    An Econometric Analysis of Convergence : Econometric methods applied to the theory of macroeconomics and economic growth

    Master's thesis Business Administration BE501 - University of Agder 2018This master thesis explores the concept of convergence in a macroeconomic perspective and applies econometric methods to economic growth theory. Tests and analysis are performed using a dataset of national accounts from the rich database of The Penn World Tables version 9.0 and the statistical software Stata 15.1. Two sample selections are performed, with observations for 101 and 53 countries from 1970 to 2014. The convergence classifications of ÎČ convergence, both absolute and conditional, as well as σ convergence are explained. The concepts of convergence are related to their respective research question. Do poorer economies tend to grow faster than richer economies? Do inequalities between poorer economies and richer economies tend to decrease? Do economies converge towards a common or unique steady state? Macroeconomic and economic growth theory is discussed and explained through neoclassical growth theory and new growth theory. The Solow model from neoclassical growth theory and the R&D model from new growth theory are mathematically derived and empirically tested to explore the dynamics of economic growth and to answer the question of the concept of absolute convergence. Other applied tests are growth-initial level regressions, which tests for ÎČ convergence, and standard deviation time series, which tests for σ convergence. The research provides empirical evidence that poorer economies do tend to grow faster than richer economies, but with unreliable results due to issues of non-normality and heteroscedasticity. Empirical evidence also suggests that income dispersion of OECD countries is steadily increasing and that income dispersion of the full sample of 101 countries decreased from 1970 to 1988. The standard deviation time series test does not give a conclusive answer for the full sample after 1988. Due to issues of heteroscedasticity and autocorrelation, generalized least squares method is used to give the best linear unbiased estimator of the parameters of the Solow model. Empirical evidence show that capital’s share is 60% and not 1/3 as the theory suggests. By adding human capital as in the theory of the augmented Solow model, empirical evidence shows a much lower capital’s share of 20%. Individual heterogeneity suggests that countries follow unique paths to their own equilibrium level of economic growth given the parameters of the Solow model. The resulting evidence from the conducted tests and analysis successfully provides satisfactory answers to the research questions of this master thesis

    Die zurĂŒckliegenden Jahre haben deutlich gemacht, welche Bedeutung Innovationen im Biotechnologie- und Gesundheitssektor fĂŒr Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft haben. AllgegenwĂ€rtig sichtbare Unternehmen wie Curevac und BioNTech zeigen, welchen zentralen Beitrag AusgrĂŒndungen aus den Lebenswissenschaften leisten können. Die Metropolregion Berlin hat als Ökosystem fĂŒr Bio- und HealthTech Startups im vergangenen Jahrzehnt rapide an Bedeutung gewonnen. WĂ€hrend die Metropolregion Berlin bei digitalen Startups bereits fĂŒhrend ist, verbleiben fĂŒr forschungsintensive Technologie-Startups im Bereich der Biotechnologie und Gesundheitswirtschaft Potenziale ungenutzt. Aus dem qualitativen und quantitativen Vergleich des Berliner Ökosystems mit dem europaweit fĂŒhrenden Ökosystem Cambridge (UK) sowie weiteren Standorten in Deutschland, haben wir sechs Kernherausforderungen herausgearbeitet. Diesen muss sich sich die Metropolregion Berlin stellen, um im Spitzenfeld der Ökosysteme fĂŒr Bio & HealthTech Startups weiter aufzuholen. Die wichtigste Herausforderung fĂŒr Berlin stellt die Nachhaltigkeit eines vernetzten Ökosystems fĂŒr forschungsintensive Bio- und HealthTech Startups dar. Zwar können grĂŒndungsinteressierte Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler prinzipiell auf erfolgskritische Ressourcen wie Talent, Wissen, Beziehungen, Patente und Kapital zurĂŒckgreifen, diese werden bisher jedoch nur unzureichend genutzt und sind hĂ€ufig nicht in ausreichendem Maße vorhanden. Statt einem sich stetig verstĂ€rkenden regionalen Kreislauf, wie er sich im IT-Sektor entwickelt hat, geht im Bereich der Biotechnologie und Gesundheitswirtschaft immer wieder Kapital und Wissen verloren, insbesondere weil die Entwicklungs- und Vermarktungszyklen vergleichsweise lang und kapitalintensiv sind. Die weiteren Herausforderungen stellen Facetten dieses Problems dar. ● GrĂŒndungen fĂŒr Bio- und Health Tech haben ein Skalierungsproblem, was die Nachhaltigkeit des Ökosystems gefĂ€hrdet ● Auf lange & oft exklusiv öffentliche Förderung folgen Investments von lokal schwach vernetzten privaten InvestorInnen ● GrĂŒndungsteams mangelt es an Spezialisierung im Management ● GrĂŒndungsteams mangelt es an unternehmerischer und (angewandt-) wissenschaftlicher Erfahrung ● GrĂŒndungsteams benötigen belastbares Netzwerk zu Personen aus privater und öffentlicher F&E vor Ort ● Trotz Spitzenforschung halten Startups nicht ausreichend Eigentum an breiten Patenten sowie starken und international ausgerichteten IP-Portfolios. FĂŒr jede Herausforderung wurden konkrete Handlungsempfehlungen abgeleitet. Wir schlagen vor, diese systematisch zu evaluieren und fĂŒr die Implementierung eine zentrale Dialogplattform zu schaffen, die in engem Schulterschluss mit der Berliner Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft und Politik arbeitet. Sie soll durch diese Maßnahmen die Fertigstellung zahlreicher Infrastrukturprojekte in der Metropolregion (z.B. Campus Buch, FUBIC etc.) bis 2023 programmatisch begleiten und auf mehr Nachhaltigkeit im Startup Ökosystem fĂŒr Bio & HealthTech Startups hinwirken.The past few years have made it clear how important innovations in the biotechnology and healthcare sector are for the economy and society. Companies such as Curevac and BioNTech show the central contribution that start-ups from the life sciences can make. The Berlin metropolitan region has rapidly gained importance as an ecosystem for biotech and health tech startups over the past decade. While there is still potential for research-intensive technology startups in the biotech and healthtech sectors, the Berlin metropolitan region is already a leader in digital startups. From the qualitative and quantitative comparison of the Berlin ecosystem with the leading ecosystem in Europe, Cambridge (UK), and other locations in Germany, we have identified six core challenges that the Berlin metropolitan region must address in order to continue catching up on the leading field of ecosystems for bio & health tech startups. The most important challenge for Berlin is the sustainability of a networked ecosystem for research-intensive bio and health tech startups. Although scientists interested in founding startups can in principle draw on success-critical resources such as talent, knowledge, relationships, patents and financial capital, these have so far been underutilized and are often not available in sufficient quantities. Sustainability of a networked ecosystem for research-intensive bio and health tech startups represents the most important challenge for Berlin. Rather than a steadily strengthening regional cycle, as has developed in the IT sector, capital and knowledge are repeatedly lost in the biotechnology and healthcare industries, particularly because development and commercialization cycles are comparatively long and capital-intensive. The other challenges represent facets of this problem. ● Bio and health tech startups have a scaling problem, which threatens the sustainability of the ecosystem. ● Long & often exclusive public funding is followed by investments from from weak locally connected private investors ● Founding teams lack specialization in management ● Founding teams lack entrepreneurial and (applied) scientific experience ● Startup teams need robust network with people from private and public R&D in the area ● Despite cutting-edge research, startups do not hold sufficient ownership of broad patents and strong and internationally focused IP portfolios. Specific recommendations for action were derived for each challenge. We propose to systematically evaluate these and to create a central dialog platform for implementation that works in close cooperation with Berlin's science, business and political communities. Through these measures, it should programmatically accompany the completion of numerous infrastructure projects in the metropolitan region (e.g. Campus Buch, FUBIC, etc.) until 2023 and work towards more sustainability in the startup ecosystem for bio & health tech startups

