    Creating Opportunity for Immigrant Women and Girls in the Chicago Region: Recommendations for the Chicago Foundation for Women's Civic Plan

    Division sought to understand what economic, health, and violence-related issues are most pressing for immigrant women in the Chicago region, their families, and their communities. These findings are the result of a research and information gathering process with Chicago-area immigrant women, social service providers who work with immigrant communities, a literature review on related topics, and a scan of change efforts in other states and localities related to issues impacting immigrant women and their families. This report documents the key issues facing immigrant women in the Chicago region and prioritizes those concerns into actionable micro- and systems-level recommended change efforts. The Chicago Foundation for Women is building the concerns of immigrant women into their Civic Plan, and other community organizations and advocates can learn from the voices of impacted women themselves to ensure their efforts are aligned with the true needs and desires of the community

    A modeling study of the marine biogeochemistry, plankton dynamics, and carbon cycle on the continental shelf off the West Antarctic Peninsula

    Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Oceanography/Applied Ocean Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution June 2019.Over the past several decades, the West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) has undergone physical and ecological changes at a rapid pace, with warming surface ocean and a sharp decrease in the duration of the sea ice season. The impact of these changes in the ocean chemistry and ecosystem are not fully understood and have been investigated by the Palmer-LTER since 1991. Given the data acquisition constraints imposed by weather conditions in this region, an ocean circulation, sea ice and biogeochemistry model was implemented to help fill the gaps in the dataset. The results with the present best case from the suite of sensitivity experiments indicate that the model is able to represent the seasonal and interannual variations observed in the circulation, water mass distribution and sea ice observed in the WAP, and has identified gaps in the observations that could guide improvement of the simulation of the regional biogeochemistry. Comparison of model results with data from the Palmer-LTER project suggests that the large spatial and temporal variability observed in the phytoplankton bloom in the WAP is influenced by variability in the glacial sources of dissolved iron. Seasonal progression of the phytoplankton bloom is well represented in the model, and values of vertically integrated net primary production (NPP) are largely consistent with observations. Although a bias towards lower surface dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and alkalinity was identified in the model results, interannual variability was similar to the observed in the Palmer-LTER cruise data

    First 'Rauisuchian' archosaur (Pseudosuchia, Loricata) for theMiddle Triassic Santacruzodon Assemblage Zone (SantaMaria Supersequence), Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil

    The ‘Rauisuchia’ are a group of Triassic pseudosuchian archosaurs that displayed a near worldwide distribution. In Brazil, their fossils are found only in the Santa Maria Formation (Paraná Basin) of the Rio Grande do Sul State, specifically in the Middle Triassic Dinodontosaurus assemblage zone (AZ) and the Late Triassic Hyperodapedon AZ (Rauisuchus tiradentes). Between these two cenozones is the Santacruzodon AZ (Middle Triassic), whose record was, until now, restricted to non-mammalian cynodonts and the proterochampsian Chanaresuchus bonapartei. Here we present the first occurrence of a rauisuchian archosaur for this cenozone, from the Schoenstatt outcrop, located near the city of Santa Cruz do Sul and propose a new species, based on biostratigraphical evidence and a comparative osteological analysis

    “Vou para casa. E agora?” A difícil arte do Método Canguru no domicílio

    Objective: to get to know the parents' experience in applying the Kangaroo Mother Care at home. Method: qualitative research with data obtained between March and December 2016, by means of interviews with 12 mothers and three fathers of preterm and/or low-birth-weight newborns, participants in the third stage of the Kangaroo Method. The interviews were submitted to thematic content analysis technique. Results: the parents maintained the kangaroo position at home. Although each family developed it differently, they have not failed to implement it. They were also able to adapt to the new care routine with the arrival of the child at home and reported satisfaction with the medical appointments of the third stage and the follow-up carried out at the hospital. Conclusion: the parents, despite the daily challenges with home care, have a clear meaning about the importance of the Kangaroo Position for preterm and / or low-birth-weight newborns and its ability to affect the quality of care offered.Objetivo: conhecer a experiência dos pais na aplicação do Método Canguru no domicílio. Método: pesquisa qualitativa cujos dados foram obtidos entre março e dezembro de 2016, por meio de entrevistas com 12 mães e três pais de recém-nascidos pré-termos e/ou baixo peso, participantes da terceira etapa do Método Canguru, que foram submetidas à técnica de análise de conteúdo temática. Resultados: os pais mantiveram a posição canguru no domicílio. Apesar de cada família desenvolvê-la de forma diferente, não deixaram de realizá-la. Também conseguiram adaptar-se à nova rotina de cuidados com a chegada do filho em casa e relataram satisfação com as consultas da terceira etapa e de seguimento realizadas no hospital. Conclusão: os pais, mesmo diante dos desafios diários com os cuidados no domicílio, detêm uma significação clara sobre a importância da Posição Canguru para os recém-nascidos pré-termos e/ou baixo peso e sua capacidade de impactar na qualidade do cuidado oferecido

    Diversification history in the Dendrocincla fuliginosa complex (Aves: Dendrocolaptidae): insights from broad geographic sampling

    Dendrocincla woodcreepers are ant-following birds widespread throughout tropical America. Species in the genus are widely distributed and show little phenotypic variation. Notwithstanding, several subspecies have been described, but the validity of some of these taxa and the boundaries among them have been discussed for decades. Recent genetic evidence based on limited sampling has pointed to the paraphyly of D. fuliginosa, showing that its subspecies constitute a complex that also includes D. anabatina and D. turdina. In this study we sequenced nuclear and mitochondrial markers for over two hundred individuals belonging to the D. fuliginosa complex to recover phylogenetic relationships, describe intraspecific genetic diversity and provide historical biogeographic scenarios of diversification. Our results corroborate the paraphyly of D. fuliginosa, with D. turdina and D. anabatina nested within its recognized subspecies. Recovered genetic lineages roughly match the distributions of described subspecies and congruence among phylogenetic structure, phenotypic diagnosis and distribution limits were used to discuss current systematics and taxonomy within the complex, with special attention to Northern South America. Our data suggest the origin of the complex in western Amazonia, associated with the establishment of upland forests in the area during the early Pliocene. Paleoclimatic cycles and river rearrangements during the Pleistocene could have, at different times, both facilitated dispersal across large Amazonian rivers and the Andes and isolated populations, likely playing an important role in differentiation of extant species. Previously described hybridization in the headwaters of the Tapajós river represents a secondary contact of non-sister lineages that cannot be used to test the role of the river as primary source of diversification. Based on comparisons of D. fuliginosa with closely related understory upland forest taxa, we suggest that differential habitat use could influence diversification processes in a historically changing landscape, and should be considered for proposing general mechanisms of diversification.Peer reviewe
