    Finite Element Analysis of and Multiscale Skeletal Tissue Mechanics Concerning a Single Dental Implant Site

    Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)Finite element analysis (FEA) in implantology is performed in design applications concerning the complex topology of an implant, according to theoretical assumptions about and clinical data concerning the biomechanical nature of skeletal tissue. Implants are placed in topologically and physiologically complex sites, and major disagreement exists in literature about various aspects concerning their modeling and analysis. Current research seeks to improve the implementation of an implant by the use of short implants, which negate the necessity of additional surgical procedures in regions of limited bone height. However, short implants with large crown heights introduce biomechanical complications associated with increased stress and strain distributions in skeletal tissue, which may cause bone loss and implant failure. The short implant is characterized by the geometric ratio of the crown height to the implant length, called the crown-to-implant (C/I) ratio. In this work nonlinear FEA was performed to investigate the effects and significance of the C/I ratio on long-term implant stability. A finite element model was developed according to literature, and emulation of previous research and comparison of reported results were performed. Comparison of results demonstrated significant sources of error in previous research, which are argued to be caused by mesh-dependency from common model idealizations in literature. A convergence test was then performed, which verified the mesh-dependency of results and challenged the reliability of some common model assumptions and methods of analysis in literature. A 16-point design of experiments was then performed to evaluate the significance and influence of the C/I ratio, considering a proposed novel method for evaluating results and predicting long-term stability. Analysis of results demonstrated that the C/I ratio augments the inherent biomechanical effects of an implant design, particularly overloading strain concentrations at implant interface features. The use of short implants with high C/I ratios is determined to be inadvisable, considering the physiological response of tissue to strain distributions and biological context. A novel, multiscale material model is then proposed to describe the short-term accumulation of damage and biomechanical remodeling response in orthotropic skeletal tissue, as a potential solution to the mesh-dependency of results

    The Role of Identity in Disposal: Lessons from Mothers’ Disposal of Children’s Possessions

    This study uses depth interviews with mothers about their disposal of children’s possessions to craft a new understanding of the role of identity in disposal. Our study asks: How does identity influence the disposal process of ordinary possessions? A disposal identity continuum of keepers and discarders emerged from the data. This new understanding suggests that disposal involves decisions regarding the match of possession to mother, partner, child, and family identities. When disposal identities lead to conflict between the actors in the disposal decision, decision makers use coping strategies such as subterfuge, avoidance, forced choice, and training/discussion. In addition, the disposal process can lead to negative emotional outcomes such as ambivalence and guilt for both keepers and discarders

    Three Dimensional Bistatic Tomography Using HDTV

    The thesis begins with a review of the principles of diffraction and reflection tomography; starting with the analytic solution to the inhomogeneous Helmholtz equation, after linearization by the Born approximation (the weak scatterer solution), and arriving at the Filtered Back Projection (Propagation) method of reconstruction. This is followed by a heuristic derivation more directly couched in the radar imaging context, without the rigor of the general inverse problem solution and more closely resembling an imaging turntable or inverse synthetic aperture radar. The heuristic derivation leads into the concept of the line integral and projections (the Radon Transform), followed by more general geometries where the plane wave approximation is invalid. We proceed next to study of the dependency of reconstruction on the space-frequency trajectory, combining the spatial aperture and waveform. Two and three dimensional apertures, monostatic and bistatic, fully and sparsely sampled and including partial apertures, with controlled waveforms (CW and pulsed, with and without modulation) define the filling of k-space and concomitant reconstruction performance. Theoretical developments in the first half of the thesis are applied to the specific example of bistatic tomographic imaging using High Definition Television (HDTV); the United States version of DVB-T. Modeling of the HDTV waveform using pseudonoise modulation to represent the hybrid 8VSB HDTV scheme and the move-stop-move approximation established the imaging potential, employing an idealized, isotropic 18 scatterer. As the move-stop-move approximation places a limitation on integration time (in cross correlation/pulse compression) due to transmitter/receiver motion, an exact solution for compensation of Doppler distortion is derived. The concept is tested with the assembly and flight test of a bistatic radar system employing software-defined radios (SDR). A three dimensional, bistatic collection aperture, exploiting an elevated commercial HDTV transmitter, is focused to demonstrate the principle. This work, to the best of our knowledge, represents a first in the formation of three dimensional images using bistatically-exploited television transmitters

    Analisis Kesesuaian Ruang Terbuka Hijau Menggunakan Spacial Multi-Criteria Analysis (SCMA) Di Kecamatan Lowokwaru, Kota Malang