    Air drag coefficient of textile-covered elastic cylinders – preliminary aerodynamic studies

    This paper presents preliminary experimental results on the influence on the aerodynamic drag of a cylinder from the cylinder type (i.e., rigid or soft) and its textile surface. Both a rigid cylinder and a soft-body cylinder, with a gelatin layer, each with five different textile surfaces were measured in the wind tunnel using force measurement technology. The drag coefficient was determined for several Reynolds numbers. The study shows that the elasticity of a cylinder has a significant influence on the drag force and the airflow type. However, the influence of the soft-body cylinder depends on the respective fabric. With the given measurements, no exact statements can yet be made to quantify the influence. This influence must be studied independently and in conjunction with the textile surface in order to gain understanding of the overall system of airflow, textile and elastic body

    Fibril-induced glutamine-/asparagine-rich prions recruit stress granule proteins in mammalian cells

    Prions of lower eukaryotes are self-templating protein aggregates that replicate by converting homotypic proteins into stable, tightly packed beta-sheet-rich protein assemblies. Propagation is mediated by prion domains, low-complexity regions enriched in polar and devoid of charged amino acid residues. In mammals, compositionally similar domains modulate the assembly of dynamic stress granules (SGs) that associate via multivalent weak interactions. Dysregulation of SGs composed of proteins with prion-like domains has been proposed to underlie the formation of pathological inclusions in several neurodegenerative diseases. The events that drive prion-like domains into transient or solid assemblies are not well understood. We studied the interactors of the prototype prion domain NM of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Sup35 in its soluble or fibril-induced prion conformation in the mammalian cytosol. We show that the interactomes of soluble and prionized NM overlap with that of SGs. Prion induction by exogenous seeds does not cause SG assembly, demonstrating that colocalization of aberrant protein inclusions with SG components does not necessarily reveal SGs as initial sites of protein misfolding

    Adipose tissue ATGL modifies the cardiac lipidome in pressure-overload-induced left ventricular failure

