Obtaining Highway Engineering Services from Professional Engineers in Private Practice

    Get PDF
Current state highway department procedures for obtaining private professional engineering services are reviewed and summarized as part of a study of the consulting engineering contracting policy and procedures of the Kentucky Department of Highways. The current bases used by state highway departments for establishment of fees for the professional services of Engineering Consultants, Attorneys, Right-of-Way Appraisers, Right-of-Way Buyers, and Architects are summarized, by state, in Table 1. In general, the consulting engineering contracting practices followed in Kentucky were found to be a combination of the most desirable points of procedure represented in the replies received from other state highway departments and recommended by the Bureau of Public Roads and the professional societies. The recommendations include a Statement of Consulting Engineering Contracting Policy and Procedures which, except for noted revisions, is a restatement of Kentucky Department of Highways Official Order No. 73646, Consulting Engineering Contract Procedures, dated March 2, 1965

Paul Grady and his contributions to accounting and auditing

Paul Franklin Grady (1900-1984) was one of those leaders whose contributions to accounting will remain the subject of intensive study for future guidance. The purpose of this paper is to examine Paul Grady\u27s significant contributions to accounting and auditing and to take the reader into Grady\u27s mind as he was writing his most influential works. Grady strongly believed that in order for accounting to gain respect in society, it must be based on solid principles. His works showed this conviction

    JME 4110: Portable Staircase Escalator

This project was designed to safely move heavy objects up and down stairs with very little hassle. We used a sled-type system with a hand cranking winch to safely move the weight up and down the stairs. The winch was rated for 500 pounds and we calculated that it could potentially pull up to 300 pounds at a maintained minimum safety factor of 2. The main goals of this project were to make sure that someone could safely load the heavy object onto the sled, ensure that they would be out of the danger zone before lowering it, portable, making sure that it operated correctly and worked, as well as that it was green and did not use any electricity and was human powered

Evolution of inflation accounting in the U.S.

    Get PDF
This article presents a discussion of the development of the need for inflation accounting, the history of official pronouncements addressing inflation accounting, and a summary of research studies dealing with reporting the effects of changing prices. Not only does this analysis reveal the continuity, depth, and complexity of the issues facing the FASB, but it also facilitates an understanding of how and why the FASB determined that presentation of supplmentary price-level adjusted information should be voluntary

A New Approach toward Transition State Spectroscopy

Chirped-Pulse millimetre-Wave (CPmmW) rotational spectroscopy provides a new class of information about photolysis transition state(s). Measured intensities in rotational spectra determine species-isomer-vibrational populations, provided that rotational populations can be thermalized. The formation and detection of S0 vinylidene is discussed in the limits of low and high initial rotational excitation. CPmmW spectra of 193 nm photolysis of Vinyl Cyanide (Acrylonitrile) contain J=0-1 transitions in more than 20 vibrational levels of HCN, HNC, but no transitions in vinylidene or highly excited local-bender vibrational levels of acetylene. Reasons for the non-observation of the vinylidene co-product of HCN are discussed.Comment: Accepted by Faraday Discussion

Integrating Pacific research methodologies with Western social science research methods: quantifying Pentecostalism’s effects on Fijian relationality

    Get PDF
This paper discusses the attempts of two academics of European descent (one English, one American) who both lived and researched in Fiji for a number of years to develop a longitudinal quantitative research project examining the socio-economics of religious change in this Pacific nation. We explain how specific data gathering techniques and recent statistical advances in network analysis may offer novel means for documenting and visualising the relational ontologies of Pacific life. In quantifying the ‘space between’ individuals in Fijian villages and informal settlements by recording the flow of resources, labour and social support, over time and across the community as a whole, the data captures the relational dynamics of Fijian social life. Thus, this intended study seeks to reveal the relative socioeconomic effects of intra-Christian conversion, namely the rapid growth of Pentecostalism, on Fijian practices of reciprocity and sharing. We also consider the ethical implications and the suitability of longitudinal methods for research in the Pacific and how they may be strengthened and contextualised by attention to Pacific Research Methodologies scholarship
