    Ash Vaporization and Condensation During Combustion of a Suspended Coal Particle

    The results of a theoretical study of the formation and growth of the submicron flyash aerosol around a single burning coal particle are presented. The vaporization of ash and subsequent aerosol formation near the coal particle are studied because the local combustion environment influences these processes strongly. A mathematical model is developed that describes the transport of ash vapor and and the growth of the aerosol. The ash aerosol calculation is superimposed on an existing solution to the combustion problem. Included in the model are the effects of convective transport and of both homogeneous and heterogeneous condensation of the ash vapor. The results of the calculations show that refractory compounds with low surface tension, like silica, nucleate very near the coal particle's surface and produce a substantial mass loading of aerosol. The presence of the aerosol does not greatly affect the ash vaporization rate, which is primarily a function of combustion conditions. The size and amount of the submicron ash aerosol are determined by both the local combustion conditions and the ash's physical properties

    Loci Controlling Resistance to High Plains Virus and Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus in a B73 × Mo17 Population of Maize

    High Plains disease has the potential to cause significant yield loss in susceptible corn (Zea mays L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes, especially in the central and western USA. The primary causal agent, High Plains virus (HPV), is vectored by wheat curl mite (WCM; Aceria tossicheila Keifer), which is also the vector of wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV). In general, the two diseases occur together as a mixed infection in the field. The objective of this research was to characterize the inheritance of HPV and WSMV resistance using B73 (resistant to HPV and WSMV) × Mo17 (moderately susceptible to HPV and WSMV) recombinant inbred lines. A population of 129 recombinant inbred lines scored for 167 molecular markers was used to evaluate resistance to WSMV and to a mixed infection of WSMV and HPV. Loci conferring resistance to systemic movement of WSMV in plants mapped to chromosomes 3, 6, and 10, consistent with the map position of wsm2, wsm1, and wsm3, respectively. Major genes for resistance to systemic spread of HPV in doubly infected plants mapped to chromosomes 3 and 6, coincident or tightly linked with the WSMV resistance loci. Analysis of doubly infected plants revealed that chromosome 6 had a major effect on HPV resistance, consistent with our previous analysis of B73 × W64A and B73 × Wf9 populations. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting resistance to localized symptom development mapped to chromosomes 4 (umc66), 5 (bnl5.40), and 6 (umc85), and accounted for 24% of the phenotypic variation. Localized symptoms may reflect the amount of mite feeding or the extent of virus spread at the point of infection. Identification of cosegregating markers may facilitate selection for HPV and WSMV resistance in corn breeding programs

    Exploring young child feeding practices and perceptions in Tower Hamlets, with a focus on sugar World Nutrition

    Introduction: The aim of this qualitative research was to gain a greater understanding of the factors that influence young child feeding perceptions and practices in families with children under the age of five years old in London Borough of Tower Hamlets, in the context of rising childhood obesity levels in England. Methodology: The target group were mothers with children under five, mother in laws, service providers and carers. The participants were selected using purposeful, convenience and snowball sampling methods. Data were collected from 21 key informant interviews, 2 direct observations of health promotion sessions and 18 focus groups. The focus group discussions included 119 participants: 95 women who were mothers, 3 mother in laws and 21 service providers. A thematic analysis was used to identify four themes: knowledge not leading to changes, communication challenges, barriers to improving family healthy eating practices, and the lack of public health nutrition services. Findings: Knowledge had not led to behaviour change: Participants demonstrated high levels of knowledge on what constitutes healthy eating such as increasing the amount of fruit and vegetables their children eat while reducing sugar, salt and fat intake. Information was sought mainly from the internet, friends and family, but participants would prefer a one-to-one session with a health worker. Communication challenges: Misleading messages negatively affected food choices. Participants raised the problem of mixed messages regarding what was a healthy snack, as many food labels targeting young children carry misleading health claims such as “two of your five a day” or “organic,” despite having extremely high levels of sugar. Barriers to improving family healthy eating practices: The challenges experienced when trying to improve their children’s eating habits included the cost of healthy food options, the lack of time to buy and prepare healthy options, unhealthy treats given by family and friends, and the unhealthy takeaway food environment. Lack of public health nutrition services and support: There was a lack of clarity regarding who mothers and service providers should refer to regarding nutrition problems such as fussy eating, portion sizes, and diet diversity. Half of the early years’ service providers that were interviewed had no training on healthy eating guidelines, although training had been planned. Parents did not think the sugar tax would have a significant impact on the consumption of sugar or on childhood obesity levels

