Examines polarized reactions to The Lord of the Rings as both a pro-war and pacifistic work. Sees it as much more balanced, showing Tolkien believed war to sometimes be necessary but peace to be preferable, and mercy to be important above all

Snake net and balloon force with a neural network for detecting multiple phases

Unsupervised machine learning applied to the study of phase transitions is an ongoing and interesting research direction. The active contour model, also called the snake model, was initially proposed for target contour extraction in two-dimensional images. In order to obtain a physical phase diagram, the snake model with an artificial neural network is applied in an unsupervised learning way by the authors of [Phys.Rev.Lett. 120, 176401(2018)]. It guesses the phase boundary as an initial snake and then drives the snake to convergence with forces estimated by the artificial neural network. In this paper, we extend this unsupervised learning method with one contour to a snake net with multiple contours for the purpose of obtaining several phase boundaries in a phase diagram. For the classical Blume-Capel model, the phase diagram containing three and four phases is obtained. Moreover, to overcome the limitations of the initial position and speed up the movement of the snake, the balloon force decaying with the iteration steps is introduced and applied to the snake net structure. Our method is helpful in determining the phase diagram with multiple phases, using just snapshots of configurations from cold atoms or other experiments without knowledge of the phases.Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures, submitted to PR

Space robotics: Recent accomplishments and opportunities for future research

The Langley Guidance, Navigation, and Control Technical Committee (GNCTC) was one of six technical committees created in 1991 by the Chief Scientist, Dr. Michael F. Card. During the kickoff meeting Dr. Card charged the chairmen to: (1) establish a cross-Center committee; (2) support at least one workshop in a selected discipline; and (3) prepare a technical paper on recent accomplishments in the discipline and on opportunities for future research. The Guidance, Navigation, and Control Committee was formed and selected for focus on the discipline of Space robotics. This report is a summary of the committee's assessment of recent accomplishments and opportunities for future research. The report is organized as follows. First is an overview of the data sources used by the committee. Next is a description of technical needs identified by the committee followed by recent accomplishments. Opportunities for future research ends the main body of the report. It includes the primary recommendation of the committee that NASA establish a national space facility for the development of space automation and robotics, one element of which is a telerobotic research platform in space. References 1 and 2 are the proceedings of two workshops sponsored by the committee during its June 1991, through May 1992 term. The focus of the committee for the June 1992 - May 1993 term will be to further define to the recommended platform in space and to add an additional discipline which includes aircraft related GN&C issues. To the latter end members performing aircraft related research will be added to the committee. (A preliminary assessment of future opportunities in aircraft-related GN&C research has been included as appendix A.

Delays in Leniency Application: Is There Really a Race to the Enforcer's Door?

This paper studies cartels’ strategic behavior in delaying leniency applications, a take-up decision that has been ignored in the previous literature. Using European Commission decisions issued over a 16-year span, we show, contrary to common beliefs and the existing literature, that conspirators often apply for leniency long after a cartel collapses. We estimate hazard and probit models to study the determinants of leniency-application delays. Statistical tests find that delays are symmetrically affected by antitrust policies and macroeconomic fluctuations. Our results shed light on the design of enforcement programs against cartels and other forms of conspiracy

Tailoring gold nanoparticle characteristics and the impact on aqueous-phase oxidation of glycerol

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-stabilized Au nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by colloidal methods in which temperature variations (−75 to 75 °C) and mixed H2O/EtOH solvent ratios (0, 50, and 100 vol/vol) were used. The resulting Au NPs were immobilized on TiO2 (P25), and their catalytic performance was investigated for the liquid phase oxidation of glycerol. For each unique solvent system, there was a systematic increase in the average Au particle diameter as the temperature of the colloidal preparation increased. Generation of the Au NPs in H2O at 1 °C resulted in a high observed activity compared with current Au/TiO2 catalysts (turnover frequency = 915 h−1). Interestingly, Au catalysts with similar average particle sizes but prepared under different conditions had contrasting catalytic performance. For the most active catalyst, aberration-corrected high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis identified the presence of isolated Au clusters (from 1 to 5 atoms) for the first time using a modified colloidal method, which was supported by experimental and computational CO adsorption studies. It is proposed that the variations in the populations of these species, in combination with other solvent/PVA effects, is responsible for the contrasting catalytic properties
