    Effects of the bias enhanced nucleation hot-filament chemical-vapor deposition parameters on diamond nucleation on iridium

    The effects of the bias current density and the filament-to-substrate distance on the nucleation of diamond on iridium buffer layers were investigated in a hot-filament chemical-vapor deposition (HFCVD) reactor. The nucleation density increased by several orders of magnitude with the raise of the bias current density. According to high-resolution field-emission gun scanning electron microscopy observation, diamond nuclei formed during bias-enhanced nucleation (BEN) did not show any preferred oriented growth. Moreover, the first-nearest-neighbor distance distribution was consistent with a random nucleation mechanism. This occurrence suggested that the diffusion of carbon species at the substrate surface was not the predominant mechanism taking place during BEN in the HFCVD process. This fact was attributed to the formation of a graphitic layer prior to diamond nucleation. We also observed that the reduction of the filament sample distance during BEN was helpful for diamond growth. This nucleation behavior was different from the one previously reported in the case of BEN-microwave chemical-vapor deposition experiments on iridium and has been tentatively explained by taking into account the specific properties and limitations of the HFCVD technique

    Intramolecular bonds resolved on a semiconductor surface

    Noncontact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM) is now routinely capable of obtaining submolecular resolution, readily resolving the carbon backbone structure of planar organic molecules adsorbed on metal substrates. Here we show that the same resolution may also be obtained for molecules adsorbed on a reactive semiconducting substrate. Surprisingly, this resolution is routinely obtained without the need for deliberate tip functionalization. Intriguingly, we observe two chemically distinct apex types capable of submolecular imaging. We characterize our tip apices by “inverse imaging” of the silicon adatoms of the Si(111)−7×7 surface and support our findings with detailed density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We also show that intramolecular resolution on individual molecules may be readily obtained at 78 K, rather than solely at 5 K as previously demonstrated. Our results suggest a wide range of tips may be capable of producing intramolecular contrast for molecules adsorbed on semiconductor surfaces, leading to a much broader applicability for submolecular imaging protocols

    Offspring sex ratio and gonadal irradiation in the British Childhood Cancer Survivor Study

    We investigated offspring sex ratio among 6232 offspring born to 3218 survivors of childhood cancer in relation to therapeutic irradiation, and pooled our data with those from two other large-scale studies giving a total of 9685 offspring. Exposure to high-dose gonadal irradiation was not associated with a significant alteration in offspring sex ratio compared to low doses (men: P=0.58, women: P=0.66). There was also no evidence that the ratio varied with time since cancer diagnosis when comparing survivors treated with radiotherapy vs those without (men: P=0.51; women: P=0.46). This, the largest study to date, finds no evidence that exposure to radiation affects the offspring sex ratio among survivors of childhood cancer

    A family set method for estimating heredity and stress--I : A pilot survey of blood pressure among Negroes in high and low stress areas, Detroit, 1966-1967

    A pilot survey designed to test the feasibility of measuring genetic and stress variables as they relate to blood pressure levels was carried out among Negroes residing in high and low stress census tracts in Detroit, 1966-1967. Fifty-six "family sets" or 280 persons were interviewed and blood pressure recordings were taken by trained nurses. Each family set was composed of an index, a spouse, a sibling and a first cousin of index, and an unrelated person in the census tract matched to index. The method and findings of obtaining such family sets is discussed and found to be encouraging enough to initiate a larger study. It was also found that proportions of persons with hypertensive levels were significantly greater in the high stress tract (32 per cent; N = 102) than in the low stress tract (19 per cent; N = 113).Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/32720/1/0000088.pd

    Environmental lithium exposure in the north of Chile - Tissue exposure indices

    Background: northern Chile has the highest levels of lithium in surface waters in the world which is reflected in very high lithium levels in the plants and animals that depend on these water systems and consequently in the indigenous population. Methods: the lithium tissue burdens in populations from two valleys in the extreme north of Chile have been studied. The bulk of this report is based on analyses of lithium levels in urine, hair, and breast milk in the population of several villages. Data on serum levels, some of which had been previously published, are included for the sake of completeness. Since this paper reports studies by several groups of workers samples were analysed by a variety of methods. These include atomic emission, atomic absorption, other photospectroscopic techniques and mass spectroscopy. Results: in all samples studied the average lithium level (5.3 ppm) was found to be significantly elevated compared to levels reported in the literature and measured in this study for people not exposed to high levels in water and food (0.009-0.228 ppm). Conclusions: the people studied represent a unique longitudinal cohort. The work should provide important insights into the potential neuroprotective effects of lithium also help us set guidelines to assess the risks from high dose environmental exposure

    Interoception and Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia in Gambling Disorder

The final version is available from Wiley via the DOI in this recordGambling has long-standing links with excitement and physiological arousal, but prior research has not considered i) gamblers’ ability to detect internal physiological signals, or ii) markers of parasympathetic functioning. The present study measured interoception in individuals with gambling disorder, using selfreport measures and a heart beat counting task administered at rest. Resting state Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia (RSA), an index of heart rate variability, was measured as a proxy for parasympathetic control and emotional regulation capacity. In a case-control design, 50 individuals with gambling disorder were compared against 35 controls without gambling problems. Participants completed two self-report measures of bodily awareness and a behavioural test of heart beat counting. A resting state electrocardiogram (five minutes) was used to calculate RSA. There were no significant differences on the self-report or behavioral interoception probes. The group with gambling disorder displayed significantly reduced RSA, which at face value is consistent with reduced parasympathetic control. However, the group difference in RSA did not survive controlling for age and smoking status, as established predictors of heart rate variability. Our findings do not support any changes in interoceptive processing in people with gambling disorder, at least under resting conditions.
