    On the theory of social innovations: Tarde's neglected contribution to the development of a sociological innovation theory

    The term 'social innovation' is currently becoming increasingly significant in social and political discourse. However, so far there is still no theoretically grounded, practicable concept of social innovation. Through recourse to the social theory of Gabriel Tarde, with its focus on social inventions and social practices of imitation, social innovation can be identified as a specific mechanism of change, and hence the analytical perspective can be directed towards society as a locus of innovation. This provides valuable input for an integrative theory of innovation, and for the analysis and shaping of social transformation processes

    Radiative corrections to the pressure and the one-loop polarization tensor of massless modes in SU(2) Yang-Mills thermodynamics

    We compute the one-loop polarization tensor Π\Pi for the on-shell, massless mode in a thermalized SU(2) Yang-Mills theory being in its deconfining phase. Postulating that SU(2)CMB=todayU(1)Y_{\tiny{CMB}}\stackrel{\tiny{today}}=U(1)_Y, we discuss Π\Pi's effect on the low-momentum part of the black-body spectrum at temperatures 2...4\sim 2... 4 TCMBT_{\tiny{CMB}} where TCMB2.73T_{\tiny{CMB}}\sim 2.73 K. A table-top experiment is proposed to test the above postulate. As an application, we point out a possible connection with the stability of dilute, cold, and old innergalactic atomic hydrogen clouds.     The Nitrogen Content in the Fruiting Body and Mycelium of Pleurotus Ostreatus and Its Utilization as a Medium Component in Thraustochytrid Fermentation

    Following the idea of a circular bioeconomy, the use of side streams as substitutes for cultivation media (components) in bioprocesses would mean an enormous economic and ecological advantage. Costly compounds in conventional media for the production of the triterpene squalene in thraustochytrids are the main carbon source and complex nitrogen sources. Among other side streams examined, extracts from the spent mycelium of the basidiomycete Pleurotus ostreatus were best-suited to acting as alternative nitrogen sources in cultivation media for thraustochytrids. The total nitrogen (3.76 ± 0.01 and 4.24 ± 0.04%, respectively) and protein (16.47 ± 0.06 and 18.57 ± 0.18%, respectively) contents of the fruiting body and mycelium were determined. The fungal cells were hydrolyzed and extracted to generate accessible nitrogen sources. Under preferred conditions, the extracts from the fruiting body and mycelium contained 73.63 ± 1.19 and 89.93 ± 7.54 mM of free amino groups, respectively. Cultivations of Schizochytrium sp. S31 on a medium using a mycelium extract as a complex nitrogen source showed decelerated growth but a similar squalene yield (123.79 ± 14.11 mg/L after 216 h) compared to a conventional medium (111.29 ± 19.96 mg/L, although improvable by additional complex nitrogen source)

    Petrology, geochemistry and tectono-magmatic affinity of gabbroic olistoliths from the ophiolite mélange in the NW Dinaric-Vardar ophiolite zone (Mts. Kalnik and Ivanščica, North Croatia)

    Mafic intrusive rocks are subordinately represented fragments of the oceanic crust in the ophiolite mélange exposedat Mts. Kalnik and Ivanščica located in the NW Dinaric-Vardar ophiolite zone. This ophiolite mélange occurs in thenorthern area of the Kalnik Unit and represents the SW surface boundary of the Zagorje-Mid-Transdanubian ShearZone. The mélange, except for mafic intrusive rocks, consists of a chaotic mixture of various extrusive rocks formedin different tectonic settings of the Repno Oceanic Domain (ROD). The ROD was the segment of Neo-Tethys thatconnects the Meliata-Maliak and Dinaric-Vardar oceanic systems. Previous study of mafic extrusive sequences suggestedan 80 Ma period of tectono-magmatic evolution of the ROD from intra-continental rifting during the Anisian,to the formation of proto-arc crust during the Callovian-Oxfordian. The domain exposes ophiolitic rocks in four mélangeareas. Isotropic gabbroic rocks that are abundant in two northern areas (Mts. Kalnik and Ivanščica), can be discriminatedinto three distinct geochemical groups: (A) N-MORB-type gabbro [(Th/Nb)n = 0.99–1.10; (Nb/La)n =0.95–0.99], (B) IAT-type amphibole gabbro with clear supra-subduction characteristics [(Th/Nb)n = 6.04–8.16; (Nb/La)n = 0.32–0.42] and (C) BABB-type amphibole-bearing gabbro [(Th/Nb)n = 2.88–4.02; (Nb/La)n = 0.58–0.69].Representative gabbro samples of each geochemical group were dated by the Ar-Ar and/or the K-Ar dating method.The Early Jurassic N-MORB-type gabbros (geochemical group A), ~185 Ma old, signifies a peculiar stage of Palaeo-Tethyan slab break-off. The Late Jurassic IAT-type gabbros (geochemical group B), ~147 Ma old, is the vestige of anascent intra-oceanic arc, whilst the Early Cretaceous BABB-type gabbros (geochemical group C), ~100 Ma old,provides evidence of magmatism in the back-arc marginal basin. The analyzed gabbroic rocks enable refinement andcompletion of the geodynamic evolution of the ROD, from the opening of an ensialic back-arc basin during the Ladinianand a continuous spreading event until the Bajocian. Intra-oceanic convergence was initiated in the Bathonian,with the formation of a nascent island-arc during the Tithonian, leading to formation of a Cretaceous ensimatic backarcmarginal basin. There are many lines of evidence that correlate the geodynamic evolution of the ROD with theAlbanide-Hellenide Neo-Tethyan oceanic segment.</p

