Eye've seen this before: building a gaze data analysis tool for déjà vu detection

    Get PDF
2022 Summer.Includes bibliographical references. In order to expand the understanding of the phenomenon known as déjà vu, an investigation into the use of eyetracking was needed. Through the use of an advanced eyetracking device, open-source software, and previous research into déjà vu, this thesis provides a discussion and analysis of the development for a standardized eyetracking set up for general gaze data collection and a novel gaze data conversion pipeline. The tools created for this thesis work in conjunction to collect and convert data into easier to comprehend formats and separates the results into simplified separate text files. This data analysis tool analyzes and formats files en mass in order to make the processing of high volumes of data easier. These tools are designed to be accessible to professionals within and outside of the field of computer science. With these tools researchers can develop their own projects and implement the eyetracking code over theirs and then pass the output data through the data analysis tool to gather all the information needed

Biogeographical Patterns in the Hard-Tick Genus Amblyomma Koch 1844 (Acari: Ixodidae)

    Get PDF
Amblyomma Koch is a genus of hard-ticks with approximately 130 species. Its geographical range is typical for organisms with a Gondwanan origin. A majority of these species are endemic to the Neo- and Afrotropical regions, with the remaining taxa dispersed throughout Southeast Asia, Australia and the Pacific islands. Based on this distribution, we hypothesize that the genus dispersal patterns will mirror the fragmentation and continental drift of the Gondwanan supercontinent. Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, Bayesian inference and node-dating analyses of nuclear 18S rDNA gene sequences reveal a more recent origin and radiation patterns within the genus and suggest that Amblyomma’s evolutionary history is more complex than simple continental drift (ancient Gondwanan vicariance) hypotheses

Standing at a Crossroads: How to Navigate the Intersection of Title VII and RFRA in Federal Employment Religious Discrimination Cases

    Get PDF
What do apple pie, religious discrimination, a global pandemic, and federal employees all have in common? They are each part of the landscape surrounding the intersection of Title VII and RFRA. But the landscape is in dire need of rejuvenation pruning. To date, many lower courts have held that Title VII preempts RFRA in cases where a federal employee claims they have suffered religious discrimination in the workplace. This is problematic because, not only was RFRA passed with the intention that it would cover all cases and preempt laws passed before and after it, but more importantly, RFRA’s strict scrutiny standard provides federal employees’ religious beliefs greater protection than Title VII’s reasonable accommodation requirement. Under the current landscape of the law, which is riddled with misunderstanding and misapplication, religious liberties for federal employees are being threatened in unprecedented ways. In order to restore this vital landscape, it is important to begin with an appreciation for the purposes behind both Title VII and RFRA and an understanding of how each statute provides a different level of protection to federal employees who wish to exercise their religion in the workplace. In hopes of starting the necessary pruning process, this Comment proposes that when the federal government passes or publishes a facially neutral law, regulation, or mandate that directly causes a substantial burden on a federal employee’s religious exercise, a federal employee’s RFRA claim should not be preempted by Title VII. Additionally, in cases where the federal employer could present an undue hardship defense under Title VII by claiming that accommodating the employee’s religious belief would require a violation of the federal law, regulation, or mandate, and thus an undue hardship, the federal employee should be permitted to bring a RFRA claim

The Act prohibits selling or offering to sell any ticket to certain sporting events for a price in excess of the price printed on the ticket. However, the Act provides that authorized ticket agents may charge a service charge which does not exceed three dollars. In addition, the Act provides the same prohibition for the sale of tickets to any entertainment event. However, the Act does allow the owner of the property on which the entertainment event is held to authorize any person to charge a service charge in addition to the price printed on the ticket. The authorization must be in writing and must specify the amount of the service charge. Finally, the Act provides that any advertisement which includes the price of admission for an event covered by this Code section must specify the amount of the service charge to be charged for the sale of the ticket
