Abcessos Hepáticos Recidivantes Provocados por Klebsiella Pneumoniae num Homem Diabético Não Asiático
The Klebsiella pneumoniae invasive syndrome, first described in Asia, is being reported in other parts of the world. It causes liver abcsesses, with or without extrahepatic lesions. Diabetes mellitus is the most common hosts’ underlying condition. It’s frequent among asian people, even outside Asia, appearing to exist genetic factors, not yet established, increasing the risk.
We present a case of a 55-year-old portuguese white diabetic man, who had a previous hospital admittion due to Klebsiella penumoniae pneumonia and a two-week latter diagnosis of liver abcsess. 4 years latter he was readmitted with nausea, chills, fever and myalgias. He had elevated inflammatory markers and the CT-scan showed 2 liver abscesses. Klebsiella pneumoniae was isolated in blood and antibiotics were given with complete clinical and imaging resolution. We present this case of relapsing Klebsiella pneumonia liver abscesses in a non-asian man emphasizing the growing incidence of this condition in Europe.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Cerebral Abscess in a Patient with Rendu-Osler-Weber
A telangiectasia hemorrágica hereditária é uma doença familiar rara, descrita pela primeira vez no final do século 19, caracterizada por telangiectasias mucocutâneas e viscerais, e por malformações arteriovenosas. Manifestações neurológicas ocorrem em 8 a 12% dos doentes e resultam em mais de metade dos casos
de malformações arteriovenosas pulmonares. A telangiectasia hemorrágica hereditária é uma das causas mais frequentes de abcessos cerebrais recorrentes, múltiplos e bilaterais, tendendo estes a ocorrerem na 3a para a 5a década. Apresentamos o caso de uma mulher de 88 anos admitida por prostração, febre e insuficiência respiratória, com a suspeita de metastização pulmonar de neoplasia oculta, cuja investigação revelou, entretanto, um abcesso cerebral secundário a malformações arteriovenosas pulmonares.
Apesar da antibioterapia e da drenagem cirúrgica do abcesso, a paciente veio a falecer. O prognóstico após drenagem dos abcessos sem ressecção das lesões pulmonares é desfavorável, podendo sua elevada mortalidade refletir um atraso diagnóstico pela falta de reconhecimento dessa associação.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
PANIC: the new panoramic NIR camera for Calar Alto
PANIC is a wide-field NIR camera, which is currently under development for
the Calar Alto observatory (CAHA) in Spain. It uses a mosaic of four Hawaii-2RG
detectors and covers the spectral range from 0.8-2.5 micron(z to K-band). The
field-of-view is 30x30 arcmin. This instrument can be used at the 2.2m
telescope (0.45arcsec/pixel, 0.5x0.5 degree FOV) and at the 3.5m telescope
(0.23arcsec/pixel, 0.25x0.25 degree FOV). The operating temperature is about
77K, achieved by liquid Nitrogen cooling. The cryogenic optics has three flat
folding mirrors with diameters up to 282 mm and nine lenses with diameters
between 130 mm and 255 mm. A compact filter unit can carry up to 19 filters
distributed over four filter wheels. Narrow band (1%) filters can be used. The
instrument has a diameter of 1.1 m and it is about 1 m long. The weight limit
of 400 kg at the 2.2m telescope requires a light-weight cryostat design. The
aluminium vacuum vessel and radiation shield have wall thicknesses of only 6 mm

Investigation of conduction band structure, electron scattering mechanisms and phase transitions in indium selenide by means of transport measurements under pressure
In this work we report on Hall effect, resistivity and thermopower
measurements in n-type indium selenide at room temperature under either
hydrostatic and quasi-hydrostatic pressure. Up to 40 kbar (= 4 GPa), the
decrease of carrier concentration as the pressure increases is explained
through the existence of a subsidiary minimum in the conduction band. This
minimum shifts towards lower energies under pressure, with a pressure
coefficient of about -105 meV/GPa, and its related impurity level traps
electrons as it reaches the band gap and approaches the Fermi level. The
pressure value at which the electron trapping starts is shown to depend on the
electron concentration at ambient pressure and the dimensionality of the
electron gas. At low pressures the electron mobility increases under pressure
for both 3D and 2D electrons, the increase rate being higher for 2D electrons,
which is shown to be coherent with previous scattering mechanisms models. The
phase transition from the semiconductor layered phase to the metallic sodium
cloride phase is observed as a drop in resistivity around 105 kbar, but above
40 kbar a sharp nonreversible increase of the carrier concentration is
observed, which is attributed to the formation of donor defects as precursors