    Comparative Efficacy of Insecticides on Bactrocera tryoni and Zeugodacus cucumis (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Laboratory and Semifield Trials in Fruiting Vegetables

    In-field management of Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt) and Zeugodacus cucumis (French) (Diptera: Tephritidae) in fruiting vegetable crops has relied almost exclusively on organophosphate cover sprays. Laboratory and semifield trials were performed to compare a number of alternative insecticides for efficacy against these species. A novel semifield method was used whereby the insecticides were applied to crops as cover sprays under field conditions, and treated plants bearing fruit were transferred to large cages and exposed to fruit flies. Efficacy was assessed in terms of numbers of pupae developing from treated fruit. A laboratory cage method was also used to assess effects on adult mortality and comparative effects of 1- and 3-d-aged residues. The neonicotinoids clothianidin and thiacloprid were very effective against B. tryoni and Z. cucumis. Clothianidin was the only insecticide other than dimethoate to affect adult mortality. The synthetic pyrethroid alpha-cypermethrin was also very effective, particularly in semifield trials, although higher incidence of aphid and whitefly infestation was observed in this treatment compared to others. Cyantraniliprole was effective against B. tryoni, but less effective against Z. cucumis. Imidacloprid, bifenthrin, spinetoram, and abamectin were all relatively less effective, although all demonstrated a suppressive effect

    The domain of organizational cognitive neuroscience:theoretical and empirical challenges

    In this editorial, the authors respond to the 2011 article in the Journal of Management by Becker, Cropanzano, and Sanfey, titled “Organizational Neuroscience: Taking Organizational Theory Inside the Neural Black Box.” More specifically, the authors build on the ideas of Becker et al. first to clarify and extend their work and then to explore the critical philosophical issues involved in drawing inferences from neuroscientific research. They argue that these problems are yet to be solved and that organizational researchers who wish to incorporate neuroscientific advances into their work need to engage with them

    First E region observations of mesoscale neutral wind interaction with auroral arcs

    We report the first observations of E region neutral wind fields and their interaction with auroral arcs at mesoscale spatial resolution during geomagnetically quiet conditions at Mawson, Antarctica. This was achieved by using a scanning Doppler imager, which can observe thermospheric neutral line-of-sight winds and temperatures simultaneously over a wide field of view. In two cases, the background E region wind field was perpendicular to an auroral arc, which when it appeared caused the wind direction within ∌50 km of the arc to rotate parallel along the arc, reverting to the background flow direction when the arc disappeared. This was observed under both westward and eastward plasma convection. The wind rotations occurred within 7–16 min. In one case, as an auroral arc propagated from the horizon toward the local zenith, the background E region wind field became significantly weaker but remained unaffected where the arc had not passed through. We demonstrate through modeling that these effects cannot be explained by height changes in the emission layer. The most likely explanation seems to be the greatly enhanced ion drag associated with the increased plasma density and localized ionospheric electric field associated with auroral arcs. In all cases, the F region neutral wind appeared less affected by the auroral arc, although its presence is clear in the data

    The interaction between moist diabatic processes and the atmospheric circulation in African Easterly Wave propagation

    An objective tracking algorithm is used to characterise the three-dimensional structure of African EasterlyWaves (AEWs) in ERA-Interim reanalysis and a Met Office Unified Model (UM) simulation. A special focus is dedicated to the coupling of dynamical aspects of the wave and moist convection. The relation between baroclinic features of the wave and latent heating is explored. Latent heating at and slightly ahead of the wave trough is found to reinforce and sustain the anomalous wave circulation through potential vorticity (PV) generation and vortex stretching. The coupling of moist processes and the circulation takes place mainly through moisture convergence at lower mid-tropospheric levels, between 850 hPa and 500 hPa. These findings are confirmed and examined in more detail in a case study of a strong AEW based on high-resolution UM simulations. PV tracers are used to investigate how different moist diabatic processes invigorate the wave. Again moisture anomalies are found to be the main contributors to generating small-scale convergence centres and updrafts ahead of the trough at mid-tropospheric levels. Although buoyancy effects are ultimately responsible for the convective uplift, the results suggest that mesoscale circulations associated with the AEW dynamics are crucial in creating the small-scale moist static instabilities and vortices which are essential for the AEW maintenance. Boundary layer mixing and advection from the northern Sahel may create pockets of high-PV air around the trough in some instances, but this mechanism of wave sustainment needs further investigation
