality and help bring out the desirable qualities and to obstruct those which are less desirable