Random mating and reproductive compatibility among Argentinean and southern Brazilian populations of Anastrepha fraterculus (Diptera: Tephritidae)
As a prerequisite for area-wide application of the sterile insect technique in an area encompassing northern Argentina and southern Brazil, prezygotic and postzygotic reproductive compatibility among three geographically distant populations in the area was tested. In field cages, sexually mature adults of each population were found to be sexually compatible, mating duration was not affected by fly origin and there was no clear evidence of spatial partition of mating location. In the laboratory, homotypic and heterotypic crosses for all possible combinations displayed similar levels of fertility and yielded F1 adults without distortion of the sex ratio. Finally, F1 hybrid and parental adults produced equally viable F2 eggs. Put together, our results and those from earlier studies suggest that a large area, ranging from Buenos Aires to the surroundings of São Paulo, could be managed using a single A. fraterculus mass-reared strain. At the northern margin of this area, two A. fraterculus morphotypes appear to coexist in sympatry. We delineate future research to further delimit the distribution of the aff1 morphotype (Argentina-southern Brazil) and to gain insight into evolutionary patterns producing divergence and radiation of tropical fruit fly species.Fil: Rull, J.. Feature Model Differences
International audienceFeature models are a widespread means to represent commonality and variability in software product lines. As is the case for other kinds of models, computing and managing feature model differences is useful in various real-world situations. In this paper, we propose a set of novel differencing techniques that combine syntactic and semantic mechanisms, and automatically produce meaningful differences. Practitioners can exploit our results in various ways: to understand, manipulate, visualize and reason about differences. They can also combine them with existing feature model composition and decomposition operators. The proposed automations rely on satisfiability algorithms. They come with a dedicated language and a comprehensive environment. We illustrate and evaluate the practical usage of our techniques through a case study dealing with a configurable component framework
The dynamical evolution of the circumstellar gas around low-and intermediate-mass stars I: the AGB
We have investigated the dynamical interaction of low- and-intermediate mass
stars (from 1 to 5 Msun) with their interstellar medium (ISM). In this first
paper, we examine the structures generated by the stellar winds during the
Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) phase, using a numerical code and the wind
history predicted by stellar evolution. The influence of the external ISM is
also taken into account. We find that the wind variations associated with the
thermal pulses lead to the formation of transient shells with an average
lifetime of 20,000 yr, and consequently do not remain recorded in the density
or velocity structure of the gas. The formation of shells that survive at the
end of the AGB occurs via two main processes: shocks between the shells formed
by two consecutive enhancements of the mass-loss or via continuous accumulation
of the material ejected by the star in the interaction region with the ISM. Our
models show that the mass of the circumstellar envelope increases appreciably
due to the ISM material swept up by the wind (up to 70 % for the 1 Msun stellar
model). We also point out the importance of the ISM on the deceleration and
compression of the external shells. According to our simulations, large regions
(up to 2.5 pc) of neutral gas surrounding the molecular envelopes of AGB stars
are expected. These large regions of gas are formed from the mass-loss

Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) do also cast neutrophil extracellular traps against the apicomplexan parasite Neospora caninum
Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are web-like structures composed of nuclear DNA decorated with histones and cytoplasmic peptides which antiparasitic properties have not previously been investigated in cetaceans. Polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) were isolated from healthy bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), and stimulated with Neospora caninum tachyzoites and the NETs-agonist zymosan. In vitro interactions of PMN with the tachyzoites resulted in rapid extrusion of NETs. For the demonstration and quantification of cetacean NETs, extracellular DNA was stained by using either Sytox Orange® or Pico Green®. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fluorescence analyses demonstrated PMN-derived release of NETs upon exposure to tachyzoites of N. caninum. Co-localization studies of N. caninum induced cetacean NETs proved the presence of DNA adorned with histones (H1, H2A/H2B, H3, H4), neutrophil elastase (NE), myeloperoxidase (MPO) and pentraxin (PTX) confirming the molecular properties of mammalian NETosis. Dolphin-derived N. caninum-NETosis were efficiently suppressed by DNase I and diphenyleneiodonium (DPI) treatments. Our results indicate that cetacean-derived NETs represent an ancient, conserved and relevant defense effector mechanism of the host innate immune system against N. caninum and probably other related neozoan parasites circulating in the marine environment
GRB 021004: Tomography of a gamma-ray burst progenitor and its host galaxy
We analyse the distribution of matter around the progenitor star of gamma-ray
burst GRB 021004 as well as the properties of its host galaxy with
high-resolution echelle as well as near-infrared spectroscopy. Observations
were taken by the 8.2m Very Large Telescope with the Ultraviolet and Visual
Echelle spectrograph (UVES) and the Infrared Spectrometer And Array Camera
(ISAAC) between 10 and 14 hours after the onset of the event. We report the
first detection of emission lines from a GRB host galaxy in the near-infrared,
detecting H-alpha and the [O III] doublet. These allow an independent
measurement of the systemic redshift (z = 2.3304 +/- 0.0005) which is not
contaminated by absorption as the Ly-alpha line is, and the deduction of
properties of the host galaxy. From the visual echelle spectroscopy, we find
several absorption line groups spanning a range of about 3,000 km/s in velocity
relative to the redshift of the host galaxy. The absorption profiles are very
complex with both velocity-broadened components extending over several 100 km/s
and narrow lines with velocity widths of only 20 km/s. By analogy with QSO
absorption line studies, the relative velocities,widths, and degrees of
ionization of the lines ("line-locking", "ionization--velocity correlation")
show that the progenitor had both an extremely strong radiation field and
several distinct mass loss phases (winds). These results are consistent with
GRB progenitors being massive stars, such as Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs) or
Wolf--Rayet stars, providing a detailed picture of the spatial and velocity
structure of the GRB progenitor star at the time of explosion. The host galaxy
is a prolific star-forming galaxy with a SFR of about 40 solar masses per year.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. Accepted for publication in Astronomy and
