We consider the two dimensional parabolic-elliptic Patlak-Keller-Segel model of chemotactic aggregation for radially symmetric initial data. We show the existence of a stable mechanism of singularity formation and obtain a complete description of the associated aggregation process.Comment: 80 page

The History and Development of Religious Education in Ontario Schools

The present thesis is concerned with the history and development of religious education in Ontario schools, but it attempts to interpret the Ontario system for a readership which primarily knows the system and lives within the cultural and national context of the United States. A glossary is therefore included to explain certain terms which may be unfamiliar to the reader. A comparison of similarities and differences between the Ontario program for religious education and that prevalent in other jurisdictions is provided throughout the discussion. Chapter I presents an overview of the historical situation in Ontario concerning religious education and outlines the direction this thesis will take. Chapters II through VI discuss the development of the teaching of religious education in Ontario schools in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries while Chapters VII and VIII deal with the present situation in more detail. A brief concluding statement points out the direction of the future of religious education in Ontario and summarizes the findings of the thesis

Etude de l'existence et de la stabilité de dynamiques explosives pour des problèmes paraboliques critiques

Dans cette thèse a été obtenue une description fine de dynamiques explosives (Universalité de la bulle et de la vitesse de concentration, stabilité du régime explosif) pour trois problèmes paraboliques critiques : le flot de la chaleur harmonique en dimension deux pour des solutions 1-corotationnelles, l'équation de la chaleur semi-linéaire dans le cas énergie critique en dimension quatre, ainsi que le modèle de Patlak-Keller-Segel dans sa version parabolique-elliptique, pour des solutions de masse surcritique (M>8p). Les quatre premiers chapitres sont consacrés à la présentation de chacun de ses problèmes, ainsi que celle de la méthode de preuve. Dans les trois derniers chapitres ont été placés les articles dans leur version soumises à publication.In this thesis, we have obtained a sharp description of blow-up dynamics (Universality of the bubble and the speed of the concentration, stability of the formation of the singularity) for three critical parabolic problems : harmonic heat flow in dimension two for the 1-corotational solutions, the energy critical semilinear heat flow in dimension four and the Patlak-Keller-Segel model in the parabolic-elliptic version, for supercritical mass solutions (M>8p). Direct synthesis of mesoporous silica containing cobalt: A new strategy using a cobalt soap as a co-template

A novel approach to incorporate transition metals into porous structures is presented, which makes use of a cobalt soap in combination with the templating agent C16TMABr. An ordered mesoporous silica MCM-41 type material doped with Co is obtained after removal of the organic part by calcination. The a unit cell parameter of the cobalt containing mesoporous matrices is larger than that of pure MCM-41 and increases with the amount of cobalt present in the sample as well as the diameter of the pores. This is not observed when e.g. cobalt acetate is employed instead of the metal soap. The procedure presented establishes a new route for the incorporation of a transition metal into MCM-41 together with a tuning of the porous structure

Spatially resolved MaNGA observations of the host galaxy of superluminous supernova 2017egm

Superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) are found predominantly in dwarf galaxies, indicating that their progenitors have a low metallicity. However, the most nearby SLSN to date, SN 2017egm, occurred in the spiral galaxy NGC 3191, which has a relatively high stellar mass and correspondingly high metallicity. In this paper, we present detailed analysis of the nearby environment of SN 2017egm using MaNGA IFU data, which provides spectral data on kiloparsec scales. From the velocity map we find no evidence that SN 2017egm occurred within some intervening satellite galaxy, and at the SN position most metallicity diagnostics yield a solar and above solar metallicity (12 + log (O/H) = 8.8-9.1). Additionally we measure a small H-alpha equivalent width (EW) at the SN position of just 34 Angs, which is one of the lowest EWs measured at any SLSN or Gamma-Ray Burst position, and indicative of the progenitor star being comparatively old. We also compare the observed properties of NGC 3191 with other SLSN host galaxies. The solar-metallicity environment at the position of SN 2017egm presents a challenge to our theoretical understanding, and our spatially resolved spectral analysis provides further constraints on the progenitors of SLSNe.Comment: Accepted version in ApJ Letter.