    Application of the Redox‐Transmetalation Procedure to Access Divalent Lanthanide and Alkaline‐Earth NHC Complexes**

    Divalent lanthanide and alkaline-earth complexes supported by N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have been accessed by redox-transmetalation between air-stable NHC-AgI complexes and the corresponding metals. By using the small ligand 1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene (IMe), two series of isostructural complexes were obtained: the tetra-NHC complexes [LnI2(IMe)4] (Ln=Eu and Sm) and the bis-NHC complexes [MI2_{2}(IMe)2_{2}(THF)2_{2}] (M=Yb, Ca and Sr). In the former, distortions in the NHC coordination were found to originate from intermolecular repulsions in the solid state. Application of the redox-transmetalation strategy with the bulkier 1,3-dimesitylimidazol-2-ylidene (IMes) ligand yielded [SrI2_{2}(IMes)(THF)3_{3}], while using a similar procedure with Ca metal led to [CaI2_{2}(THF)4_{4}] and uncoordinated IMes. DFT calculations were performed to rationalise the selective formation of the bis-NHC adduct in [SrI2_{2}(IMe)2_{2}(THF)2_{2}] and the tetra-NHC adduct in [SmI2_{2}(IMe)4_{4}]. Since the results in the gas phase point towards preferential formation of the tetra-NHC complexes for both metal centres, the differences between both arrangements are a result of solid-state effects such as slightly different packing forces

    On the mechanical quality factors of cryogenic test masses from fused silica and crystalline quartz

    Current interferometric gravitational wave detectors (IGWDs) are operated at room temperature with test masses made from fused silica. Fused silica shows very low absorption at the laser wavelength of 1064 nm. It is also well suited to realize low thermal noise floors in the detector signal band since it offers low mechanical loss, i. e. high quality factors (Q factors) at room temperature. However, for a further reduction of thermal noise, cooling the test masses to cryogenic temperatures may prove an interesting technique. Here we compare the results of Q factor measurements at cryogenic temperatures of acoustic eigenmodes of test masses from fused silica and its crystalline counterpart. Our results show that the mechanical loss of fused silica increases with lower temperature and reaches a maximum at 30 K for frequencies of slightly above 10 kHz. The losses of crystalline quartz generally show lower values and even fall below the room temperature values of fused silica below 10 K. Our results show that in comparison to fused silica, crystalline quartz has a considerably narrower and lower dissipation peak on cooling and thus has more promise as a test mass material for IGDWs operated at cryogenic temperatures.     Simple, robust eddy correlation amplifier for aquatic dissolved oxygen and hydrogen sulfide flux measurements

    The aquatic application of the eddy correlation (EC) technique is growing more popular and is gradually becoming a standard method for resolving benthic O2 fluxes. By including the effects of the local hydrodynamics, the EC technique provides greater insight into the nature of benthic O2 exchange than traditional methods (i.e., benthic chambers and lander microprofilers). The growing popularity of the EC technique has led to a greater demand for easily accessible and robust EC instrumentation. Currently, the EC instrumentation is limited to two commercially available systems that are still in the development stage. Here, we present a robust, open source EC picoamplifier that is simple in design and can be easily adapted to both new and existing acoustic Doppler velocimeters (ADV). The picoamplifier has a response time of < 0.1 ms and features galvanic isolation that ensures very low noise contamination of the signal. It can be adjusted to accommodate varying ranges of microelectrode sensitivity as well as other types of amperometric microelectrodes. We show that the extracted flux values are not sensitive to reduced microelectrode operational ranges (i.e., lower resolution) and that no signal loss results from using either a 16- or 14-bit analog-to-digital converter. Finally, we demonstrate the capabilities of the picoamplifier with field studies measuring both dissolved O2 and H2S EC fluxes. The picoamplifier presented here consistently acquires high-quality EC data and provides a simple solution for those who wish to obtain EC instrumentation.     Towards a Harmonized Terminology: A Glossary for Biocide Susceptibility Testing

    Disinfection is a key strategy to reduce the burden of infections. The contact of bacteria to biocides—the active substances of disinfectants—has been linked to bacterial adaptation and the development of antimicrobial resistance. Currently, there is no scientific consensus on whether the excessive use of biocides contributes to the emergence and spread of multidrug resistant bacteria. The comprehensive analysis of available data remains a challenge because neither uniform test procedures nor standardized interpretive criteria nor harmonized terms are available to describe altered bacterial susceptibility to biocides. In our review, we investigated the variety of criteria and the diversity of terms applied to interpret findings in original studies performing biocide susceptibility testing (BST) of field isolates. An additional analysis of reviews summarizing the knowledge of individual studies on altered biocide susceptibility provided insights into currently available broader concepts for data interpretation. Both approaches pointed out the urgent need for standardization. We, therefore, propose that the well-established and approved concepts for interpretation of antimicrobial susceptibility testing data should serve as a role model to evaluate biocide resistance mechanisms on a single cell level. Furthermore, we emphasize the adaptations necessary to acknowledge the specific needs for the evaluation of BST data. Our approach might help to increase scientific awareness and acceptance
