    The Glossa Ordinaria on Romans

    Get PDF
The Gloss on Romans is a collection of sources from many periods and places, which accounts for its inconsistencies. And this is what gives the Gloss much of its charm. . . . The twelfth century was an age of gathering sources and commentaries, in theology (Lombard\u27s Sentences), canon law (Gratian\u27s Decretum), and biblical studies (the Glossa ordinaria). Education began to flourish into what would become universities, where the master\u27s role was to elucidate traditional, authoritative texts. And chief among these was the Bible, not standing alone but with the accompanying Gloss. - from the introductionhttps://scholarworks.wmich.edu/mip_teamscs/1002/thumbnail.jp

The effectiveness of internet activity erasure tools to protect privacy

    Get PDF
When most people go to the trouble of getting erasure tools to remove data from their hard drives they expect the job is done correctly. Using erasure tools is a step to protect privacy by assuming the applied tools erase data rather than simply delete data that may be recovered using forensic tools. In this research we tested the performance of the delete function on three web browsers against the performance of eight erasure tools with alarming results. It was found that the erasure tools had almost the same capability to delete data as the web browsers delete function; and that no tool actually erased data. The implications for people using these tools to protect sensitive data are profound. People and organisations as they retire, sell or dispose of their hardware containing information assets require assurance they will not be impacted by the adverse effects of unintended disclosure of sensitive information. Better software solutions are required and better software certification measures require implementation

Horizontal Inequalities and Ethnonationalist Civil War: A Global Comparison

    Get PDF
Contemporary research on civil war has largely dismissed the role of political and economic grievances, focusing instead on opportunities for conflict. However, these strong claims rest on questionable theoretical and empirical grounds. Whereas scholars have examined primarily the relationship between individual inequality and conflict, we argue that horizontal inequalities between politically relevant ethnic groups and states at large can promote ethnonationalist conflict. Extending the empirical scope to the entire world, this article introduces a new spatial method that combines our newly geocoded data on ethnic groups’ settlement areas with spatial wealth estimates. Based on these methodological advances, we find that, in highly unequal societies, both rich and poor groups fight more often than those groups whose wealth lies closer to the country average. Our results remain robust to a number of alternative sample definitions and specifications.</jats:p

The Transpersonal That Can Be Defined Is Not the True Transpersonal: a Taoist Perspective on Defining Transpersonal Psychology (Position Paper)

    Get PDF
This brief position paper is stimulated from the continued need to define and redefine the area of transpersonal psychology. Understandably, being able to articulate what ‘transpersonal psychology’ is enables discussions within the wider academic and public community, yet all existing definitions are complex, conveying a number of inherent meanings in their definition, which in turn, can cloud others’ perceptions on the area

Aortic pseudoaneurysm - An unusual presentation

    Get PDF
Introduction: The esophagus is a frequent site of foreign body impaction, but esophageal perforation and subsequent aortic pseudoaneurysms, and aorto-esophageal fistulas are very rare but potentially life-threatening complications. We present a case of foreign body ingestion, complicated by erosion into the aorta causing a mycotic aneurysm. Case description: We introduce the case of a 60 year-old male with abdominal pain, nausea, fatigue and fevers. Blood cultures grew out gram-positive cocci. A CT scan revealed a distal thoracic aortic saccular aneurysm, with a 2.8 cm linear metallic body penetrating the inferior border of the aneurysm, and intraluminal thrombus formation. CT of the abdomen revealed portal vein thrombosis, splenic and hepatic abscesses. An Esophagogastroduodenoscopy was unremarkable. The patient was started on the appropriate antibiotic therapy. He was then taken to the operating room for an open thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm repair with an interposition cryopreserved graft, with an intercostal muscle flap. A metal bristle was removed. He had an uneventful postoperative course and was discharged home on post-operative day 17. Follow-up CTA showed resolution of the infection and satisfactory repair. Post-operative esophagram showed no esophageal injury. Conclusion: We describe a case of a bristle from a metallic barbeque brush that was ingested. This penetrated the esophagus causing a mycotic aneurysm with septic embolization to the spleen and liver. Our successful treatment approach involved open aortic repair with an interposition cryopreserved graft, and an intercostal muscle flap.https://scholarlycommons.henryford.com/merf2020caserpt/1100/thumbnail.jp

On-sky single-mode fiber coupling measurements at the Large Binocular Telescope

The demonstration of efficient single-mode fiber (SMF) coupling is a key requirement for the development of a compact, ultra-precise radial velocity (RV) spectrograph. iLocater is a next generation instrument for the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) that uses adaptive optics (AO) to inject starlight into a SMF. In preparation for commissioning iLocater, a prototype SMF injection system was installed and tested at the LBT in the Y-band (0.970-1.065 μ\mum). This system was designed to verify the capability of the LBT AO system as well as characterize on-sky SMF coupling efficiencies. SMF coupling was measured on stars with variable airmasses, apparent magnitudes, and seeing conditions for six half-nights using the Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer. We present the overall optical and mechanical performance of the SMF injection system, including details of the installation and alignment procedure. A particular emphasis is placed on analyzing the instrument's performance as a function of telescope elevation to inform the final design of the fiber injection system for iLocater.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure

Arrival of Paleo-Indians to the Southern Cone of South America: New Clues from Mitogenomes

With analyses of entire mitogenomes, studies of Native American mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation have entered the final phase of phylogenetic refinement: the dissection of the founding haplogroups into clades that arose in America during and after human arrival and spread. Ages and geographic distributions of these clades could provide novel clues on the colonization processes of the different regions of the double continent. As for the Southern Cone of South America, this approach has recently allowed the identification of two local clades (D1g and D1j) whose age estimates agree with the dating of the earliest archaeological sites in South America, indicating that Paleo-Indians might have reached that region from Beringia in less than 2000 years. In this study, we sequenced 46 mitogenomes belonging to two additional clades, termed B2i2 (former B2l) and C1b13, which were recently identified on the basis of mtDNA control-region data and whose geographical distributions appear to be restricted to Chile and Argentina. We confirm that their mutational motifs most likely arose in the Southern Cone region. However, the age estimate for B2i2 and C1b13 (11–13,000 years) appears to be younger than those of other local clades. The difference could reflect the different evolutionary origins of the distinct South American-specific sub-haplogroups, with some being already present, at different times and locations, at the very front of the expansion wave in South America, and others originating later in situ, when the tribalization process had already begun. A delayed origin of a few thousand years in one of the locally derived populations, possibly in the central part of Chile, would have limited the geographical and ethnic diffusion of B2i2 and explain the present-day occurrence that appears to be mainly confined to the Tehuelche and Araucanian-speaking grou
