QT interval shortening after bariatric surgery depends on the applied heart rate correction equation

Get PDF
A shortening of electrocardiographic QT interval has been observed in obese subjects after weight loss, but previous results may have been biased by inappropriate heart rate (HR) correction. Methods Electrocardiography (ECG) recordings of 49 (35 females) severely obese patients before and 12 months after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery were analysed. QT interval (QTc) was calculated by using four different equations, i.e. Bazett, Fridericia, Framingham and Hodges. Results Irrespectively of the used correction formula, QTc interval length was reduced after the surgery (QTcBazett −31 ± 18 ms; QTcFridericia −12 ± 15 ms; QTcFramingham −14 ± 15 ms; QTcHodges −9 ± 15 ms; all Ps Bazett reduction was significantly greater than the reduction in QTc calculated upon the other three equations (all Ps Bazett (P Fridericia, QTcFramingham and QTcHodges (all Ps > 0.05) were significantly correlated with concurrent changes in HR. Multivariate regression analyses revealed a significant independent association of serum insulin levels with QTcFridericia, QTcFramingham and QTcHodges values (all Ps < 0.05) preoperatively, whilst changes in QTc interval length after the surgery were not consistently associated to concurrent changes in metabolic traits. Conclusions Our data show that the extent of weight loss-associated QTc interval shortening largely depends on the applied HR correction equation and appears to be overestimated when the most popular Bazett’s equation is used

System Tests of the ATLAS Pixel Detector

The innermost part of the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) experiment at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) will be a pixel detector, which is presently under construction. Once installed into the experimental area, access will be extremely limited. To ensure that the integrated detector assembly operates as expected, a fraction of the detector which includes the power supplies and monitoring system, the optical readout, and the pixel modules themselves, has been assembled and operated in a laboratory setting for what we refer to as system tests. Results from these tests are presented.Comment: 5 Pages, 9 Figures, to appear in Proceedings of the Eleventh Workshop on Electronics for LHC and Future Experiment

Longitudinal genome-wide methylation study of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass patients reveals novel CpG sites associated with essential hypertension

Background: Essential hypertension is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Emerging research suggests a role of DNA methylation in blood pressure physiology. We aimed to investigate epigenetic associations of promoter related CpG sites to essential hypertension in a genome-wide methylation approach. Methods: The genome-wide methylation pattern in whole blood was measured in 11 obese patients before and six months after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery using the Illumina 450 k beadchip. CpG sites located within 1500 bp of the transcriptional start site of adjacent genes were included in our study, resulting in 124 199 probes investigated in the subsequent analysis. Percent changes in methylation states and SBP measured before and six months after surgery were calculated. These parameters were correlated to each other using the Spearman's rank correlation method (Edgeworth series approximation). To further investigate the detected relationship between candidate CpG sites and systolic blood pressure levels, binary logistic regression analyses were performed in a larger and independent cohort of 539 individuals aged 19-101 years to elucidate a relationship between EH and the methylation state in candidate CpG sites. Results: We identified 24 promoter associated CpG sites that correlated with change in SBP after RYGB surgery (p < 10-16). Two of these CpG loci (cg00875989, cg09134341) were significantly hypomethylated in dependency of EH (p < 10-03). These results were independent of age, BMI, ethnicity and sex. Conclusions: The identification of these novel CpG sites may contribute to a further understanding of the epigenetic regulatory mechanisms underlying the development of essential hypertension

Longitudinal borehole functionality in 15 rural Ghanaian towns from three groundwater quality clusters

OBJECTIVE: In sub-Saharan Africa, 45% of the rural population uses boreholes (BHs). Despite recent gains in improved water access and coverage, parallel use of unimproved sources persists. Periodic infrastructure disrepair contributes to non-exclusive use of BHs. Our study describes functionality of BHs in 2014, 2015, and 2016 in 15 rural towns in the Eastern Region of Ghana sourced from three groundwater quality clusters (high iron, high salinity, and control). We also assess factors affecting cross-sectional and longitudinal functionality using logistic regression. RESULTS: BH functionality rates ranged between 81 and 87% and were similar across groundwater quality clusters. Of 51 BHs assessed in all three years, 34 (67%) were consistently functional and only 3 (6%) were consistently broken. There was a shift toward proactive payment for water over the course of the study in the control and high-salinity clusters. Payment mechanism, population served, presence of nearby alternative water sources, and groundwater quality cluster were not significant predictors of cross-sectional or longitudinal BH functionality. However, even in the high iron cluster, where water quality is poor and no structured payment mechanism for water exists, BHs are maintained, showing that they are important community resources

Sonoluminescing air bubbles rectify argon

Get PDF
The dynamics of single bubble sonoluminescence (SBSL) strongly depends on the percentage of inert gas within the bubble. We propose a theory for this dependence, based on a combination of principles from sonochemistry and hydrodynamic stability. The nitrogen and oxygen dissociation and subsequent reaction to water soluble gases implies that strongly forced air bubbles eventually consist of pure argon. Thus it is the partial argon (or any other inert gas) pressure which is relevant for stability. The theory provides quantitative explanations for many aspects of SBSL.Comment: 4 page

Decomposition of 1,1-Dichloroethane and 1,1-Dichloroethene in an electron beam generated plasma reactor

Get PDF
An electron beam generated plasma reactor is used to decompose low concentrations (100–3000 ppm) of 1,1-dichloroethane and 1,1-dichloroethene in atmospheric pressure air streams. The energy requirements for 90% and 99% decomposition of each compound are reported as a function of inlet concentration. Dichloroethene decomposition is enhanced by a chlorine radical propagated chain reaction. The chain length of the dichloroethene reaction is estimated to increase with dichloroethene concentration from 10 at 100 ppm initial dichloroethene concentration to 30 at 3000 ppm. Both the dichloroethane and dichloroethene reactions seem to be inhibited by electron scavenging decomposition products. A simple analytic expression is proposed for fitting decomposition data where inhibition effects are important and simple first order kinetics are not observed

The innermost part of the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) experiment will be a pixel detector, built of 1744 individual detector modules. To operate the modules, readout electronics, and other detector components, a complex power supply and control system is necessary. The specific powering and control requirements are described, along with the custom made components of our power supply and control systems. These include remotely programmable Regulator Stations, the power supply system for the optical transceivers, several monitoring units and the Interlock System
