Proximate and fatty acid (FA) composition of different parts and sexes of ray (Raja clavata) were compared. Significant differences usually occurred (p<0.05) between liver samples and others body parts. The highest moisture, protein and ash contents were found for pectoral fin 78.56, 20.52 and 1.21%, respectively while fat content represented liver as 39.71%. Sexual differences were also found for both proximate and FA values. The levels of saturated (SFA) , monounsaturated (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) varied as 27.65-32.10%, 14.93-19.01% and 34.29-39.50% in total FAME, respectively. The highest PUFA and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) values were observed in edible portion of liver for both sexes due to high contents of fat content despite the low values as % total FAME in comparison with other body parts. On the other hand, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) levels were found to be high in both calculated situation for liver samples. Significant variations among FA levels were observed for different body parts (p<0.05). The highest DHA and EPA values were in edible portion of liver were calculated as 6818 and 2331 mg/100 g, respectively indicating the importance of utilizing liver for this species

BACKGROUND: In metropolitans, where public transportation is used extensively, bus drivers are one of the occupational groups with a high risk of contracting COVID-19. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the difference between the clinical status of a group of bus drivers and field officers with COVID-19 on public transportation lines in Istanbul. METHODS: The study was conducted with 477 male volunteer participants. COVID-19 was confirmed through a positive nasopharyngeal culture sample using the real-time PCR test. Demographic information, biochemical parameters, clinical status, and the use of nutritional supplements were compared between those who recovered from COVID-19 at home or in the hospital. RESULTS: The body mass indexes (BMI) of 83.9% of individuals was above normal and 75.4% were treated for the disease at home. There were significant differences in terms of age, BMI, weight loss, smoking, use of nutritional supplements, blood glucose levels and vitamin B12 values. However, there was no significant difference between the types of nutritional supplements used or other biochemical parameters. CONCLUSION: It was determined that those who survived the disease at home were younger and had a lower BMI. It is important for both individuals and for general public health to create healthy working environments, especially for bus drivers, who have a high risk of COVID-19 contamination and transmission due to their long exposure time

KORAL, SERKAN/0000-0001-7424-2481; Kose, Sevim/0000-0001-6029-0458WOS: 000377012900006This study investigates the effect of using ice in combination with refrigeration on the sensory, physico-chemical and microbiological attributes of spotless shad during storage. Spotless shad kept in ice under refrigerated conditions had better sensory, physicochemical and microbiological quality as compared with control groups. the shelf life of samples kept at ambient temperature without ice was 2 days. Using ice and refrigeration only extended the shelf-life for 3 days and 4 days, respectively, while ice application with refrigeration further increased the shelf-life by 10 days. Physico-chemical and microbiological results usually supported sensory values. Histamine values were below EU (European Union) and FDA permitted levels for the shelf-life of fish

The Colorado potato beetle (CPB), Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is one of the most important pests of potatoes and causes great losses in potato production worldwide. Chemical insecticides are primarily used to control this pest, but this has rapidly caused insecticide resistance. In this study, 24 entomopathogenic fungi were obtained from 43 soil samples in potato fields and identified by ITS gene sequencing. Nine of the isolates were identified as Beauveriabassiana (Bals.) Vuill and 15 as Metarhizium sp. All fungal isolates were first tested against the adults and larvae of CPB under laboratory conditions. The most effective isolate was determined as B. bassiana SK-8 with 86% mortality and mycosis against adults, and 100% mortality and 80% mycosis against larvae. Therefore, isolate SK-8 was further characterized by phylogenetic analysis using bloc, rpb1 and tef gene sequences and this also confirmed that the isolate SK-8 was B. bassiana. B. bassiana SK-8 was finally tested against adults and larvae of CPB under field conditions. LC50 values were estimated as 3.42 x 10(6) and 1.15 x 10(7) conidia ml(-1) for adults and larvae, respectively. LC90 values were estimated as 1.12 x 10(9) and 4.08 x 10(10) conidia ml(-1) for adults and larvae, respectively. Consequently, B. bassiana SK-8 seems to be a promising biocontrol control agent against CPB

Takayasu’s arteritis (TA) is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects large vessels, predominantly the aorta and its main branches, leading to vessel wall thickening, fibrosis and stenosis. Cardiac and vascular symptoms are also commonly present at disease onset. In TA with thoracic or abdominal involvement, although murmur can be present at physical examination, the pulse difference may be absent. Here, we report a case of TA who initially resembled infective endocarditis and had widespread thoracic murmur

