Symmetry breaking and the random-phase approximation in small quantum dots
The random-phase approximation has been used to compute the properties of
parabolic two-dimensional quantum dots beyond the mean-field approximation.
Special emphasis is put on the ground state correlation energy, the symmetry
restoration and the role of the spurious modes within the random-phase
approximation. A systematics with the Coulombic interaction strength is
presented for the 2-electron dot, while for the 6- and 12-electron dots
selected cases are discussed. The validity of the random-phase approximation is
assessed by comparison with available exact results.Comment: 9 pages, 4 embedded + 6 gif Figs. Published versio
Frequency noise cancellation in optomechanical systems for ponderomotive squeezing
Ponderomotive squeezing of the output light of an optical cavity has been
recently observed in the MHz range in two different cavity optomechanical
devices. Quadrature squeezing becomes particularly useful at lower spectral
frequencies, for example in gravitational wave interferometers, despite being
more sensitive to excess phase and frequency noise. Here we show a
phase/frequency noise cancellation mechanism due to destructive interference
which can facilitate the production of ponderomotive squeezing in the kHz range
and we demonstrate it experimentally in an optomechanical system formed by a
Fabry-P\'{e}rot cavity with a micro-mechanical mirror.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures. Physical explanation expanded. Modified figure
Far-infrared edge modes in quantum dots
We have investigated edge modes of different multipolarity sustained by
quantum dots submitted to external magnetic fields. We present a microscopic
description based on a variational solution of the equation of motion for any
axially symmetric confining potential and multipole mode. Numerical results for
dots with different number of electrons whose ground-state is described within
a local Current Density Functional Theory are discussed. Two sum rules, which
are exact within this theory, are derived. In the limit of a large neutral dot
at B=0, we have shown that the classical hydrodynamic dispersion law for edge
waves \omega(q) \sim \sqrt{q \ln (q_0/q)} holds when quantum and finite size
effects are taken into account.Comment: We have changed some figures as well as a part of the tex
Design and fabrication of 3D-printed anatomically shaped lumbar cage for intervertebra disc (IVD) degeneration treatment
Spinal fusion is the gold standard surgical procedure for degenerative spinal conditions when conservative therapies have been unsuccessful in rehabilitation of patients. Novel strategies are required to improve biocompatibility and osseointegration of traditionally used materials for lumbar cages. Furthermore, new design and technologies are needed to bridge the gap due to the shortage of optimal implant sizes to fill the intervertebral disc defect. Within this context, additive manufacturing technology presents an excellent opportunity to fabricate ergonomic shape medical implants. The goal of this study is to design and manufacture a 3D-printed lumbar cage for lumbar interbody fusion. Optimisations of the proposed implant design and its printing parameters were achieved via in silico analysis. The final construct was characterised via scanning electron microscopy, contact angle, x-ray micro computed tomography (μCT), atomic force microscopy, and compressive test. Preliminary in vitro cell culture tests such as morphological assessment and metabolic activities were performed to access biocompatibility of 3D-printed constructs. Results of in silico analysis provided a useful platform to test preliminary cage design and to find an optimal value of filling density for 3D printing process. Surface characterisation confirmed a uniform coating of nHAp with nanoscale topography. Mechanical evaluation showed mechanical properties of final cage design similar to that of trabecular bone. Preliminary cell culture results showed promising results in terms of cell growth and activity confirming biocompatibility of constructs. Thus for the first time, design optimisation based on computational and experimental analysis combined with the 3D-printing technique for intervertebral fusion cage has been reported in a single study. 3D-printing is a promising technique for medical applications and this study paves the way for future development of customised implants in spinal surgical applications
Density of States for a Specified Correlation Function and the Energy Landscape
The degeneracy of two-phase disordered microstructures consistent with a
specified correlation function is analyzed by mapping it to a ground-state
degeneracy. We determine for the first time the associated density of states
via a Monte Carlo algorithm. Our results are described in terms of the
roughness of the energy landscape, defined on a hypercubic configuration space.
The use of a Hamming distance in this space enables us to define a roughness
metric, which is calculated from the correlation function alone and related
quantitatively to the structural degeneracy. This relation is validated for a
wide variety of disordered systems.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter

An integrated software system for geometric correction of LANDSAT MSS imagery
A system for geometrically correcting LANDSAT MSS imagery includes all phases of processing, from receiving a raw computer compatible tape (CCT) to the generation of a corrected CCT (or UTM mosaic). The system comprises modules for: (1) control of the processing flow; (2) calculation of satellite ephemeris and attitude parameters, (3) generation of uncorrected files from raw CCT data; (4) creation, management and maintenance of a ground control point library; (5) determination of the image correction equations, using attitude and ephemeris parameters and existing ground control points; (6) generation of corrected LANDSAT file, using the equations determined beforehand; (7) union of LANDSAT scenes to produce and UTM mosaic; and (8) generation of output tape, in super-structure format
EFSUMB Recommendations and Guidelines for Gastrointestinal Ultrasound - Part 1: Examination Techniques and Normal Findings (Short version)
Abstract

In October 2014 the European Federation of Societies
for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology formed
a Gastrointestinal Ultrasound (GIUS) task force
group to promote the use of GIUS in a clinical setting.
One of the main objectives of the task force
group was to develop clinical recommendations
and guidelines for the use of GIUS under the auspices
of EFSUMB. The first part, gives an overview of
the examination techniques for GIUS recommended
by experts in the field. It also presents the
current evidence for the interpretation of normal
sonoanatomical and physiological features as examined
with different ultrasound modalities
