Systematic study of carrier correlations in the electron-hole recombination dynamics of quantum dots

The ground state carrier dynamics in self-assembled (In,Ga)As/GaAs quantum dots has been studied using time-resolved photoluminescence and transmission. By varying the dot design with respect to confinement and doping, the dynamics is shown to follow in general a non-exponential decay. Only for specific conditions in regard to optical excitation and carrier population, for example, the decay can be well described by a mono-exponential form. For resonant excitation of the ground state transition a strong shortening of the luminescence decay time is observed as compared to the non-resonant case. The results are consistent with a microscopic theory that accounts for deviations from a simple two-level picture.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

An Abrupt Aging of Dissolved Organic Carbon in Large Arctic Rivers

Permafrost thaw in Arctic watersheds threatens to mobilize hitherto sequestered carbon. We examine the radiocarbon activity (F14C) of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the northern Mackenzie River basin. From 2003‐2017, DOC‐F14C signatures (1.00 ± 0.04; n = 39) tracked atmospheric 14CO2, indicating export of “modern” carbon. This trend was interrupted in June 2018 by the widespread release of aged DOC (0.85 ± 0.16, n = 28) measured across three separate catchment areas. Increased nitrate concentrations in June 2018 lead us to attribute this pulse of 14C‐depleted DOC to mobilization of previously frozen soil organic matter. We propose export through lateral perennial thaw zones occurred at the base of the active layer weakened by preceding warm summer and winter seasons. Although we are not yet able to ascertain the broader significance of this “anomalous” mobilization event, it highlights the potential for rapid and large‐scale release of aged carbon from permafrost

    An Unusual Digestive Foreign Body

    Get PDF
Foreign digestive bodies present unusual circumstances because they are associated with various degrees of local trauma and may lead to direct perforation or delayed local injury. Patients with foreign bodies should be evaluated upon admission for signs of impaction and perforation. While all objects impacted in the esophagus require urgent treatment, rectal foreign bodies are usually removable through the anus. The current case illustrates successful endoscopic retrieval of a proximally located foreign body in a particular legal situation where physicians had to work closely with police officers and court members

Selective kallikrein-kinin system activation in inbred rats differentially susceptible to granulomatous enterocolitis

AbstractBACKGROUND & AIMS: Crohn's disease is characterized by unrestrained inflammation with a genetic component. Genetic susceptibility and activation of the kalli-krein-kinin (contact) system were investigated in experimental enterocolitis and extraintestinal inflammation induced by bacterial polymers. METHODS: Kinetics of inflammation in inbred Lewis and Buffalo rats injected subserosally with peptidoglycan- polysaccharide polymers were correlated with in vivo and in vitro activation of the contact system. RESULTS: Lewis rats had a biphasic course of enterocolitis. Acute inflammation peaked 1 day after injection, gradually decreasing until day 14 when intestinal inflammation spontaneously reactivated and persisted for 16 weeks, accompanied by arthritis, granulomatous hepatitis, anemia, and leukocytosis. Self-limited acute enterocolitis in Buffalo rats resolved by 24 days without extraintestinal involvement. Consumption of the precursor proteins prekalli-krein and high-molecular-weight kininogen indicated activation of the plasma contact system in Lewis rats and closely correlated with chronic intestinal inflammation. Contact system activation did not occur in Buffalo rats, even during acute inflammation. In vitro studies showed a decreased rate of kininogen cleavage in Buffalo plasma. CONCLUSIONS: Selective in vivo and in vitro activation of the contact system in susceptible Lewis rats suggests that this pathway is one determinant of genetic susceptibility to granulomatous enterocolitis and systemic complications. Functional Group and Substructure Searching as a Tool in Metabolomics

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: A direct link between the names and structures of compounds and the functional groups contained within them is important, not only because biochemists frequently rely on literature that uses a free-text format to describe functional groups, but also because metabolic models depend upon the connections between enzymes and substrates being known and appropriately stored in databases. METHODOLOGY: We have developed a database named "Biochemical Substructure Search Catalogue" (BiSSCat), which contains 489 functional groups, >200,000 compounds and >1,000,000 different computationally constructed substructures, to allow identification of chemical compounds of biological interest. CONCLUSIONS: This database and its associated web-based search program (http://bisscat.org/) can be used to find compounds containing selected combinations of substructures and functional groups. It can be used to determine possible additional substrates for known enzymes and for putative enzymes found in genome projects. Its applications to enzyme inhibitor design are also discussed

Dbf2–Mob1 drives relocalization of protein phosphatase Cdc14 to the cytoplasm during exit from mitosis

Exit from mitosis is characterized by a precipitous decline in cyclin-dependent kinase (Cdk) activity, dissolution of mitotic structures, and cytokinesis. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, mitotic exit is driven by a protein phosphatase, Cdc14, which is in part responsible for counteracting Cdk activity. Throughout interphase, Cdc14 is sequestered in the nucleolus, but successful anaphase activates the mitotic exit network (MEN), which triggers dispersal of Cdc14 throughout the cell by a mechanism that has remained unknown. In this study, we show that a MEN component, protein kinase Dbf2–Mob1, promotes transfer of Cdc14 to the cytoplasm and consequent exit from mitosis by direct phosphorylation of Cdc14 on serine and threonine residues adjacent to a nuclear localization signal (NLS), thereby abrogating its NLS activity. Our results define a mechanism by which the MEN promotes exit from mitosis

    M2K: II. A Triple-Planet System Orbiting HIP 57274

Doppler observations from Keck Observatory have revealed a triple planet system orbiting the nearby mid-type K dwarf, HIP 57274. The inner planet, HIP 57274b, is a super-Earth with \msini\ = 11.6 \mearth (0.036 \mjup), an orbital period of 8.135 ±\pm 0.004 d, and slightly eccentric orbit e=0.19±0.1e=0.19 \pm 0.1. We calculate a transit probability of 6.5% for the inner planet. The second planet has \msini\ = 0.4 \mjup\ with an orbital period of 32.0 ±0.02\pm 0.02 d in a nearly circular orbit, and e=0.05±0.03e = 0.05 \pm 0.03. The third planet has \msini\ = 0.53 \mjup\ with an orbital period of 432 ±8\pm 8 d (1.18 years) and an eccentricity e=0.23±0.03e = 0.23 \pm 0.03. This discovery adds to the number of super Earth mass planets with \msini < 12 \mearth\ that have been detected with Doppler surveys. We find that 56 ±18\pm 18% super-Earths are members of multi-planet systems. This is certainly a lower limit because of observational detectability limits, yet significantly higher than the fraction of Jupiter mass exoplanets, 20±820 \pm 8%, that are members of Doppler-detected, multi-planet systems.Comment: 11 figures, submitte to ApJ on Sept 10, 201
