Pomegranate peels and seeds as a source of phenolic compounds: effect of cultivar, by-product, and extraction solvent

The nutraceutical properties of Punica granatum L. are not restricted to the edible portion of the fruit but also to the peels and seeds, flowers, leaves, and tree bark. The recovery and valorization of the peel and seeds (ca. 50% of the whole fruit), besides the positive environmental impact, can be viewed as a source of natural bioactive compounds. Thus, the bioactive properties of extracts of pomegranate peel and seeds from Acco and Wonderful known cultivars, as well as of the novel Big Full cultivar, were evaluated. The dried and ground pomegranate by-products were submitted to a conventional solid/liquid extraction with ethanol/water mixtures (0%, 25%, 50%, and 75% of EtOH, v/v). The obtained extracts were characterized in terms of total phenolic compounds (TPC), total flavonoids (TF), and antioxidant activity (AA), determined by the DPPH radical scavenging activity and expressed as IC50 (half maximum inhibitory concentration). With the exception of the Acco cultivar, the extraction yield (EY) was higher for peels, whose extracts showed higher TPC, TF, and IC50 (lower AA). The extracts obtained from the by-products of the Big Full cultivar had a statistically higher overall bioactive potential (TPC: 0.36 mg GAE/mg extract; TF: 0.031 mg CATE/mg extract; IC50: 0.51 mg/mL) compared to the other two studied cultivars. Furthermore, the EY was enhanced by solvents richer in ethanol (50-75%), allowing obtaining extracts richer in TPC and TF with higher AA. GRAVIDEZ COMPLICADA COM OSTEOPOROSE IDIOPÁTICA TRANSITÓRIA E DERMATITE PAPULOSA

Este relato descreve o caso de uma paciente de 25 anos que, durante a primeira gravidez, desenvolveu Dermatite Papulosa (DPP) em paralelo osteoporose idioptica Transitria (OIT), sendo ambas doenas raras e com etiologias ainda mal esclarecidas. O diagnstico da DPP se deu por bipsia de tecido, enquanto que o da OIT foi feito por excluso. Seus sinais clnicos e radiolgicos iniciais podem simular os de necrose assptica, infeco ou neoplasia, entidades cujo diagnstico pode necessitar de mtodos invasivos. Neste trabalho so mostradas as diferenas clnicas e radiolgicas que levaram ao diagnstico da OIT, bem como, o tratamento indicado, uma vez que, estar atento aos sintomas iniciais desta doena pode poupar o paciente de procedimentos invasivos ou terapias desnecessrias

INTERAÇÃO ENTRE TRAÇO FALCIFORME E ALFA-TALASSEMIA: RELATO DE UM CASO NO NOROESTE DO PARANÁ

O trao falciforme associado alfa-talassemia (AS/-talassemia) uma caracterstica rara na populao do sul do Brasil. Em funo deste e de outros motivos, casos dessa interao so confundidos e muitas vezes subdiagnosticados como sendo de anemia ferropriva, o que pode levar pacientes a tratamentos desnecessrios e, muitas vezes prejudiciais sua sade. Este trabalho relata o caso de uma paciente de 80 anos de idade que, aps participar de um estudo populacional sobre incidncia de hemoglobinopatias, descobriu ser portadora da interao AS/-talassemia. At ento vinha recebendo tratamento para anemia ferropriva, apesar de no apresentar melhora. Este trabalho discute ainda como os ndices hematimtricos, associados aos achados eletroforticos, contriburam para um diagnstico diferencial da interao AS/-talassemia, o que pode auxiliar mdicos e profissionais da sade a um diagnstico mais preciso, visando melhoria da qualidade de vida do paciente e, consequentemente, a diminuio da incidncia destas doenas genticas na populao

The use of benzodiazepines and the mental health of women in prison : a cross‑sectional study

In this article we assessed the prevalence of benzodiazepine (BZD) use in women before and during imprisonment, as well as its related factors and association with symptoms of anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder in a quantitative, cross-sectional, analytical study of regional scope. Two female prisons in the Brazilian Prison System were included. Seventy-four women participated by completing questionnaires about their sociodemographic data, BZD use and use of other substances. These questionnaires included the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist–Civilian Version (PCL-C). Of the 46 women who reported no BZDs use before arrest, 29 (63%) began using BZDs during imprisonment (p < 0.001). Positive scores for PTSD, anxiety, and depression, as well as associations between BZD use during imprisonment and anxiety (p= 0.028), depression (p = 0.001) and comorbid anxiety and depression (p= 0.003) were found when a bivariate Poisson regression was performed. When a multivariate Poisson regression was performed for tobacco use, the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scales, BZD use was associated with depression (p= p = 0.008), with tobacco use (p = 0.012), but not with anxiety (p = 0.325). Imprisonment increases the psychological sufering of women, consequently increasing BZD use. Nonpharmacological measures need to be considered in the health care of incarcerated women

