    Analysis of dynamic stall using unsteady boundary-layer theory

    The unsteady turbulent boundary layer and potential flow about a pitching airfoil are analyzed using numerical methods to determine the effect of pitch rate on the delay in forward movement of the rear flow reversal point. An explicit finite difference scheme is used to integrate the unsteady boundary layer equations, which are coupled at each instant of time to a fully unsteady and nonlinear potential flow analysis. A substantial delay in forward movement of the reversal point is demonstrated with increasing pitch rate, and it is shown that the delay results partly from the alleviation of the gradients in the potential flow, and partly from the effects of unsteadiness in the boundary layer itself. The predicted delay in flow-reversal onset, and its variation with pitch rate, are shown to be in reasonable agreement with experimental data relating to the delay in dynamic stall. From the comparisons it can be concluded (a) that the effects of time-dependence are sufficient to explain the failure of the boundary layer to separate during the dynamic overshoot, and (b) that there may be some link between forward movement of the reversal point and dynamic stall

    Additional three-dimensional boundary-layer computations for a finite swept wing

    Calculations have been made of the three-dimensional, compressible, turbulent boundary layer on the finite supercritical wing of the NASA modified F-8 transonic research airplane. The calculations were based on the wing pressure distribution measured in flight at M = 0.90, instead of on wind tunnel data at M = 0.50 and 0.99. Data on the boundary-layer thickness, displacement thickness, skin-friction components, and integrated streamwise skin friction are presented for points along the streamwise stations at which pressure measurements were made

    Patterning High Surface Area Silica with Lysozyme: Adsorption Kinetics, Fluorescence Quenching, and Protein Readsorption Studies To Evaluate the Templated Surface

    A method was developed for using an inexpensive and widely available protein, hen egg white lysozyme, as a patterning agent for commercial high surface area silicas. The basic patterning methodology involved spontaneous adsorption of the protein from aqueous solution, alkylation of the uncovered surface with an alkylsiloxane, and protein desorption in a slightly alkaline solution of morpholine. Adsorption kinetic studies using Bradford assays assisted in determining protein deposition conditions. These studies were generally consistent with results on more planar silica surfaces and indicated that the protein quickly and strongly adsorbs along its long axis at low surface coverages. A modified fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) technique was developed and employed to evaluate protein spacing. This technique showed that the proteins are well dispersed at low coverages. Readsorption experiments show that the templated regions are robust, retaining the size and shape of the original protein templates

    The impact of psychological distress and university counselling on academic outcomes: analysis of a routine practiceā€based dataset

    Whole university approaches to student mental health and well-being increasingly involve university counselling and mental health services (UCMHSs) as key stakeholders in higher education and the fulfilment of good academic outcomes. However, previous research using routine outcome measures has focussed on psychological distress only. Research is needed to demonstrate the value of university counselling on academic outcomes. This study aimed at profiling the psychological distress of a student sample according to the Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluationā€”Outcome Measure (CORE-OM); measuring the change in perceived impact of problems on academic outcomes, and measuring the perceived impact of counselling on academic outcomes. Students from two UK university counselling services completed the CORE-OM and the Counselling Impact on Academic Outcomes (CIAO) questionnaire as part of routine practice. After counselling, 67.4% (nā€‰=ā€‰323) of students with planned endings to counselling showed at least reliable improvement on the CORE-OM. Significant reductions in the perceived impact of problems on all academic outcomes were also found. On average, 83% (nā€‰=ā€‰398) of students found counselling helpful for academic outcomes to at least a limited extent. University counselling was found to reduce psychological distress and the impact of problems on academic outcomes. Psychometric examination of the CIAO tool is warranted to strengthen its use. The need for robust data across UCMHSs is demonstrated by both the strengths and limitations of this study

    Validity of the new lifestyles NL-1000 accelerometer for measuring time spent in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity in school settings

    Current interest in promoting physical activity in the school environment necessitates an inexpensive, accurate method of measuring physical activity in such settings. Additionally, it is recognized that physical activity must be of at least moderate intensity in order to yield substantial health benefits. The purpose of the study, therefore, was to determine the validity of the New Lifestyles NL-1000 (New Lifestyles, Inc., Lee's Summit, Missouri, USA) accelerometer for measuring moderate-to-vigorous physical activity in school settings, using the Actigraph GT1M (ActiGraph, Pensacola, Florida, USA) as the criterion. Data were collected during a cross-country run (n = 12), physical education (n = 18), and classroom-based physical activities (n = 42). Significant and meaningful intraclass correlations between methods were found, and NL-1000 estimates of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity were not meaningfully different from GT1M-estimated moderate- to-vigorous physical activity. The NL-1000 therefore shows promising validity evidence as an inexpensive, convenient method of measuring moderate-to-vigorous physical activity in school settings

    State Capacity and the Environmental Investment Gap in Authoritarian States

    We construct an n-period, constrained optimization model where the authoritarian ruler maximizes expected rents subject to budget constraint of available surplus. We show that the larger state capacity is in the previous period, the worse environmental quality will be in the next period: while infrastructural investment and environmental protection increase with state capacity, the former increases at a faster rate which enlarges the gap between the two?the environmental investment gap. Given infrastructural public goods typically damage the environment, the larger this gap is the worse the environmental quality would be. This follows from rulers? optimizing logic of equating marginal returns once we assume the declining marginal productivity of factors of production of surplus. We model three types of air and water pollutants in autocracies as a function of state capacity and other relevant variables. State capacity is associated with higher levels of all three types of pollutants