Ayrıca bu çalışmada biyojenik amin gelişiminin yavaşladığı gözlemlendiği için, bu tür örneklerde donmuş depolama sayesinde histaminden kaynaklı sağlık riski azalacaktırSmoking is a traditional preserving method used for both fish and meat products around the world. Smoked fish products have wide acceptance today due to their accustomed taste and aroma as well as their extended shelf-life. In this study, we aimed to determine quality changes and shelf-life of wild hot-smoked Mediterranean horse mackerel (Trachurus mediterraneus, Steindachner, 1868) during frozen storage (-20±2ºC) in comparison with its cultured counterparts. After gutting, cleaning and draining the samples, they were salted in 10% brine solution for 1 h and hot smoked within the same day. The samples were placed in styrofoam plates covered with a stretched film and frozen at -40?C for 24 h. Then, all samples were stored at -20±2ºC until spoilage. Chemical, microbiological and sensory analyses were performed monthly to investigate their quality changes and the shelf stability of the products. The results of total volatile basic-nitrogen, thiobarbituric acid and trimethylamine were obtained within the acceptable levels. Histamine values were found well below the permitted limits set by Food and Drug Administration and European Union. Sensory results showed that both storage groups (wild and cultured) had 7 months of shelf-life. This study showed that hot-smoked wild and cultured horse mackerel can be stored at -20±2ºC for 7 months. Culturing did not make any significant differences (P<0.05) in sensory quality despite of differences in chemical and microbiological changes between wild and cultured groups during storage. On the other hand, better consumer acceptance was observed for cultured samples indicating the advantage of culturing this species for a better market value. We also observed that frozen storage can retard the formation of biogenic amine contents and therefore, it is suggested to apply for such products to avoid histamine health ris

Purpose: To evaluate the effects of laser retinopexy in retinal breaks and the recurrence cases.Materials and Methods: 45 eyes of 25 patients who underwent laser retinopexy in retinal breaks between the period of July 2009 and January 2013 are included. All the breaks and suspicious areas for possible breaks are treated with laser photocoagulation. The breaks were surrounded with three rows of laser spots. After the routine controls, the patients are called every 6 months and advised to come immediately to our clinic if new flashing or floaters occur. Results: The patients were followed-up for an average period of 29.65 ± 10.45 months. New breaks were treated again and evaluated for the possible reasons. We found in three patients new breaks after an average period of 27.33 ± 2.03 months. No specifications are observed in these subjects. Conclusion: Retinal breaks can occur even a long time after. It is not known why this process is progressing and new tears develop. For this reason, patients who underwent a laser therapy because of retinal breaks should followed-up for a lifetime. We advise that, unsymptomatic patients who underwent laser retinopexy, should be examined every 6 months and every new complaint of flashing and big floaters should be carefully taken into consideration to prevent retinal detachments. Keywords: Laser retinopexy, posterior vitreous detachment, retinal break

Objective Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a common neurological disorder that affects patients’ sleep, emotional state and daily life negatively. In this study it was aimed to determine the sleep quality, daytime sleepiness and depression frequency in patients with RLS and their relation with duration and severity of illness. Materials and Methods In our center, 41 patients with primary RLS diagnosis were included in the study. Patients were divided into groups as mild, moderate, severe and very severe, according to the RLS severity scale of the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and Beck Depression Inventory were filled in by all the patients, including identity and sociodemographic data with illness information. Statistical analysis was performed among groups divided according to disease severity. Depressive symptoms of the disease duration and its relation with sleep problems were investigated. Results In this study 41 patients, 30 (73.2%) female, 11 (26.8%) male, were included. Of the patients participating in the study, 2 patients (4.9%) had mild RLS while 7 (17.1%) were very severely ill. Fourteen patients (34.1%) had moderate disease and 18 (43.9%) had severe disease. Bad sleep quality was found in 68.3% (n=28) of patients with RLS, excessive daytime sleepiness in 14.6% (n=6) severe depression in 7.3% (n=3) and totally 29.3% of patients (n=12) depressive symptoms were observed. As the severity of illness increased, sleep quality deteriorated and depressive symptoms increased (p<0.01). Conclusion Most of the RLS patients had poor sleep quality, a significant amount of daytime excessive sleepiness, and about one third of them had depression. As the duration and severity of the disease increases, the intensity of depressive symptoms increases. Remembering that RLS may have serious consequences and effective treatment of depression when accompanied should be planned without losing time

Objective Arterial spin labeling (ASL) is a relatively new imaging modality in the field of the cognitive neuroscience. In the present study, we aimed to compare the dynamic regional cerebral blood flow alterations of children with ADHD and healthy controls during a neurocognitive task by using event-related ASL scanning. Methods The study comprised of 17 healthy controls and 20 children with ADHD. The study subjects were scanned on 3 Tesla MRI scanner to obtain ASL imaging data. Subjects performed go/no-go task during the ASL image acquisition. The image analyses were performed by FEAT (fMRI Expert Analysis Tool) Version 6. Results The mean age was 10.88 +/- 1.45 and 11 +/- 1.91 for the control and ADHD group, respectively (p = .112). The go/no-go task was utilized during the ASL scanning. The right anterior cingulate cortex (BA32) extending into the frontopolar and orbitofrontal cortices (BA10 and 11) displayed greater activation in ADHD children relative to the control counterparts (p < .001). With a lenient significance threshold, greater activation was revealed in the right-sided frontoparietal regions during the go session, and in the left precuneus during the no-go session. Conclusion These results indicate that children with ADHD needed to over-activate frontopolar cortex, anterior cingulate as well as the dorsal and ventral attention networks to compensate for the attention demanded in a given cognitive task
