Les juifs marocains dans l'Archipel des Acores - début d'une nouvelle mentalité commerciale : l'exemple des Bensaude

The arrival of the Jews in the Azores took place between the end of 1818 and the beginning of 1819. From the 1830's onwards their commercial success was starling due to a greater commercial aggressivity. This commercial success was linked to their ability to expand new lines of business, their experience in handling money, bills of exchange and other sophisticated accounting methods. Neither were they put off by long journeys, nor by selling on credit and their complex network of business contacts all contributed to the rapid settling of Jews in the archipelago in the 19th century. Although they were not resented by the local population, this commercial success, with the exception of the Bensaude family, was relatively short-lived due to stiff local competition and led to the departure of the few remaining merchants from the archipelago after the second world war

Role of rpoS in the regulation of glyoxalase III in Escherichia coli.

Methylglyoxal is an endogenous electrophile produced in Escherichia coli by the enzyme methylglyoxal synthase to limit the accumulation of phosphorylated sugars. In enteric bacteria methylglyoxal is detoxified by the glutathione-dependent glyoxalase I/II system, by glyoxalase III, and by aldehyde reductase and alcohol dehydrogenase. Here we demonstrate that glyoxalase III is a stationary-phase enzyme. Its activity reached a maximum at the entry into the stationary phase and remained high for at least 20 h. An rpoS- mutant displayed normal glyoxalase I and II activities but was unable to induce glyoxalase III in stationary phase. It thus appears that glyoxalase III is regulated by rpoS and might be important for survival of non-growing E. coli cultures

Thermoanalytical study of inner and outer residue of coffee harvest

The better use of agricultural residues is expected, when they are mostly disposed of improperly and it is often burned in the natural environment. This study of the thermal decomposition of residues was performed from the coffee crop for energy purposes and in this case was used thermal analysis techniques for such assessment. the TG/DTG and DSC curves showed that the thermal decomposition occurs in four consecutive events and it is predominantly exothermic. the first mass loss evidenced in TG/DTG curves has an endothermic peak in DSC curve, which it can be associated with the water liberation of the material. This first thermal event also can be related to the liberation of volatile compounds present in the sample, which is also corroborated by the endothermic peak. the other events of mass loss are related with the thermal decomposition of the material. This decomposition has an exothermic behavior, which is positively applied to the main aim of this scientific research: the coffee straw use like biomass energy font. the thermoanalytical techniques were satisfactory in the characterization of this material.IPEN CNEN SP, BR-05508000 São Paulo, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, São Paulo, BrazilUniv São Paulo, Inst Chem, São Paulo, BrazilFederal University of São Paulo, Campus Diadema, São Paulo, BrazilWeb of Scienc

    No full text
A new family of eight heterobimetallic Cu(i)-dppf complexes of general formula [Cu(dppf)L][BF4] with dppf = 1,1 '-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene and L representing N,N-, N,O- and N,S-heteroaromatic bidentate ligands have been synthesized and fully characterized by classical analytical, spectroscopic and electrochemical methods. The single crystal structures of [Cu(dppf)(pBI)][BF4] (6), [Cu(dppf)(dpytz)][BF4] (7) and [Cu(dppf)(5-Aphen)][BF4] (8) complexes (where pBI = 2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole, dpytz = 3-(2-pyridyl)-5,6-diphenyl-1,2,4-triazine and 5-Aphen = 1,10-phenanthrolin-5-amine) were determined by X-ray diffraction studies. Cytotoxicity of all complexes was evaluated in two human breast adenocarcinoma cell lines (MCF7 and MDAMB231). All the complexes exhibit high cytotoxicity against both human breast cancer cells with IC50 values far lower than those found for the antitumor drug cisplatin in the same cell lines. The IC50 values on primary healthy fibroblasts are of the same order of magnitude as those found for the tumoral cells.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

ZEB2 haploinsufficient Mowat-Wilson syndrome induced pluripotent stem cells show disrupted GABAergic transcriptional regulation and function

    No full text
Mowat-Wilson syndrome (MWS) is a severe neurodevelopmental disorder caused by heterozygous variants in the gene encoding transcription factor ZEB2. Affected individuals present with structural brain abnormalities, speech delay and epilepsy. In mice, conditional loss of Zeb2 causes hippocampal degeneration, altered migration and differentiation of GABAergic interneurons, a heterogeneous population of mainly inhibitory neurons of importance for maintaining normal excitability. To get insights into GABAergic development and function in MWS we investigated ZEB2 haploinsufficient induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) of MWS subjects together with iPSC of healthy donors. Analysis of RNA-sequencing data at two time points of GABAergic development revealed an attenuated interneuronal identity in MWS subject derived iPSC with enrichment of differentially expressed genes required for transcriptional regulation, cell fate transition and forebrain patterning. The ZEB2 haploinsufficient neural stem cells (NSCs) showed downregulation of genes required for ventral telencephalon specification, such as FOXG1, accompanied by an impaired migratory capacity. Further differentiation into GABAergic interneuronal cells uncovered upregulation of transcription factors promoting pallial and excitatory neurons whereas cortical markers were downregulated. The differentially expressed genes formed a neural protein-protein network with extensive connections to well-established epilepsy genes. Analysis of electrophysiological properties in ZEB2 haploinsufficient GABAergic cells revealed overt perturbations manifested as impaired firing of repeated action potentials. Our iPSC model of ZEB2 haploinsufficient GABAergic development thus uncovers a dysregulated gene network leading to immature interneurons with mixed identity and altered electrophysiological properties, suggesting mechanisms contributing to the neuropathogenesis and seizures in MWS
