    Temporal variations in the wind and wave climate at a location in the eastern Arabian Sea based on ERA-Interim reanalysis data

    Temporal variations in wind speed and significant wave height (SWH) at a location in the eastern Arabian Sea are studied using ERA-Interim reanalysis data from 1979 to 2012. A shallow water location is selected for the study since measured buoy data are available close to the location for comparison with the reanalysis data. The annual mean wind speed shows a statistically significant decreasing trend of 1.5 cm s<sup>−1</sup> year<sup>−1</sup>, whereas a statistically insignificant increasing trend of 3.6 cm s<sup>−1</sup> year<sup>−1</sup> is observed for annual maximum wind speed due to the local events that altered the trend in annual maximum wind speed. Weakening of SWH during one of the peak monsoon months (August) is identified from the monthly analysis of SWH, which shows a higher upward trend in SWH during the southwest monsoon period, with an exception during August. The annual mean SWH shows a slight upward trend (0.012 cm year<sup>−1</sup>), whereas a larger upward trend (1.4 cm year<sup>−1</sup>) is observed for annual maximum SWH. Both identified trends are statistically insignificant. The influence of tropical cyclone activity is also studied and it is found that the maximum SWH and wind speed during 1996 are directly related to the cyclonic event

    The army worm Spodoptera mauritia is one of the major pests of paddy which is widely distributed in the Indian subcontinent, East and southern Asia and in the Australian region. Generally the army worms infest paddy crops of less than 20-25 days old. They are gregarious, defoliating the paddy and move from one field to other in large number like an army. The classification of Spodoptera species is mainly based on the structure of the male genitalia, antenna and the colour pattern of the wing. Here we report the partial coding sequence of cytochrome oxidase sub-unit I (COI) sequence of army worm isolated from Kerala, India which is identical to that isolated from Japan.     Cascading ecological effects from local extirpation of an ecosystem engineer in the Arava desert

    The extinction of a single species from a local community may carry little cost in terms of species diversity, yet its loss eliminates its biotic and abiotic interactions. We describe such a scenario in the Arava desert, where different cultural and law enforcement practices exclude Dorcas gazelles (Gazella dorcas (Linnaeus, 1758)) from the Jordanian side of the border while protecting their populations on the Israeli side. We found that gazelles break the soil crust, formed in desert systems after annual flooding, thereby creating patches of loose and cooler sand that are used by pit-building antlions (Neuroptera: Myrmeleontidae). When we artificially broke the soil crust on both sides of the border, we found a significant increase in antlion density in these patches, but only on the Israeli side. On the Jordanian side, where no gazelles have been observed since the early 1980s, no antlions colonized either control or manipulated plots. Additional choice/no-choice feeding experiments, in which we offered antlions to lizards and birds, revealed that the effect of humans on gazelles cascades farther, as antlions serve as a palatable food source for both groups. Thus, the human-mediated loss of nontrophic interactions between gazelles and antlions cascades to the loss of trophic interactions between antlions and their predators

    Spotted fever group rickettsiae in ticks collected from wild animals in Israel

    We report molecular evidence for the presence of spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFGR) in ticks collected from roe deer, addax, red foxes, and wild boars in Israel. Rickettsia aeschlimannii was detected in Hyalomma marginatum and Hyalomma detritum while Rickettsia massiliae was present in Rhipicephalus turanicus ticks. Furthermore, a novel uncultured SFGR was detected in Haemaphysalis adleri and Haemaphysalis parva ticks from golden jackals. The pathogenicity of the novel SFGR for humans is unknown; however, the presence of multiple SFGR agents should be considered when serological surveillance data from Israel are interpreted because of significant antigenic cross-reactivity among Rickettsia. The epidemiology and ecology of SFGR in Israel appear to be more complicated than was previously believed. Copyright © 2011 by The American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene

    Prion Disease and the Innate Immune System

    Prion diseases or transmissible spongiform encephalopathies are a unique category of infectious protein-misfolding neurodegenerative disorders. Hypothesized to be caused by misfolding of the cellular prion protein these disorders possess an infectious quality that thrives in immune-competent hosts. While much has been discovered about the routing and critical components involved in the peripheral pathogenesis of these agents there are still many aspects to be discovered. Research into this area has been extensive as it represents a major target for therapeutic intervention within this group of diseases. The main focus of pathological damage in these diseases occurs within the central nervous system. Cells of the innate immune system have been proven to be critical players in the initial pathogenesis of prion disease, and may have a role in the pathological progression of disease. Understanding how prions interact with the host innate immune system may provide us with natural pathways and mechanisms to combat these diseases prior to their neuroinvasive stage. We present here a review of the current knowledge regarding the role of the innate immune system in prion pathogenesis

    Parental health limitations, caregiving and loneliness among women with widowed parents: longitudinal eveidence from France

    We investigate how daughters’ feelings of loneliness are impacted when widowed parents develop health limitations, and when daughters take on personal care tasks in response. Using longitudinal data from daughters of widowed parents drawn from the French Family and Intergenerational Relationships Study (ERFI, 1485 observations nested in 557 daughters), we assess (a) whether health limitations of widowed parents are associated with daughters’ feelings of loneliness regardless of whether or not daughters provide personal care and (b) whether there is an effect of care provision on loneliness that cannot be explained by parental health limitations. Fixed effect regression analyses show that widowed parents’ health limitations were associated with raised feelings of loneliness among their daughters. No significant additional effect of providing personal care to a widowed parent was found. Prior research on the impact of health limitations of older parents on the lives of their adult–children has focused mostly on issues related to informal caregiving. Our findings suggest that more attention to the psychosocial impact of parental health limitations—net of actual caregiving—on adult children’s lives is warranted