    Meningkatnya jumlah penduduk menyebabkan meningkatnya juga kebutuhan akan lahan. Hal ini dapat menyebabkan berkurangnya areal ketersediaannya ruang terbuka hijau. permasalahan penyediaan dan pemanfaatan ruang terbuka hijau di perkotaan terjadi karena pembangunan berskala besar dan cepat, kepadatan tinggi dan kota dengan permasalahan spesifik seperti kekurangan area hijau, atau hilangnya keanekaragaman hayati. Untuk itu dalam penelitian ini akan mengkaji terkait kesesuian ruang terbuka hijau yang ada di Kecamatan Lowokwaru Kota Malang karena ditemukan adanya ketidaksesuian terhadap pemanfaatan ruang terbuka hijau. Data yang digunakan adalah citra satelit Lansat 8. Metode pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah teknik observasi dan dokumentasi. Metode analisa yang digunakan adalah analisa Spacial Multi-Criteria Analysis dan analisa Overlay berbasis GIS untuk mengetahui kondisi, persebaran dan nilai kesesuaian ruang terbuka hijau. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa kondisi ruang terbuka hijau di Kecamatan Lowokwaru tergolong baik namun tidak disemua kelurahan. teridentifikasi beberapa kelurahan yang tingkat pertumbuhan penduduknya tinggi dan pesat. Kasifikasi nilai kesesuaian ruang terbuka hijau di kecamatan Lowokwaru dari total luasan ruang terbuka hijau Kota Malang tahun 2022 yaitu 1.042.508,25 M² (14%). Nilai Kesesuaian ruang terbuka hijau di Kecamatan Lowokwaru cuman terdapat 38,13 Ha (4,39%) dari total luas Kecamatan Lowokwaru yaitu 2,809.513 Ha

    Overcoming Bias Against Funding of Female-Led Entrepreneurial Initiatives: The Democratizing Influence of Online Crowdlending Platforms

    Crowdlending platforms are becoming an increasingly prominent alternative funding channel for marginalized entrepreneurs to traditional financing. We examine whether the gender bias generally seen in conventional funding channels extends to the funding of female-led ventures in online platforms and how this potential bias affects service businesses. Our analysis of the KIVA crowdlending platform suggests that while online crowdlending platforms exert a democratizing influence on the funding of female entrepreneurial ventures, female-led service businesses were less able to get financing, mainly for larger loan amounts and longer loan terms. Our findings have significant implications for female entrepreneurs working for marginalized/social causes

    Sexuality Workplace Issues Among Direct Service Personnel Working With Populations Who Are Intellectually Disabled In Community Integrated Living Arrangements: A Case Study

    TITLE: SEXUALITY WORKPLACE ISSUES AMONG DIRECT SERVICE PERSONNEL WORKING WITH POPULATIONS WHO ARE INTELLECTUALLY DISABLED IN COMMUNITY INTEGRATED LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: A CASE STUDY MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Roberta Ogletree Background: The purpose of this study was to explore DSP workplace experiences, preparation, employee training, emotions, and perceptions in regards to types of sexual and affectionate behaviors exhibited by intellectually disabled adults in their care in the CILA setting. The study focused on analyzing these topics in relation to sexuality/affectionate behaviors experienced in the CILA workplace using a qualitative case study method. This analysis provided an understanding of what ideas and values DSPs brought to their roles of guiding the sexuality/affectionate behaviors of residents in their care and identified additional training needs from the DSP perspective to help them better do their jobs. Methods: Principles found in qualitative evaluation research were used to examine the influence of sexuality and affectionate behaviors and training within its naturally occurring world. The case was comprised of DSPs from the selected organization, located in a rural college town of approximately 25,000 people. Nine DSPs from five different CILA homes participated in the study. Data were generated using semi-structured interviews, observation of behaviors on interview video tapes, observation of emotional verbal cues on interview audio tapes, document analysis, and field notes. Results: Major themes were identified from data and organized around the research questions. Common categories under affectionate behaviors were dating, flirting, friendship/socialization, holding hands/hugging, media/technology, and problematic behaviors. Common categories under sexuality behaviors were groping, masturbation/females, masturbation/males, and problematic behaviors. Less common categories were affectionate behaviors-attention seeking/ego, sexuality behaviors – sexual intercourse, and sexuality behaviors – dating and marriage. Once data were categorized, each category’s responses were sorted to identify overarching theme areas for recommendations. The themes were Employee Training and Development, Socialization Needs (Affectionate Behaviors, Sexuality, and Relationships), and Language Issues (Positive, Negative, and First Person). Primary strengths identified included thinking of residents as family, the feeling of strong management support, and lack of significant conflict within the CILA homes. Elements that detracted from the DSP experience included low rate of hourly pay, employee turnover among DSP supervisors, lack of specific sexuality education for both staff and residents, limited retention of mandatory training topics, and lack of communication of sexuality policies and procedures. Conclusions were a need for additional training for DSPs and staff on the topics of human sexuality and affectionate behaviors in CILA homes; examining DSP training to increase knowledge retention in the staff; better communication of policies, procedures, and protocols regarding sexuality and affectionate behaviors that pertain to how situations are handled in CILA homes; and ensuring all training materials use first person language