A SOCIABILIDADE ENTRE JOVENS ATRAVÉS DO HEAVY METAL

O presente trabalho pretende uma abordagem introdutória à socialização de jovens no estilo musical Heavy Metal. Partindo de questões postas pela Antropologia e a Sociologia à “juventude” enquanto questão social ou cultural, aborda a relação entre jovens e música da perspectiva da construção de “juventudes” e chega ao tema da socialização no “metal”. A partir de uma rápida introdução ao estilo Heavy Metal, propõe questões formuladas na relação entre juventude(s) e Metal, tais como a sensibilidade relacionada à escuta de sons “pesados”, a hierarquia interna ao universo dos fãs, a relativização da noção de “juventude” e a interação entre gerações de “metaleiros”.

Metal extremo: estética “pesada” no Black Metal

Sound is not easy theme to narrate being object fluid and difficult to be captured. In this research I describe and analyze elements that make up the style known as Black Metal, from sound to posters of shows, album covers, lyrics content, symbolism and shared aesthetic aspects that make this subgenre a relevant expression of the Metal. Initially, I take as my starting point my trajectory in Metal to describe how the like for Metal is building through experiences of shows and contact with subgenres that develop listening skills and build particular like within the genre Metal. In a second moment, I present the history of Black Metal with its controversial events and its aesthetic characteristics. Finally, through the ethnography of a show by the band juizforana Superius, I search to analyze these global Black Metal characteristics in a local context, with observations on the relations between public and musicians and the Black Metal scene of Juiz de Fora.O som não é matéria fácil de narrar sendo objeto fluído e difícil de ser captado. Nesta pesquisa descrevo e analiso elementos que compõem o estilo conhecido como Black Metal, desde o som até cartazes dos shows, capas de álbum, conteúdo das letras, simbolismo e aspectos estéticos compartilhados que fazem deste subgênero uma expressão relevante do Metal. Inicialmente, tomo como ponto de partida minha trajetória no Metal para descrever como o gosto pelo Metal vai se moldando através de experiências de shows e do contato com subgêneros que desenvolvem habilidades de escuta e constroem gostos particulares no interior do gênero Metal. Em um segundo momento, apresento a história do Black Metal com seus acontecimentos polêmicos e suas características estéticas. Por fim, através da etnografia de um show da banda juizforana Superius busco analisar essas caraterísticas globais do Black Metal em um âmbito local, com observações sobre as relações entre público e músicos e a cena Black Metal de Juiz de Fora

O ESTADO DA ARTE DA REPRESA RIBEIRÃO DAS LAJES

O Brasil é vulnerável às mudanças climáticas atuais e, mais ainda, às que se projetam para o futuro, especialmente quanto aos extremos climáticos. Diferentes regiões do país vivem hoje situações de desequilíbrio do clima, como aumento das secas, especialmente no semiárido gerando impactos na agricultura de subsistência e na saúde e perda da biodiversidade da caatinga. A Região Sudeste apresenta um aumento de 3 a 6ºC na temperatura com eventos extremos de chuva, seca com redução dos volumes dos mananciais hídricos que vem trazendo um grande impacto na população. Estes fatos fizeram com que as autoridades, verificassem, além da transposição das águas do Paraíba do Sul para a bacia do rio Guandu já existente, a possibilidade de haver uma nova transposição das águas do Paraíba do Sul como alternativa para o abastecimento de algumas cidades no Estado de São Paulo. Essa transposição parcial permitiria o incremento no abastecimento de 180 municípios daquele Estado. Hoje em dia os cariocas dependem das águas do rio Guandu e da transposição de mais de 60% das águas do rio Paraíba do Sul, que cede de suas águas para através das canalizações forçadas das usinas. O Sistema Light foi construído em 1952 e os rios Guandu, Ribeirão das Lajes e a transposição do rio Paraíba do Sul abastecem 80% das necessidades da população da Região Metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro A Represa do Ribeirão das Lajes é formada pelos Ribeirões Pires, da Prata e Machado, pelos Rio Piraí e Paraíba do Sul, e abrange terras dos municípios de Rio Claro e Piraí, no estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Pelo exposto, o presente trabalho teve por objetivo divulgar o papel da Represa do Ribeirão das Lajes na história do desenvolvimento do Estado do Rio de Janeiro e a sua atual situação mediante ações antrópicas e das mudanças climáticas, assim como suas interações, no abastecimento da população carioca e fluminense
