    Student Experiences with Diversity and Inclusion in Technology Design Courses

    Technology design education does not yet teach students how to effectively avoid embedding their unconscious social and cultural biases into artifacts they design and build, despite widespread critical examination of the social impact of technology. Unintended consequences that exclude or discriminate against people as they use technology reflect an inability to acknowledge diversity and inclusion topics as integral to technology design. Through a national survey, this exploratory study examined the attitudes of 115 students studying Computer Science, Information Science, User-Centered-Design and related disciplines, yielding insights into their classroom experiences; receptiveness to and concerns about engaging in discussions of equity, diversity and inclusion; and interest in addressing these issues in their own designs. These findings inform a set of proposed curricular interventions that incorporate ethics, equity, and bias into technology design courses as a supplement to traditional lectures introducing basic diversity and inclusion concepts

    Lower Extremity Muscle Strength and Risk of Self-Reported Hip or Knee Osteoarthritis

    Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the gender-specific longitudinal association between quadriceps strength and self-reported, physician-diagnosed hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: Subjects were 3081 community-dwelling adults who were free of OA, joint symptoms and injuries, completed a maximum treadmill exercise test, had isokinetic knee extension and flexion and isotonic leg press strength measurements taken at baseline and returned at least one written follow-up survey. Multivariate logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Results: Women with moderate or high isokinetic quadriceps strength had a significantly reduced risk (55% to 64%) of hip or knee OA. A similar, nonsignificant trend was noted among men. Moderate isotonic leg press strength was protective for hip or knee osteoarthritis among men only. Conclusions: These results suggest that quadriceps weakness is an independent and modifiable risk factor for lower extremity OA, particularly among women

    Gaseous fission product release during storage at various temperatures for HTGR-type fuels

    Measurements were made of gaseous fission product releases from an HTGR-type fuel body under conditions simulating storage at temperatures up to 300/sup 0/C. The fuel was a recycle test element containing BISO-BISO coated fuel particles which had been irradiated for 701 effective full-power days in the Peach Bottom HTGR. Storage test temperatures were ambient (about 30/sup 0/C), 100, 150, 200, and 300/sup 0/C. The initial release rates of /sup 85/Kr varied after each change in temperature. A fairly stable release rate was reached that increased from approximately 60 ..mu..Ci/day at ambient temperature to approximately 1000 ..mu..Ci/day after 30 days at 200/sup 0/C and slowly decreased to about 200 ..mu..Ci/day after 554 days at 200/sup 0/C. In the experiment at 300/sup 0/C, a final release rate of 4000 ..mu..Ci/day was attained after 66 days. The releases of /sup 85/Kr were followed for about two and one-half years. The stabilized release rates for /sup 3/H were approximately 0.02 ..mu..Ci/day at ambient temperature, approximately 0.750 ..mu..Ci/day at 200/sup 0/C after 30 days, and 0.460 ..mu..Ci/day after 554 days. The final release rate at 300/sup 0/C was about 30 ..mu..Ci/day after 66 days.Over the lifetime of the experiment, approximately 22% of the initial /sup 85/Kr inventory was evolved and swept out, and approximately 4% of the initial /sup 3/H inventory was evolved and swept out. The activation energies calculated for the Kr and /sup 3/H evolution were approximately 7.8 kcal/mole and approximately 12.4 kcal/mole, respectively

    MAPK-Dependent Regulation of IL-1-and β-Adrenoreceptor-Induced Inflammatory Cytokine Production From Mast Cells: Implications for the Stress Response

    Background: Catecholamines, such as epinephrine, are elaborated in stress responses, and mediate vasoconstriction to cause elevation in systemic vascular resistance and blood pressure. Our previous study has shown that IL-1 can induce mast cells to produce proinflammatory cytokines which are involved in atherogenesis. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of epinephrine on IL-1-induced proatherogenic cytokine production from mast cells. Results: Two ml of HMC-1 (0.75 × 106 cells/ml) were cultured with epinephrine (1 × 10-5 M) in the presence or absence of IL-1β (10 ng/ml) for 24 hrs. HMC-1 cultured alone produced none to trace amounts of IL-6, IL-8, and IL-13. IL-1β significantly induced production of these cytokines in HMC-1, while epinephrine alone did not. However, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-13 production induced by IL-1β were significantly enhanced by addition of epinephrine. The enhancing effect appears to involve NF-κB and p38 MAPK pathways. Flow cytometry showed the presence of β1 and β2 adrenoreceptors on resting mast cells. The enhancing effect of proatherogenic cytokine production by epinephrine was down regulated by the β1 and β2 adrenoceptor antagonist, propranolol, but not by the β1 adrenoceptor antagonist, atenolol, suggesting the effect involved β2 adrenoceptors. The enhancing effect of epinephrine on proatherogenic cytokine production was also down regulated by the immunosuppressive drug, dexamethasone. Conclusions: These results not only confirm that an acute phase cytokine, IL-1β, regulates mast cell function, but also show that epinephrine up regulates the IL-1β induction of proatherogenic cytokines in mast cells. These data provide a novel role for epinephrine, a stress hormone, in inflammation and atherogenesis
