    A Multi-Disciplinary Approach to the Study of Large Rock Avalanches Combining Remote Sensing, GIS and Field Surveys: The Case of the Scanno Landslide, Italy

Available from MDPI via the DOI in this record.This research aims to highlight the importance of adopting a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding the factors controlling large rock avalanches using the Scanno landslide, Italy, as a case study. The study area is the Mount Genzana, Abruzzi Central Apennines, characterized by the regional Difesa-Mount Genzana-Vallone delle Masserie fault zone. The Scanno landslide is famous for its role in the formation of the Scanno Lake. The landslide is characterized by a wide exposed scar, which was interpreted in previous studies as the intersection of high-angle joints and an outcropping bedding plane on which the landslide failed sometime between the Upper Pleistocene and the Holocene. In this study, the Scanno landslide was investigated through the integration of geological, geomechanical and geomorphological surveys. Remote sensing techniques were used to enrich the conventionally gathered datasets, while Geographic Information Systems (GIS) were used to integrate, manage and investigate the data. The results of the authors investigation show that the outcropping landslide scar can be interpreted as a low-angle fault, associated with the Difesa-Mount Genzana-Vallone delle Masserie fault zone, which di ers from previous investigations and interpretations of the area. The low-angle fault provides the basal failure surface of the landslide, with two systematic high-angle joint sets acting as lateral release and back scarp surfaces, respectively. In light of these new findings, pre- and post-failure models of the area have been created. The models were generated in GIS by combining LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and geophysics data acquired on the landslide body and through bathymetric survey data of the Scanno Lake. Using the pre- and post-failure models it was possible to estimate the approximate volume of the landslide. Finally, back-analyses using static and dynamic limit equilibrium methods is also used to show the possible influence of medium-to-high magnitude seismic events in triggering the Scanno landslide

    ROLE OF 5-LIPOXYGENASE IN THE MULTIPLE ORGAN FAILURE INDUCED BY ZYMOSAN.

    Objective: This study investigated the role of 5-lipoxygenase in the pathogenesis of multiple organ failure (MOF) induced by zymosan. Design: Male mice with a targeted disruption of the 5-lipoxygenase gene (5-LOKO) and littermate wild-type (WT) controls (5-LOWT) were used to evaluate the role of 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) in the pathogenesis of MOF. Setting: University research laboratory. Interventions and measurements: MOF was induced by peritoneal injection of zymosan (500 mg/kg i.p. as a suspension in saline) in 5-LOWT and in 5-LOKO mice. MOF was assessed 18 h after administration of zymosan and monitored for 12 days (for loss of body weight and mortality). Results: A severe inflammatory process induced by zymosan administration in WT mice coincided with the damage of lung and small intestine, as assessed by histological examination. Myeloperoxidase activity indicative of neutrophil infiltration and lipid peroxidation were significantly increased in zymosan-treated WT mice. Zymosan in the WT mice also induced a significant increase in the plasma level of nitrite/nitrate. Immunohistochemical examination demonstrated a marked increase in the immunoreactivity to ICAM-1 and P-selectin in the lung and intestine of zymosan-treated WT mice. In contrast, the degree of (a) peritoneal inflammation and tissue injury, (b) upregulation/expression of P-selectin and ICAM-1, and (c) neutrophil infiltration were markedly reduced in intestine and lung tissue obtained from zymosan-treated 5-LO deficient mice. Zymosan-treated 5-LOKO showed also a significantly decreased mortality. Conclusions: These findings clearly demonstrate that 5-LO exerts a role in zymosan-induced nonseptic shock

    Hemodynamic changes, plasma catecholamine responses, and echocardiographically detected contractile reserve during two different dobutamine-infusion protocols