    Adipose tissue lipolysis occurs during the development of heart failure as a consequence of chronic adrenergic stimulation. However, the impact of enhanced adipose triacylglycerol hydrolysis mediated by adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL) on cardiac function is unclear. To investigate the role of adipose tissue lipolysis during heart failure, we generated mice with tissue-specific deletion of ATGL (atATGL-KO). atATGL-KO mice were subjected to transverse aortic constriction (TAC) to induce pressure-mediated cardiac failure. The cardiac mouse lipidome and the human plasma lipidome from healthy controls (n = 10) and patients with systolic heart failure (HFrEF, n = 13) were analyzed by MS-based shotgun lipidomics. TAC-induced increases in left ventricular mass (LVM) and diastolic LV inner diameter were significantly attenuated in atATGL-KO mice compared to wild type (wt) -mice. More importantly, atATGL-KO mice were protected against TAC-induced systolic LV failure. Perturbation of lipolysis in the adipose tissue of atATGL-KO mice resulted in the prevention of the major cardiac lipidome changes observed after TAC in wt-mice. Profound changes occurred in the lipid class of phosphatidylethanolamines (PE) in which multiple PE-species were markedly induced in failing wt-hearts, which was attenuated in atATGL-KO hearts. Moreover, selected heart failure-induced PE species in mouse hearts were also induced in plasma samples from patients with chronic heart failure. TAC-induced cardiac PE induction resulted in decreased PC/PE-species ratios associated with increased apoptotic marker expression in failing wt-hearts, a process absent in atATGL-KO hearts. Perturbation of adipose tissue lipolysis by ATGL-deficiency ameliorated pressure-induced heart failure and the potentially deleterious cardiac lipidome changes that accompany this pathological process, namely the induction of specific PE species. Non-cardiac ATGL-mediated modulation of the cardiac lipidome may play an important role in the pathogenesis of chronic heart failure

    The definition of the absolute neutrino mass scale is one of the main goals of the Particle Physics today. The study of the end-point regions of the ÎČ- and electron capture (EC) spectrum offers a possibility to determine the effective electron (anti-)neutrino mass in a completely model independent way, as it only relies on the energy and momentum conservation. The ECHo (Electron Capture in 163Ho) experiment has been designed in the attempt to measure the effective mass of the electron neutrino by performing high statistics and high energy resolution measurements of the 163 Ho electron capture spectrum. To achieve this goal, large arrays of low temperature metallic magnetic calorimeters (MMCs) implanted with with 163Ho are used. Here we report on the structure and the status of the experiment

    Pharmacological and pre-clinical safety profile of rSIV.F/HN, a hybrid lentiviral vector for cystic fibrosis gene therapy

    RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVE: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is caused by mutations in the CF Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) gene. CFTR modulators offer significant improvements, but approximately 10% of patients remain nonresponsive or are intolerant. This study provides an analysis of rSIV.F/HN, a lentiviral vector optimized for lung delivery, including CFTR protein expression, functional correction of CFTR defects and genomic integration site analysis in preparation for a first-in-human clinical trial.METHODS: Air-liquid interface cultures of primary human bronchial epithelial cells (HBEC) from CF patients (F508del/F508del), as well as a CFTR-deficient immortalized human lung epithelial cell line mimicking Class I (CFTR-null) homozygous mutations, were used to assess transduction efficiency. Quantification methods included a novel proximity ligation assay (PLA) for CFTR protein expression. For assessment of CFTR channel activity, Ussing chamber studies were conducted. The safety profile was assessed using integration site analysis and in vitro insertional mutagenesis studies.RESULTS: rSIV.F/HN expressed CFTR and restored CFTR-mediated chloride currents to physiological levels in primary F508del/F508del HBECs as well as in a Class I cells. In contrast, the latter could not be achieved by small-molecule CFTR modulators, underscoring the potential of gene therapy for this mutation class. Combination of rSIV.F/HN-CFTR with the potentiator ivacaftor showed a greater than additive effect. The genomic integration pattern showed no site predominance (frequency of occurrence ≀10%), and a low risk of insertional mutagenesis was observed in an in vitro immortalization assay.CONCLUSIONS: The results underscore rSIV.F/HN as a promising gene therapy vector for CF, providing a mutation-agnostic treatment option.</p

    Quadrupole moments of odd-A ⁔³⁻⁶³Mn: Onset of collectivity towards N = 40

    The spectroscopic quadrupole moments of the odd–even Mn isotopes between N=28 and N=38 have been measured using bunched-beam collinear laser spectroscopy at ISOLDE, CERN. In order to increase sensitivity to the quadrupole interaction, the measurements have been done using a transition in the ion rather than in the atom, with the additional advantage of better spectroscopic efficiency. Since the chosen transition is from a metastable state, optical pumping in ISOLDE’s cooler and buncher (ISCOOL) was used to populate this state. The extracted quadrupole moments are compared to large-scale shell model predictions using three effective interactions, GXPF1A, LNPS and modified A3DA. The inclusion of both the 1Îœg9/2and 2Îœd5/2orbitals in the model space is shown to be necessary to reproduce the observed increase in the quadrupole deformation from N=36 onwards. Specifically, the inclusion of the 2Îœd5/2orbital induces an increase in neutron and proton excitations across the reduced gaps at N=40and Z=28, leading to an increase in deformation above N=36
