    Get PDF
This paper aims to investigate the nexus between financial integration and the real economy in ASEAN + 3 economies based on the concept of Solow-Growth Model. The equity indices as a proxy for financial markets are collected from each ASEAN + 3 members and are segmented between two periods; before and after the financial cooperation agreement period. The finding presents several outcomes; 1) no cointegration nexus is found in the system during the pre-agreement periods; 2) the markets are found cointegrated during the post-agreement period, 3) financial integration is found to influence the real sectors of ASEAN + 3 economies. Finally, this study offers policy implications to improve financial integration for stabilizing the real economy

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine the nexus between Asian and the US short-term financing rates and compare them between pre- and post-Asian financial crisis. Design/methodology/approach: The short-term financing rate is used in the estimation by employing two-stage cointegration test. Findings: The result of the empirical study shows several outcomes; the short-term financing rates among the selected Asian countries are not highly correlated during pre-crisis period, but the rates become strongly associated during the post-crisis period. The US financing rate has significant influence on the Asian rate during both periods. Asian financing rates are not integrated by the influence of the USA, rather regional cooperation and financial initiatives lead the regional financing rate to be integrated. Originality/value: The empirical finding of the study offers significant policy implications for strengthening regional economic bonding and developing the financial systems. © 2019, Emerald Publishing Limited

    Get PDF
A taxonomic revision of Pteris in Peninsular Malaysia was carried out from January 2006 to July 2007. Fifteen species of Pteris has been examined. This study was conducted to document all available taxa of Pteris, to investigate possible wrongly named or unnamed species of Pteris, and develop a dichotomous key from morphological, anatomical and spore ultrastructure characteristics. Materials for this study were obtained from both the field and herbarium collection. Pteris specimens deposited in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKMB), Universiti Malaya (KLU), Forest Research Institute Malaysia (KEP), and Singapore Herbarium (SING) were identified and annotated for the morphological studies. Fern specimens were also collected from several states in Peninsular Malaysia such including N.Sembilan, Perak, and Johor for the anatomical studies using light microscope to observe the shape of vascular bundle. Spore of Pteris was examined using scanning electron microscope to obtain the surface ornamentation. From this study, P. multifida Poir. was recorded as new record to Peninsular Malaysia, and two species were reported as rare and the rest of the species were common in Peninsular Malaysia. Pteris grows terrestrially in more or less shaded locations, open places and on all type of soils. Pteris also grow on old buildings such as P. vittata and in rock-crevices such as P. multifida. Morphological studies including frond architectures and study of anatomy stipe were conducted, as they are taxonomically significant for deliminating species within Pteris. Four types of frond architectures were observed. There are simple pinnate, bipinnate, bipinnatifid and tripinatifid. Mainly two types of venation were encountered within the genus Pteris in Peninsular Malaysia. The two types of veins are free veins and simple anastomosing. The stipe anatomy reveals that Pteris has hipposcampus-shaped bundle in the stele. Sori of Pteris produced at the back side of the lamina and elongated along the margins of the pinnae, but not quite reaching the base of apex and covering by false indusium. The shape of the spores of the Pteris was recognized as the triangular type which could be seen both in the light microscope and scanning electron microscope. The spores of the genus Pteris can be segregated into five different groups based on the variations in the surface structure of the spore. The surface structure of the spore of the Pteris was baculate, costate, verrucate, rugulate, and tuberculate

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the validation of the ASEAN+3 financial cooperation agreement among its members. In particular, it examines the long- and short-run relationships among the stock market indices of eight countries: China (CH), Japan (JP),Korea (KR), Malaysia (MY), Indonesia (ID), Philippines (PH), Thailand (TH), and Singapore (SG). Design/methodology/approach: The study applied a global VAR and vector error correction model (VECM) model to investigate this relationship using daily data over the period from first March 1992 to end of September 2013. The study period has been separated into pre-1997/1998 financial crisis period (1992-1997) and post-1997/1998 crisis period (1999-2013). Findings: The findings show that the stock markets in the ASEAN region are integrated during both periods of financial crises. However, the markets are moving toward better integration, particularly during the post-crisis period. This is supported by the results of the error correction which indicated that most ASEAN+3 stock market indices adjust quickly within the short run to a shock in the long-run equilibrium relationships in the region during both the pre- and post-crisis periods. In addition, the results of the VECM causality test showed that a short-run relationship exists among the ASEAN+3 stock market indices. Practical implications: The results of this study therefore have two implications: first, for investors in terms of construction of the portfolio diversification strategies across difference stock markets in Asian region, and second, for policy makers, as the study presents an understanding of financial exposure in their countries as consequences of changes that occur in the other stock market indices in the ASEAN region. Social implications: The investors can find the potential sectors for the portfolio investments. Originality/value: The paper is one of the pioneers to examine the validity of ASEAN+3 financial cooperation agreement. © 2017, © Emerald Publishing Limited

This paper is on the preservation and conservation of the archival materials'. An archive is well known as one of the world's primary information sources. Besides, preservation is the activities associated with maintaining and restoring archival materials for continued access, either in their original physical form or in some other usable state. Meanwhile conservation is the use of chemical and physical procedures in treatment or storage to ensure the preservation of books, manuscripts, records, other documents in order to slow their decay and damage. The presentation in the archives is done by providing proper environmental conditions, storage facilities and appropriate packaging materials in order to protect the records from any damage. On the other hand, conservation is done by using chemicals and professional repair techniques to prevent the further deterioration of the records. It is not limited to paper based documents only, archivist also need consider preserving and conserving records in digital format There are various forms of archival materials such as parchment, vellum, manuscript, microfilm, slide, photograph, machine readable records, and tapes. All these materials need to be preserved and conserved in a right way in order to make it available for continued access

    Get PDF
Boesenbergia rotunda or Temu kunci is a herb belonging to the Zingiberaceae family and wildly cultivated in Malaysia by rhizome. Temu kunci rhizome is commonly used in traditional medicines to cure stomach aches, promote appetite and gout. Due to its potential to be developed as one of Malaysia’s herbal products, information on their agronomic requirements is needed. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the different combination of the growing medium on B. rotunda growth and yield. Topsoil, peat moss, sand and chicken manure with four different ratios have been used as a planting medium. The potted plant was arranged in a randomised, complete block design with five replicates. The growth parameter was measured during harvesting time. The results showed that there was no significant difference in plant height, number of leaves, tiller number, fresh and dry shoot weight and fresh and dry root and rhizome weight in all treatments. It can be argued that this is because B. rotunda can be grown in different kinds of planting medium. Based on this study, it was suggested that topsoil be used for Temu Kunci planting, since it is easily obtained and requires less money