    We studied hemodynamic changes, catecholamine responses, and the occurrence of improved wall thickening by echocardiography during two different dobutamine-infusion protocols. Forty-three patients were studied by using a stepwise incremental dobutamine dose-infusion protocol (10-40 μg/kg/min, 3-min intervals); a subgroup of 11 patients also underwent a continuous dobutamine-infusion protocol (10 μg/kg/min for 12 min) in random order. No patient used β-blockers. At 3-min intervals, blood pressure, heart rate, and plasma concentrations of dobutamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine were measured. The echocardiographic improvement of wall thickening was analyzed only in paired protocols by visual assessment in left ventricular regions with normal wall motion at rest. The mean heart rate increased in the continuous and stepwise protocols from 73 to 99 and 74 to 132 beats/min. There was no significant change in blood pressure response between the two protocols. The mean plasma dobutamine concentrations during the continuous and stepwise protocols at 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12 min were 0/0; 31/38; 80/203; 106/448; and 120/692 ng/ml, respectively. In each patient, a response curve was constructed for the plasma dobutamine concentration versus heart rate. The heart rate increment and dobutamine concentration at which wall thickening was detected were similar with both protocols (14 ± 5 vs. 12 ± 7 beats/min) and (8) ± 40 vs. 92 ± 48 ng/ml; mean ± SD).     Escalating CO2 degassing at the Pisciarelli fumarolic system, and implications for the ongoing Campi Flegrei unrest

    This short communication aims at providing an updated report on degassing activity and ground deformation variations observed during the ongoing (2012–2019) Campi Flegrei caldera unrest, with a particular focus on Pisciarelli, currently its most active fumarolic field. We show that the CO2 flux from the main Pisciarelli fumarolic vent (referred as “Soffione”) has increased by a factor > 3 since 2012, reaching in 2018–2019 levels (>600 tons/day) that are comparable to those typical of a medium-sized erupting arc volcano. A substantial widening of the degassing vents and bubbling pools, and a further increase in CO2 concentrations in ambient air (up to 6000 ppm), have also been detected since mid-2018. We interpret this escalating CO2 degassing activity using a multidisciplinary dataset that includes thermodynamically estimated pressures for the source hydrothermal system, seismic and ground deformation data. From this analysis, we show that degassing, deformation and seismicity have all reached in 2018–2019 levels never observed since the onset of the unrest in 2005, with an overall uplift of ~57 cm and ~448 seismic events in the last year. The calculated pressure of the Campi Flegrei hydrothermal system has reached ~44 bar and is rapidly increasing. Our results raise concern on the possible evolution of the Campi Flegrei unrest and reinforce the need for careful monitoring of the degassing activity at Pisciarelli, hopefully with the deployment of additional permanent gas monitoring units

    ESUR prostate MR guidelines 2012

    The aim was to develop clinical guidelines for multi-parametric MRI of the prostate by a group of prostate MRI experts from the European Society of Urogenital Radiology (ESUR), based on literature evidence and consensus expert opinion. True evidence-based guidelines could not be formulated, but a compromise, reflected by “minimal” and “optimal” requirements has been made. The scope of these ESUR guidelines is to promulgate high quality MRI in acquisition and evaluation with the correct indications for prostate cancer across the whole of Europe and eventually outside Europe. The guidelines for the optimal technique and three protocols for “detection”, “staging” and “node and bone” are presented. The use of endorectal coil vs. pelvic phased array coil and 1.5 vs. 3 T is discussed. Clinical indications and a PI-RADS classification for structured reporting are presented

    Real-Time, Real World Learning—Capitalising on Mobile Technology

    This chapter explores the adoption of Web 2.0 technologies to promote active learning by students and to both mediate and enhance classroom instruction. Web 2.0 refers to open source, web-enabled applications (apps) that are driven by user-manipulated and user-generated content (Kassens-Noor, 2012). These apps are often rich in user participation, have dynamic content, and harness the collective intelligence of users (Chen, Hwang, & Wang, 2012). As such, these processes create “active, context based, personalised learning experiences” (Kaldoudi, Konstantinidis, & Bamidis, 2010, p. 130) that prioritise learning ahead of teaching. By putting the learner at the centre of the education process educators can provide environments that enhance employability prospects and spark a passion for learning that, hopefully, lasts a lifetime. As such, we critique an active learning approach that makes use of technology such as mobile applications (apps), Twitter, and augmented reality to enhance students’ real world learning. Dunlap and Lowenthal (2009) argue that social media can facilitate active learning as they recreate informal, free-flowing communications that allow students and academics to connect on a more emotional level. Furthermore, their use upskills students in the technical complexities of the digital world and also the specialised discourses that are associated with online participation, suitable for real world learning and working (Fig. 16.1). Three case studies explore the benefits of Web 2.0 processes. The first details the use of Twitter chats to connect students, academics, and industry professionals via online synchronous discussions that offer a number of benefits such as encouraging concise writing from students and maintaining on-going relationships between staff, students, and industry contacts. The second details a location-based mobile app that delivers content to students when they enter a defined geographical boundary linked to an area of a sports precinct. Finally, we explore the use of augmented reality apps to enhance teaching in Human Geography and Urban Studies

    S.11.1 Influence of digital ulcer healing on disability and daily activity limitations in SSc

    Objective. We previously showed that DU significantly increased global and hand disability with a significant impact on activities of daily living (ADLs) and work disability. This study aims to evaluate the impact of digital ulcer (DU) healing on disability and daily activity limitations in SSc. Methods. From January 2008 and June 2009, we prospectively evaluated 189 SSc patients for DU history, disability, employment and occupational status during meetings of the French SSc Patient Association (n = 86, 45.5%) or during hospitalization (n = 103, 54.5%)1. Among the 60 patients with at least one active DU at baseline (M0), 40 patients were followed longitudinally over 6 (3) months. These patients were evaluated for DU history, global and hand disability, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), daily activity limitation and employment status. Results. The median (IQR) age was 57.5 (43.5-68) years and the median (IQR) disease duration was 8.3 (3-16.5) years. Twenty-two (55%) patients had diffuse SSc and 34 (85%) were females. At baseline, a mean of 2.9 (2.8) DU per patient was reported. Thirty-three (82.5%) patients had ischaemic DU, 7 (17.5%) patients had >1 DU associated with calcinosis and 13 (32.5%) patients had mechanical DU. Thirteen (32.5%) patients had >4 DU at baseline. Among the 40 patients, 16 (40%) patients showed complete ulcer healing. In these patients with DU, the presence of calcinosis was associated with a lower probability of healing (P = 0.03). Comparison between healed and no-healed DU patients showed an improvement of hand disability provided by an improvement of the Cochin Hand Function score (P = 0.05)) and a trend towards HAQ domain dressing and grooming (P = 0.06) between M0 and M6 (3) visit in healed patients but not in no-healed patients. Concerning HRQoL, there were no difference for Mental and Physical component Scores of SF-36 but significant improvement of Bodily Pain score (P = 0.04) and Physical Role score (P = 0.05) between M0 and M6 (3) visit in patients with healed DU. The absence of healing was associated with significantly decreased work productivity (P = 0.05), whereas the performance in ADL was not significantly decreased (P = 0.15). Patients who were on sick-leave and who received some help for household tasks at the time of active DU were more likely to heal. Conclusion.     The concordance between the volume hotspot and the grade hotspot: a 3-D reconstructive model using the pathology outputs from the PROMIS trial.

    The rationale for directing targeted biopsy towards the centre of lesions has been questioned in light of prostate cancer grade heterogeneity. In this study, we assess the assumption that the maximum cancer Gleason grade (Gleason grade hotspot) lies within the maximum dimension (volume hotspot) of a prostate cancer lesion. 3-D histopathological models were reconstructed using the outputs of the 5-mm transperineal mapping (TPM) biopsies used as the reference test in the pilot phase of Prostate Mri Imaging Study (PROMIS), a paired validating cohort study investigating the performance of multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) against transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) biopsies. The prostate was fully sampled with 5 mm intervals; each core was separately labelled, inked and orientated in space to register 3-D cancer lesions location. The data from the histopathology results were used to create a 3-D interpolated reconstruction of each lesion and identify the spatial coordinates of the largest dimension (volume hot spot) and highest Gleason grade (Gleason grade hotspot) and assess their concordance. Ninety-four men, with median age 62 years (interquartile range, IQR= 58-68) and median PSA 6.5 ng ml(-1) (4.6-8.8), had a median of 80 (I69-89) cores each with a median of 4.5 positive cores (0-12). In the primary analysis, the prevalence of homogeneous lesions was 148 (76%; 95% confidence interval (CI) ±6.0%). In all, 184 (94±3.2%) lesions showed concordant hotspots and 11/47 (23±12.1%) of heterogeneous lesions showed discordant hotspots. The median 3-D distance between discordant hotspots was 12.8 mm (9.9-15.5). These figures remained stable on secondary analyses using alternative reconstructive assumptions. Limitations include a certain degree of error within reconstructed models. Guiding one biopsy needle to the maximum cancer diameter would lead to correct Gleason grade attribution in 94% of all lesions and 79% of heterogeneous ones if a true hit was obtained. Further correlation of histological lesions, their MRI appearance and the detectability of these hotspots on MRI will be undertaken once PROMIS results are released
